    Once great community, now overpriced

I moved my mom into this centrally located 55+ independent-living community - private apartment with a kitchen, gym, theater, salon, library and lobby café - and at first it felt like excellent value for a two-bedroom with caring staff and lots of activities. Lately many activities, classes (yoga/Zumba), parties and the gym are gone, transportation isn't offered (Ubers are expensive), rent keeps rising, and small repairs (her microwave) went unfixed for months. It's a beautiful facility with kind staff, but it's become pricey and honestly depressing.

    Summary review

The reviews present a mixed but clearly divergent picture of Hearthside Johns Creek, with strong positive notes about the community's amenities, location and staff contrasted by serious negative reports about a decline in activities, services, and responsiveness. One set of comments emphasizes the classic independent-living strengths: a central, convenient location for family visits, private apartments with kitchens in a 55+ community, and a range of on-site amenities such as a gym, theater room, hair salon, library and lobby cafe. Multiple reviewers praise the staff and management as caring and appealing, and at least one reviewer explicitly calls the facility "excellent" and finds a two-bedroom unit to be good value. These positives indicate that when the facility is operating fully, it can provide a robust independent-living lifestyle with social, recreational, and practical conveniences in place.

However, a contrasting set of reviews raises significant concerns about recent or ongoing changes. Several comments state that the community has shifted from an active independent-living atmosphere toward one that "resembles a nursing home," driven largely by the reported cessation or dramatic reduction of activities. Specific group programming mentioned as missing includes parties, yoga, Zumba and other organized events. Reviewers also report the gym is not available, which undermines an important amenity cited elsewhere. This pattern suggests a reduction in lifestyle programming and communal engagement that materially affects resident quality of life.

Operational and management issues are another recurrent theme. Reviewers note rent increases alongside reductions in services, which contributes to perceptions of poor value for money and a sense of frustration. A concrete maintenance example — a microwave being out of service for two months — highlights concerns about responsiveness to resident needs and timeliness of repairs. At least one reviewer characterizes the atmosphere as "depressing," which likely stems from the combination of fewer activities, limited amenity access, and slow maintenance resolution.

Transportation and cost are also notable pain points. Several reviewers indicate there is no community transport service, forcing residents to rely on rideshares like Uber; the cost of such transportation is considered high and an added burden. This is especially relevant for an independent-living population that may expect on-site or scheduled transportation for errands, appointments and community outings. Coupled with reported rent increases and some perceptions of the community being "pricey," transportation gaps amplify financial and logistical strain for residents.

In summary, the dominant themes are a strong foundational set of amenities and a caring staff contrasted with a perceived recent decline in programming, amenity availability and maintenance responsiveness. For a prospective resident or family, the key considerations are: whether the advertised activities and facilities are currently running (and how consistently), how management is addressing maintenance and service issues, and the overall cost relative to the level of service being provided. The reviews suggest Hearthside Johns Creek can be an excellent independent-living option when fully operational, but there are troubling reports that suggest program cuts, limited access to amenities, transportation gaps, and maintenance delays have eroded resident experience for some. Prospective residents should verify current activity schedules, confirm transportation options, ask about recent fee changes, and request examples of maintenance turnaround times before committing.
