    Welcoming staff, but major problems

I appreciated the warm, attentive staff, friendly neighbors, weekly activities and scenic views - my mother felt welcomed and cared for. But persistent pests/roaches, frequent elevator failures, water leaks/outages and unreliable internet, confusing layout/limited parking and spotty communication from management made living here difficult despite caring staff and occasional timely repairs.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the review summaries is mixed, with strong praise for the people and community atmosphere but significant and recurring concerns about building maintenance, pest control, and reliable services. Multiple reviewers emphasize positive first impressions—apartments described as spotless or renovated "like a doll house," clean shared spaces, scenic views, and a warm environment that makes visitors and new residents feel welcome. The community offers weekly activities, and several reviewers explicitly note attentive, kind staff and neighbors who create a friendly, social environment. Some accounts also indicate helpful management and staff availability seven days a week, as well as timely repairs for certain issues.

Care quality and staff performance are a prominent theme but are described inconsistently. Many reviews praise staff as attentive, informative about care, hardworking, and welcoming to residents and families. These reviewers highlight kindness, gratitude toward staff, and a sense that staff care for residents' needs, including 24-hour care availability. However, other reviewers report alarming counterexamples: descriptions of staff as "horrific," uncaring, or unresponsive with poor communication and lack of callbacks. This split suggests variability by shift, team, or time period and points to an inconsistent resident experience in staff responsiveness and communication.

Facility condition and maintenance are another major area of contrast. On the positive side, some residents experienced prompt repairs and clean environments. On the negative side, there are repeated and serious reports of pest problems—roaches, bugs in kitchens, bugs falling from ceilings, and even disposal of appliances because of infestation. Reviewers mention that pest-control measures were attempted but appear inadequate or inconsistent. In addition to pests, reviewers report infrastructure problems: frequent elevator malfunctions, water leaks and unannounced water outages, unreliable internet, and generally outdated areas of the facility. These issues impact daily living and safety perceptions and are raised multiple times across the summaries.

Cleanliness and hygiene concerns interlink with pest reports. While a few reviewers state the facility was spotless at move-in, others express explicit concerns about ongoing cleanliness and pest presence in kitchens and common areas. The fact that pests reportedly caused appliance disposal indicates severity in at least some instances. Although pest control efforts are noted, the persistence of sightings and damage suggests the need for more decisive, regular, or comprehensive remediation.

Community life, activities, and logistics receive generally positive commentary but with caveats. Weekly activities, friendly visitors, and welcoming neighbors create a supportive social environment for many residents and their families. At the same time, practical issues detract from convenience: confusing building layout with few posted maps, limited parking, and unreliable services (internet, water) lead to frustration. Elevator reliability is a particular operational concern because it affects mobility, safety, and accessibility for residents.

Management perception is mixed: some reviewers explicitly call out "wonderful management," while others point to poor communication and unresponsiveness when problems arise. This divergence suggests management may be effective in some areas (e.g., community-building, certain repairs) but not consistently addressing recurring systemic problems like pests, utilities, and elevator maintenance. Taken together, the reviews paint a picture of a community with strong social assets and caring staff in many cases, but also with several recurring operational and maintenance issues that materially affect resident satisfaction. Prospective residents and families should weigh the strong community and staff attributes against documented concerns—especially pest control, reliability of elevators and utilities, and inconsistent communication—and consider asking management about recent corrective actions, pest-control plans, and measures to improve service reliability before deciding.

    About Scott Hill Retirement Community

Scott Hill Retirement Community sits in the Alleghany Highlands in Clifton Forge, Virginia, and has its roots in a former hospital built by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company, which makes for a bit of history around the grounds, and these days it's managed by Coordinated Services Management, Inc., so you'll see things run steady and simple. Folks aged 62 and up or anyone with physical disabilities can find apartments here, with both one- and two-bedroom layouts-all with big windows that let in plenty of sun, full kitchens, and private bathrooms, some built especially for easy access if you get around in a wheelchair or have trouble with stairs, and there's an elevator for every floor, so mobility's not a worry. The apartments come with affordable rent that's tied to income to help keep living costs in check, and you don't pay extra for maintenance or for things like trash-there are laundry rooms and trash chutes on each floor, too, which sure makes chores a little easier.

Comfort gets a helping hand with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and on-site maintenance ready around the clock for repairs or emergencies, and they offer an emergency response system for peace of mind, so if you need help day or night, someone's there. The place has its own dining room where a Dining Services Manager handles an evening meal daily, and meals can meet special diets if needed-plus, if you prefer cooking for yourself, you've got the option for that since all apartments have kitchens. There's a beauty parlor and barber shop right in the building, and you'll find lounges, a recreation room with a pool table, and a community kitchen for group events, along with outdoor spaces like garden walkways, a gazebo, and a nicely landscaped courtyard. Residents can join community-sponsored activities or relax in sun porches, and folks who like to stay busy can take part in gardening, walking outside, or just chatting with neighbors in the comfortable common areas. There's even a policy where small pets are welcome, which is a nice touch for those who don't want to live without their animal companions.

Scott Hill offers scheduled and accessible minibus transportation Monday through Friday, so getting to town, appointments, or outings is easier, with service coordinators available during the week to help connect you with extra help or services if you need it. The staff doesn't provide medical care, assisted living, or nursing home services, so this place fits best for independent seniors or those with physical disabilities who can handle living on their own but want some help with meals, maintenance, and daily safety. The place keeps a fair housing policy, meaning they don't turn folks away for race, religion, , gender, disability, source of funds, or military service-they're clear on fairness.

For those looking to stay active, there's plenty to do with a big recreation room, sun porches, community rooms, and open-air walkways and gardens to enjoy the mountain air. Residents have access to a large directory of over 26,000 local, state, and national services and programs, and the community links with resources like VirginiaNavigator, SeniorNavigator, and VeteransNavigator for help with things like employment, benefits, social activities, caregiving, financial planning, and transportation. Scott Hill Retirement Community also hosts a library of articles, books, guides, and videos about issues important to seniors, and you'll find regular updates about local events. Folks can choose between a few different independent living apartment styles, each easy to keep up, thanks to the maintenance-free design, and the place aims to offer affordable, comfortable housing for older adults in a quiet, scenic setting.
