    Pleasant independent living with caveats

I live here and overall I'm pleased - the staff are caring, friendly and very helpful, and the community feels safe, clean and well-maintained. My apartment is large, condo-style with a full kitchen and in-unit washer/dryer, weekly housekeeping, and good value for the monthly rate. Dining is generally enjoyable with many choices, two meals included (third available), but service and hours can be inconsistent, especially weekends. There are lots of activities, free scheduled transportation and convenient proximity to hospitals/University of Memphis. New ownership has made cosmetic improvements, but management changes, rent increases and limited around-the-clock care are concerns. I'd recommend it for independent seniors who want a social, secure place - not for someone needing high-level nursing.

    About Highland Terrace at Midtown

Highland Terrace at Midtown sits in the heart of Memphis, Tennessee, and offers a wide range of living and care options for seniors starting at age 55, and what you'll find if you walk through the doors are friendly faces and a community that really tries to meet people where they are, whether folks want to keep to themselves in a private studio or join activities in one of the common areas. The apartments come as studios, one-bedroom, or two-bedrooms, with full kitchens, air conditioning, cable or satellite TV, and wheelchair-accessible bathrooms with both showers and bathtubs. There's both independent living and more supportive settings like assisted living, memory care, respite stays, and nursing care, with staff available around-the-clock along with nurses on staff and a doctor on call, plus specialists who can help with physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, dentistry, and podiatry. You've got many different ways to stay active, whether you like group fitness classes like Forever Fit, stretching, Wii bowling, or just tending to the raised garden beds outside, and sometimes there'll be live music, happy hours, wine tastings, birthday parties, BBQs, picnics, or outings. Meals get cooked by a professional chef and served restaurant-style, and they offer both meat and vegetarian options, plus special meals for guests. There's a bistro café for lighter snacks and coffee, and both indoor and outdoor common spaces where folks can sit, visit, read in the library, use a computer, or join an art class or devotional activity.

Highland Terrace has thoughtful safety measures like medication management, medical alert systems including guides for Bay Alarm Medical, Medical Guardian, and ADT, and secure entry. There are hearing aid resources and options for senior technology like cable or internet plans, and cell phones suited for seniors, including Jitterbug phones. Residents can also access resources for ID theft protection, medication dispensers, and home security. The facility allows cats and dogs under a pet policy, and both indoor and outdoor areas are designed to be accessible for wheelchairs, with ground-floor units available. Staff speak English, community spaces are clean and air-conditioned, smoking isn't allowed, and there's resident parking, plus transportation services if folks need to get to appointments or just want to take a day trip. Housekeeping and beautician services are available onsite to keep things easy, and you'll see that the staff offer both companionship and help with more hands-on care depending on what each person needs. The facility has received some good reviews and was recognized with awards like the Best of Senior Living, but mostly, it seems focused on helping folks find comfort, activities, and connection without the stress of home upkeep in a Memphis neighborhood people know.
