    Friendly staff, clean facility, affordable

I moved my mom here and feel at ease - the staff are exceptionally friendly, caring and attentive, and the facility is clean and beautifully decorated. Meals are healthy, delicious and accommodate diets, and there are lots of engaging activities, exercise options and pleasant common areas (porch, patio, library, bar) that keep residents active. Apartments are comfortable with several room options and recent remodels, though a few rooms are small and there are some small steps/hallways to watch for. Month-to-month pricing with no large entrance fee made it affordable, and it has given our out-of-town family real peace of mind.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive, with frequent and consistent praise for the staff, cleanliness, amenities, and social programming at Commonwealth Senior Living at Stratford House. The most prominent theme is the quality of staff: reviewers repeatedly describe employees as friendly, caring, personable, and attentive. Multiple comments emphasize that staff provide family-like care, make new residents feel welcome, and contribute significantly to families’ peace of mind — particularly for relatives who live out of town. Staff competence and helpfulness are reinforced by reports of good leadership and a pleasant director who engages with residents and visitors.

Facility upkeep and environment receive high marks. Reviewers note that the building and grounds are clean, well kept, and attractively decorated. Common areas — including porches, patios, a library, lounge with pool table, and outdoor resting spaces — are highlighted as pleasant gathering spots. Several accounts mention no unpleasant odors and beautiful landscaping. Amenities are comprehensive: there are elevators, weights/exercise areas (including an exercise space on each floor), a bar, and a range of social spaces. Ongoing remodeling and availability of brand-new rooms were mentioned positively by some reviewers, indicating active investment in facility improvements.

Dining and health-related services are also strengths. Many reviewers praise the meals as healthy and delicious, and several indicate that dietary accommodations are handled well. Physical therapy offerings (noted as occurring multiple times per week by at least one reviewer) and other wellness resources reinforce a supportive health environment. Residents and families frequently say they "loved the food" and that the dining experience was a contributing factor to satisfaction.

Social life and activities are repeatedly cited as robust, with a published calendar of events, speaker programs, refreshments, and a variety of activities that keep residents engaged. Even when activities were limited by COVID-19, reviewers observed that the activity team was active and that programming is a notable strength. The independent living section appears to support resident autonomy — people can go out, keep their cars, and remain active — which several reviewers appreciated.

Cost and contract terms come up as favorable selling points: many reviewers highlight the absence of a large entrance fee and the availability of month-to-month pricing, which reduces upfront financial burden and increases flexibility. Several reviewers explicitly state the community was affordable and within their budget, and multiple family members say the arrangement provides peace of mind.

There are some recurring and occasional concerns to note. COVID-19 had an impact: visitation restrictions and quarantines were reported, and some activities were temporarily limited as a result. A few reviewers mentioned operational hiccups (for example, a promised lunch that was not delivered), which suggests isolated service lapses. Unit size appears to vary — while several reviews praise spacious rooms, at least one reviewer found certain apartments small and less appealing than alternatives. Safety and layout issues were raised by a small number of reviewers who noted long hallways and small steps up/down that could present fall risks for some residents. Ongoing remodeling was generally viewed positively (new rooms) but may cause temporary disruption during visits or move-ins.

In summary, the dominant pattern is high satisfaction: Stratford House is consistently praised for its compassionate staff, clean and attractive environment, varied social programming, supportive amenities (including therapy and exercise opportunities), and family-friendly financial terms. Most reviewers strongly recommend the community and report that it substantially eased caregivers’ concerns. Prospective residents and families should feel encouraged by the overall positive feedback but may want to tour specific apartment units to confirm size/layout, ask about current remodeling schedules, and inquire about current COVID-related policies or any temporary service adjustments before finalizing a decision.

Commonwealth Senior Living at Stratford House is a senior living community located in Danville's Historic District, right across from Danville Regional Medical Center, that offers independent living, assisted living, memory care, and respite care, so folks can get the right care for their needs as they change over time, and the Sweet Memories™ program helps residents with Alzheimer's and dementia feel safe and as comfortable as possible. The building stands out with its grand columns, a striking cupola, and flags, and inside you'll find living rooms with soft lighting, fireplaces, bookshelves, and big windows that bring in plenty of natural light, along with a dining room with elegant tables, fresh flowers, and chandeliers, where meals are served restaurant-style with attention to dietary needs, and there's a farm-to-table dining program that uses fresh, local ingredients, which is nice when people care about the food they eat. The staff at Stratford House takes care of maintenance, housekeeping, cooking, and laundry, and licensed nurses are on call 24/7, with emergency response systems throughout, so people can feel secure round the clock, and support is always close by for medication, bathing, dressing, and other daily activities. The apartments come in many different floor plans, including studios, one-bedrooms, and two-bedrooms, some furnished and some not, all with private bathrooms, and some that let people bring their small pets, cats or dogs under 25 pounds, if that makes them feel more at home, and there are also private and companion suites. Residents can use cable or satellite TV, Wi-Fi, and each unit has an emergency call system, and the community covers all utilities except phone and cable TV. For fun and connection, the activity team has daily programs, trips, and events, there's an in-house movie theater, a library, a Sweet Memories Neighborhood for memory care residents, and the SingFit program uses music to lift spirits and help people connect. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with walking paths, a calm pond with a footbridge, and spaces to sit outside or enjoy the garden, plus there's a beauty salon, barber shop, exercise room, and pet-friendly areas, and the inside common areas offer soft seating, built-in bookshelves, a fireplace, and a big TV, so there's always a spot for socializing or relaxing. Stratford House provides transportation for errands and events, and has a resource directory with links and guides on topics like caregiving, veterans benefits, health, and housing; the staff helps connect folks with these resources through VirginiaNavigator and other related programs. Weekly housekeeping and linen services, as well as utilities, are managed by the staff to keep things simple for everyone, and the building was designed to make both everyday living and transitions between care levels as smooth as possible to avoid disruptions and worries for both residents and their families. The community allows for both active living and increased support, depending on what someone needs, with friendly staff who get to know the residents and a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere that lets people find their own pace and way to spend the day, whether alone or in good company.
