    Once lovely community, now declining

I chose this elegant, historic community because it felt like home - very clean, affordable, with caring, personable staff who knew us by name, lots of activities, home-cooked meals, and handy transportation. Lately it's been disappointing: short-staffed and sometimes stressed/unfriendly staff, no front-desk greeting, fewer activity options, meals that don't fill her up, and an overall dip in care quality (the recent changes/closure made it worse).

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Rathbone Home is mixed but leans positive in several core areas while showing notable and recurring concerns. Many reviewers emphasize the facility’s strengths: staff are frequently described as friendly, caring, personable, and attentive — in some accounts staff know residents and family members by first name and treat residents like family. The building and grounds receive consistently positive comments (described as clean, well-kept, historic, elegant, and home-like), and multiple reviewers highlight a warm, down-to-earth feel and a strong sense of community. Affordability is a clear advantage: Rathbone Home is repeatedly noted as one of the least expensive communities visited by families, which is an important factor for many prospective residents. Transportation to medical appointments and community events is also called out as a helpful service.

Staff and care quality are the most frequently discussed topics and also where opinions diverge. Several reviews praise high-quality care, good communication, and excellent, very satisfied experiences. Conversely, other reviewers report a recent decline: staff appearing unfriendly or stressed, the facility being short-staffed, and a perceived reduction in care quality over time. These contrasting accounts suggest inconsistent experiences between residents or changes in staffing/management that have affected service levels. One operational issue mentioned more than once is the absence of a front desk greeting or receptionist presence, which contributes to perceptions of reduced attentiveness for some families.

Dining receives mixed feedback. Multiple reviewers praise home-cooked or outstanding food, while at least one review rates the food poorly (rating of 2) and another mentions meal portions that are not filling. This split indicates variability in meal quality or portions that may depend on timing, staff availability, or individual expectations. Activity programming is similarly mixed: many reviewers report a good variety of daily activities and plentiful offerings, but at least one review notes a lack of activity variety, again pointing to inconsistency in the resident experience.

Facility-specific positives are strong: the historic mansion setting, cleanliness, and well-kept environment are repeatedly praised, and reviewers frequently describe residents feeling at home. There is at least one mention of a facility closure or closure-related disappointment; that comment signals a potentially important operational event for families to clarify during inquiry. Several comments also emphasize that staff are professional and provide good care, reinforcing the notion that when operations are functioning well the community delivers strong, compassionate support.

A clear pattern in these summaries is variability. Positive themes — friendly staff, cleanliness, community feel, affordability, and good transportation — appear often, but several reviewers highlight recent negative changes: stressed or unfriendly staff, short staffing, inconsistent meal experiences, and a perceived decline in care. These mixed signals suggest the facility can offer excellent care and an appealing environment, but prospective residents and families should verify current staffing levels, ask about recent changes in management or staffing, confirm meal policies and portion sizes, and inquire about the activity schedule and front-desk/visitor procedures. In short, Rathbone Home shows many strong qualities that families value, but there is enough reported inconsistency and some operational concerns that merit direct questions and a careful, up-to-date tour before making decisions.

    About Rathbone Home

Rathbone Home sits in a three-story mansion built in 1905 in the Classical Revival style, named for banker George Rathbone, and you'll see the old grandeur in the original hardwood floors, grand staircases, and crystal chandeliers all throughout, with remodeled areas that still hold onto that historic touch, but inside you find modern features like smart apartments with keyless entry, smart thermostats, built-in Alexas, and fast fiber internet by Wow, which makes it the first of its kind in Evansville, and the kitchens have Silestone counters and there are walk-in closets in the two-bedroom units. You get a choice of 1- or 2-bedroom rental units, even some for short-term use, and there's a fitness center with weights and cardio equipment, a laundromat, piano room, library, dining room, and a big landscaped courtyard, plus there are indoor and outdoor common spaces created for relaxing or spending time with others. It's in the trendy Haynie's Corner Arts District where local artists, wine tastings, and festivals are happening, and you can walk to restaurants, bars, shops, public library, the Ford Center, Civic Center, and you're only minutes away from Main Street, the medical school, hotels, and the walking and biking trail by the Ohio River. Rathbone Home plans to add a restaurant, wine-bar, and an event space in the building too.

The staff always tries to be friendly and caring, the meals are home-cooked and you get complimentary transportation for appointments and outings, and if you want, there's always something on the activity calendar-people use both on-site and off-site events to stay active and socialize. Rathbone Home has served as a retirement spot since 1905-with a few years as apartments for young professionals-and has hosted many well-to-do residents, always focusing on quality of life, neighborly connections, and making sure everyone feels welcome and cared for.

There's independent living and assisted living, and they tailor support to what each person needs, including non-ambulatory care, memory care, diabetic care, medication management, incontinence services, and healthcare support with staff and extra services on hand when necessary. The common spaces look beautiful, and the mansion keeps a home-like feeling with modern upgrades, upscale apartment features, and cultural spaces planned for art and community gatherings, so people get both comfort and connection in a place that feels a bit historic but acts very modern.
