      Pleasant facility but safety concerns

I found the facility clean, home-like and peaceful - private rooms, home-cooked meals, porches with a woods view, many activities, and a caring, hands-on owner and staff who create a family-like atmosphere. Residents generally seemed well cared for and hospice support was available. However, my experience was mixed: my mother could not stay due to sundowning, staff behavior was inconsistent, and I observed cleanliness/safety issues (a single shared bathroom) that led me to file a complaint with Adult Protective Services. I'd recommend with caution - inspect cleanliness and staffing closely before deciding.

      Summary review

Overall sentiment across the review summaries is mixed but leans positive in frequency: many reviewers describe Calco's Assisted Living Inc. as a small, home-like facility with kind, caring staff and an involved, hands-on owner. Common strengths cited include private rooms, a neat and well-kept environment, home-cooked meals, a quiet country setting with porches and woods views, and a family atmosphere where residents receive personal attention. Multiple summaries emphasize engaging social activities, dementia-related programming, and availability of hospice support, suggesting that the facility provides a range of supportive services appropriate for many assisted-living needs.

Care quality is portrayed positively in numerous reviews: residents are described as happy, well cared-for, and receiving personal, family-style attention from staff and management. Several reviewers specifically single out the owner for being attentive and hands-on, and others note that staff are knowledgeable or highly trained. The small size and limited number of residents is repeatedly presented as an advantage that enables individualized care and close relationships between staff and residents.

However, there are serious and recurring negative reports that cannot be overlooked. A subset of reviews raises grave cleanliness and safety concerns — specific allegations include fecal matter on nails, clothes, and bedding and an unclean shared bathroom. One review states there is a single bathroom for all residents, which may create privacy and hygiene issues. At least one reviewer reported safety/neglect concerns and said a complaint was filed with Adult Protective Services (APS). Another reviewer described a 'horrible experience' for their mother and reported inconsistent staff behavior, noting friendly smiles during visits but different conduct otherwise. Several comments also indicate challenges caring for residents with advanced dementia or sundowning; in one account a prospective resident could not remain at the facility because of sundowning and later passed away after hospitalizations. These negative accounts stand in stark contrast to the more positive reports and represent potential red flags.

Facility and amenities are generally praised by many reviewers as clean, comfortable, and well maintained, with private rooms and a 'home away from home' feel. The country setting, front and back porches with rockers, and quiet surroundings are repeatedly mentioned as benefits for residents and families who prefer a peaceful environment. At the same time, the remote or 'out-of-the-way' location is noted by some as a potential drawback for family convenience or accessibility.

Dining and activities receive favorable comments: meals are described as homemade and pleasing, and reviewers report plentiful social activities and engagement opportunities. Hospice support and dementia care programs are cited in positive reviews, implying an ability to provide a continuum of supportive services for many residents.

In synthesis, the pattern is one of many consistently positive experiences centered on personalized, family-like care, cleanliness, an involved owner, homemade meals, and a tranquil setting — balanced against a smaller number of serious complaints about hygiene, safety, and the facility's ability to manage certain dementia-related behaviors. These negative reports are significant because they concern resident safety and regulatory complaints (APS), and they contradict the majority of positive cleanliness and care descriptions.

Recommendations for prospective families based on these mixed reviews: visit the facility in person and observe hygiene practices and common areas, ask specifically about bathroom arrangements and infection-control protocols, inquire how the facility handles dementia-related behaviors and sundowning (and request recent examples), request references from current families, ask about staff training, turnover, and supervision, and check state inspection reports and any APS or complaint history. Given the strong praise from many families alongside a few severe allegations, careful, targeted vetting and repeated in-person observations will help determine whether Calco's Assisted Living meets an individual resident’s needs and safety expectations.

The place feels homey and is kept tidy, with comfort and safety in mind, so folks get the choice of private rooms or one-bedroom options, and there's always staff on hand-day or night-for medication help or special care, even if someone needs a hand getting up or transferring to a chair or bed. There's a secured memory care wing inside its own building for people living with Alzheimer's or dementia, complete with safety systems like bracelets and alerts to keep everyone safe, and the staff can help with the trickier things, such as wandering or high-acuity health concerns, along with visiting nurses, therapists, and caretakers for added support. Folks can expect programs focused on their particular needs, help with blood sugar checks and insulin shots, plus reminders for bathroom visits, and the leadership, which includes an owner who takes part in daily life, encourages a sense of belonging and independence, while listening to families and working alongside health professionals to shape care plans just right for each person. Prices average about $2,947 a month, and there's a menu of services including assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing, all kept simple and straightforward so residents and their families can feel at ease, with reviews giving it an overall good reputation and a gentle, steady sense of care.
