    Great care but terrible management

I loved the facility - warm, wonderful community, friendly and helpful staff, very clean, good-sized rooms and layout, lots of activities (checkers, chess, events), helpful transportation, and generally very good, accommodating food (though sometimes bland or hit-or-miss). Major downsides: one-year lease and small, hotel-like apartments with little privacy. Most importantly, upper management was rude, money-driven and created constant drama that left my mother miserable and begging to move; I'd recommend the day-to-day care but strongly warn others about management.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is mixed but leans positive regarding frontline staff, daily life, cleanliness, activities, and basic amenities; however, serious and repeated concerns about upper-level management create a significant negative theme that potential residents and families should investigate further.

Care quality and staff: Multiple reviewers consistently praise the direct caregiving staff as friendly, helpful, and attentive. Several comments highlight that staff are well prepared for appointments and that dining staff will accommodate special requests (for example, offering salads). Residents and family members report being happy with care services, appreciate the cleanliness of the community, and note that transportation for doctor appointments is helpful. These patterns suggest that day-to-day resident interactions and caregiving are strengths of Lake Sherwood Village.

Facilities and living spaces: Opinions about living-space layout are mixed. While room sizes and overall layout receive positive mentions, several reviewers specifically complain about lack of privacy and a one-room apartment feel — no clear separation between bedroom and main living area and the presence of a one-room kitchenette. This leads some residents to describe their unit as hotel-like and not as "homey" as they would prefer. One reviewer also noted a one-year lease requirement, which may be a practical consideration that some find restrictive.

Dining: Dining impressions are varied. A number of reviewers say the food is "very good" or that they are pleased with meals, while others find the menu inconsistent or somewhat boring. There is a recurring note that while some food items are enjoyed, others are not, indicating variation in meal satisfaction. Dining staff are singled out positively for being accommodating, which helps mitigate some of the complaints about menu variety.

Activities and community life: The community appears active and affordable, with multiple references to successful events and organized activities like checkers and chess. Reviewers mention residents enjoying events and the activity program, and several state they would recommend the community. Overall these comments point to a social atmosphere that many residents appreciate.

Management and organizational concerns: The most serious and consistent negative feedback concerns upper management. Multiple reviewers use strong language — describing upper management as rude, sneaky, money-focused, and morally questionable — and report stressful interactions that negatively impacted residents, including at least one account of a resident being miserable and begging to move. These comments contrast sharply with the positive descriptions of frontline staff and suggest a disconnect between day-to-day caregivers and administrative leadership. The presence of "constant drama" and claims of management being "money hungry" are red flags that prospective residents and families should probe carefully during visits.

Patterns and recommendations for prospective residents: The dominant pattern is a split between strong frontline caregiving/cleanliness/activity programming and troubling reports about administration. If you are considering Lake Sherwood Village, it would be prudent to: (1) speak directly with current residents and family members about management interactions and any conflicts; (2) request to sample a meal and ask about menu rotation to assess dining consistency; (3) tour the specific apartment types you are considering to evaluate privacy and layout (and confirm lease terms like the one-year requirement); and (4) ask about transportation services and activity schedules, which several reviewers praised. In summary, the community offers many day-to-day positives, but management-related issues are a significant and recurring concern that warrant careful investigation before making a decision.

About Lake Sherwood Village Retirement Community

Lake Sherwood Village Retirement Community sits just outside of Inniswold, Louisiana, in Baton Rouge, about 2.2 miles from town and features 120 units for seniors age 55 and older. Established in 1998 by three brothers from Avoyelles Parish, the community was built to help active seniors keep their independence while still offering different types of help as their needs change, so you'll see options from independent living to assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and even home care through Nursing Care Connections, plus some helpful resources for long-term care planning and family caregiving, and there are people on staff who are trained, friendly, and ready to support both daily living and special needs, including medical transport to nearby hospitals and doctor appointments. The community's known for being comfortable and clean, with a focus on making everyone feel welcome, and it shows, since the place has a high rating-9.5 out of 10 on average, making it the second highest rated in the area-and people often say the staff are joyful and go out of their way to accommodate dietary preferences and personal needs.

Apartments come in studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom layouts, with each size giving a full kitchen that includes a microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator, and garbage disposal, and you'll notice bay windows in the living rooms for natural light and storage rooms on every floor, plus handicapped accessible bathrooms and doorways for those who need it. The sizes start at 547 square feet for a studio and go up to 936 for the two-bedroom, all age-restricted and maintenance-free, so you're not fixing anything yourself, and there's weekly housekeeping, meal delivery of breakfast and lunch, and free laundry rooms on each floor, along with expanded cable TV, individually controlled heating and air, Wi-Fi, valet trash, and an in-house channel with announcements. There's a private dining room residents can reserve, a beauty salon for haircuts, and a chapel for religious services, and on top of that, there's a fishing lake right on campus, walking trails, a library, and plenty of indoor and outdoor gathering areas where people get together for social activities, organized events, and spiritual gatherings.

Lake Sherwood Village has a big focus on making daily life meaningful, so there are a lot of programs, including activities that mix fun, education, fitness, and spiritual options, including devotional services both on and off campus and social events aimed at helping everyone connect. You'll find help around the clock, including 24-hour staffing and emergency call systems for peace of mind, and transportation to stores, banks, malls, and medical offices is available for those who need to get out and run errands or keep up with doctor appointments. Meals are planned to be both nutritious and good tasting, and they're prepared by a team that works to meet different dietary preferences and needs. The grounds are designed to make it easy for people to spend time outdoors, whether they want to walk, fish by the lake, or just visit with friends, and the building itself aims to promote comfort, safety, and a true sense of community, which helps people feel at home without giving up the freedom and privacy that comes with having your own apartment.

Residents say the place feels inviting and warm, with a culture centered on helping one another and promoting both independence and friendship, and families notice the attention to detail when it comes to cleanliness, maintenance, and meeting health needs. Pets are welcome, and the facility keeps the minimum age at 55, so everyone there is at a similar stage in life. Lake Sherwood Village keeps residents informed through a monthly newsletter and activity calendar, and offers extra support for people as their needs change, including memory care and more help with activities of daily living when it's needed. The views overlook Lake Sherwood at the entrance to Lake Sherwood Acres, and dining, parks, and other Baton Rouge activities are close by, so there's always something to do or see outside the community too.
