    Caring staff, expensive, poor care

I appreciated the clean, almost 5-star hotel vibe and the compassionate staff who treated my mother like family, but overall I'm dissatisfied. It's very expensive with yearly increases and hidden fees (meds, cable, salon), poor communication with my Healthcare POA, and understaffed/poorly supervised caregivers; meals were often cold and memory-care needs weren't met. Medical staff were generally good, but we had medication overcharges/scams (Partners Pharmacy) and a double-dose error - I can't recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Carrington Place at Wytheville is mixed: several reviewers strongly praise caregivers and medical staff and describe the physical environment as clean, well maintained, and upscale, while a number of other reviewers report significant operational and care concerns. Positive comments often focus on compassionate, family-like care, short-stay experiences that went well, and a newer, hotel‑like facility. Negative comments repeatedly point to dining problems, staffing and supervision shortfalls, medication and billing problems, and communication/administrative issues.

Care quality and staffing: Multiple reviewers specifically call out medical and caregiving staff as compassionate and capable—phrases like "made me feel like family" and "medical staff very good" appear in the summaries. At the same time, a recurring and serious theme is understaffing and poor supervision. Reviews note falls, lack of assistance, and at least one reported medication error (a double dose of a sleeping medication). There are also concerns that dementia or memory care needs were not provided for or properly acknowledged/credited, and that the level of expected independence did not match some residents' actual needs. In short, while clinical staff and some caregivers receive high marks from several families, other accounts describe safety and supervision lapses significant enough to undermine confidence for residents with higher assistance needs.

Facilities and atmosphere: The physical plant earns consistent praise. Multiple reviewers describe the building as clean, well maintained, relatively new, and even "5‑star hotel" in feel. Reviewers credit the facility with improving residents' condition in at least one case. These positive impressions about the environment contrast sharply with complaints about service elements (food temperature, availability of assistance) and administrative practices.

Dining, amenities, and billing: Dining experience is a clear pain point — cold food and generally negative dining experiences are mentioned by several reviewers. Amenities and associated charges are another recurring complaint: reviewers list hidden or unexpected fees such as cable charges (including complaints that no TV was provided), hair salon fees, and extra medication or pharmacy charges. One reviewer described a "pharmacy scam" involving Partners Pharmacy and others report being charged more than expected for medications. There are also comments about yearly price increases and a general sense that the community is "very expensive," with some families feeling overcharged for services.

Management and communication: Administrative and business-office communication is criticized multiple times. Reviewers describe the business office as unhelpful and report poor communication with the healthcare power of attorney (POA). These issues compound concerns about billing transparency and resolve — hidden fees, overcharges, and unclear explanations about services and responsibilities were flagged repeatedly.

Patterns and takeaways: The reviews indicate a split experience. For families seeking a clean, upscale environment with compassionate clinical staff and who need limited ongoing support, Carrington Place at Wytheville can deliver a positive experience (especially noted in short stays). However, for residents with more intensive care needs—memory impairment, mobility issues, or medication management requirements—the pattern of understaffing, supervision lapses, medication errors, and poor administrative transparency raises meaningful concerns. Recurring themes that merit attention before committing include verifying the availability and billing of memory care services, asking detailed questions about staffing levels and supervision, clarifying all fees (including cable, salon, and pharmacy/billing practices), and confirming medication administration and pharmacy arrangements. Overall, expectations should be aligned carefully with the facility’s actual service model, and families should obtain clear, written answers on the specific issues highlighted by multiple reviewers.
