    Friendly staff, good meals, unsuitable

I toured the community and had a very pleasant, informative visit - staff greeted me at the door, were friendly, knew me by name and gave a compassionate, diligent tour. Meals are superb with dietary accommodations and three meals a day; the private one-bed apartments are a good size with microwave and fridge (no full kitchen). Activities are excellent - concerts, piano, bingo - and residents stay busy. The building was clean and staff attentive, but it felt older and many residents appeared more disabled, so it's not suited to my needs.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is positive, with consistent praise for the staff, dining, and activity offerings. Multiple reviewers described staff as pleasant, diligent, compassionate, and attentive — checking on residents regularly and learning them by name. The touring experience is repeatedly highlighted as strong: visitors were greeted at the door, found tour staff polite and informative, and appreciated brochures and answers to questions. Cleanliness and friendly interactions are noted repeatedly, reinforcing a generally welcoming atmosphere.

Regarding accommodations and facilities, several reviewers complimented private one-bedroom apartments that are a good size and equipped for independent living with microwaves and refrigerators. At least one reviewer specifically mentioned a brand-new building, which suggests modern accommodations in part of the campus. However, there are contrasting impressions: other reviewers said the facility looked old, and there are specific layout concerns raised such as rooms without bedroom doors and apartments without full kitchens. These points indicate some variability in building age and unit design across the community and underscore the importance of an in-person visit to confirm which unit types and building sections meet an individual’s needs.

Dining is a strong point in these reviews. Multiple comments call the food superb and describe three meals a day with dietary accommodations available. Snacks are provided during activities, and meal service seems to be a consistent, well-regarded element of the resident experience. The activity program is also a standout: reviewers mention a robust schedule that keeps residents busy, including bingo and other regular events, plus special musical programming. The community appears to be particularly music-friendly — allowing instruments such as harps and violins and hosting a grand piano and concerts (for example, an Easter concert with a local orchestra) — which highlights cultural engagement opportunities for residents.

There are some notable concerns and patterns to be aware of. A few reviewers felt the overall campus or some sections looked old, creating a mixed impression relative to the comment about a brand-new building. Practical layout issues — specifically lack of bedroom doors and absence of kitchens in some units — were mentioned and could impact privacy or independence for certain prospective residents. One reviewer observed that residents appeared disabled and concluded the community was not suited to their needs; this suggests the resident population may skew toward individuals requiring some assistance or that the facility’s model or atmosphere may not match every prospective resident’s expectations. The quiet atmosphere noted by some could be a pro for those seeking calm, but a con for those wanting a more socially active or independent environment.

In summary, the reviews portray a community with strong staff, good care practices, clean facilities, excellent dining, and an engaging activities program — especially for residents who enjoy music and structured social events. At the same time, there is variability in building condition and apartment layouts that raises specific concerns about privacy and independence (no bedroom doors, no full kitchens), and a few reviewers found the resident mix or atmosphere not aligned with their personal needs. Prospective residents and families would benefit from a focused tour that inspects specific apartment types and building sections, asks about resident demographics and level of care commonly provided, and confirms whether the dining and activity offerings match their preferences.

    About Excelcare at Newark

Excelcare at Newark sits at 4949 Ogletown Stanton Road in Newark, Delaware, and the place really focuses on helping older adults in different stages of life, so you've got people there who want to enjoy independent living without the stress of a big home, people who might need some help getting dressed or remembering their medicine, and then there are folks who need skilled nursing or rehab after a hospital stay, so they've got staff and care programs that adapt to all that, and you'll find registered nurses around all day and night for people who need serious medical care, so it's not just help with a shower or laundry, though they do have housekeeping and meals and special dietary options too, but more advanced things like medication management, physical rehab, and even, for folks who need it, memory care for Alzheimer's or dementia with special features to help folks feel safe and less confused. They run social activities and daily programs, so you could find yourself gardening or attending movie nights, and there are going to be fitness rooms, business centers, and areas for art and music, and even libraries and game rooms, so a person can stay engaged if they want to. The units come with private bathrooms, air conditioning, kitchenettes, and you can get internet and cable TV, and if you'd rather have a furnished room, they have those too. Residents can get rides, laundry service, help moving in, and concierge service for everyday needs, and taken together it's a community where there's support for short or long stays, rehab, skilled nursing, and even hospice care, because they're set up for medical needs of all types, including diagnostic imaging and therapy, and there's a hospital accreditation status which means they meet safety standards, and they get oversight from Excelcare Health Management. The staff has a reputation for treating folks like family, always putting care first and focusing on each person's needs and routines, and after a $1.2 million renovation, things are modern and pleasant, but still feel warm and welcoming, and in the end, it's a place where someone can have help when needed but also live life at their own pace.
