    Great rehab, inconsistent and unsanitary

I have mixed feelings about this place. The transitional program, PT center and many attentive, professional staff gave my dad an unbelievable recovery-daily therapies, activities and good food helped him regain independence (cane only outside, driving again). It's convenient and social (three floors, rec rooms on each, private two-person rooms, cafeteria, small outside area) and I appreciated the strict one-at-a-time room entry COVID policy. However care was inconsistent-arrogant nurses, unsanitary issues (I found a rat in his room despite pest traps) and occasional sub-par treatment-so check cleanliness and staff consistency first.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the collected reviews for Hartwyck At Oak Tree is mixed but leans positive around rehabilitation outcomes, staff attentiveness, and available amenities. Multiple reviewers praised the facility for effective therapy and transitional living programs that helped residents regain independence and mobility. Specific success stories were mentioned, including residents who progressed to using only a cane outside, achieved independence in daily living, or even returned to driving. The presence of a physical therapy center, recreational rooms on each floor, and organized activities and daily games contributes to a rehabilitative and socially engaging environment.

Staff performance is the most frequently cited strength. Several reviewers described staff as excellent, attentive, caring, professional, and thorough—some even noted a very high staff-to-resident ratio (phrased as almost one staff per elderly) and that staff actively include residents in activities. This attentive model appears to support the positive rehabilitation outcomes and the facility’s ability to deliver efficient, need-focused care for many residents.

Facility amenities and layout were commonly noted: the community spans three floors, with recreation spaces and dining (a cafeteria) available, and rooms are private or semi-private (up to two residents per room). Reviewers described the setting as convenient and social, making it easy for families and guests to visit. However, multiple comments also identified limitations in outdoor space—there is an outside area but not a large one—and the campus sits on a major road, which may bring noise or traffic concerns for some families.

Despite the many positive points, there are significant negative reports that create a contrast and indicate inconsistent quality. A subset of reviewers reported subpar or even “terrible” care and described nurses as arrogant or unprofessional. These accounts suggest variability in staff behavior or management oversight between shifts or units. The most serious concerns relate to sanitation and pest control: at least one reviewer reported a rat in a room and the presence of cockroach traps, describing conditions as unsanitary and disgusting. Such reports are red flags that should be investigated and addressed by management, as they can seriously undermine confidence in the facility.

There are also operational issues noted: a reported COVID case resulted in a strict one-at-a-time room entry policy, which some families may find restrictive during outbreaks. Privacy may be a consideration as well, since rooms can be shared by two residents. Taken together, reviews depict a facility that often delivers strong rehabilitation and actively engaged, caring staff—producing notable recovery outcomes for many residents—but with documented and concerning lapses in cleanliness and an uneven experience of care for others.

In summary, Hartwyck At Oak Tree appears to offer robust therapy services, high-touch staff support, and social programming that enable many residents to improve mobility and regain independence. Prospective residents and families should weigh these strengths against reports of inconsistent caregiving, pest and sanitation issues, and some restrictive operational policies. Visiting the facility, observing staff-resident interactions, asking about pest-control and infection protocols, and touring available room options would be prudent steps for anyone considering this community, given the clear variability in reviewer experiences.

    About Hartwyck At Oak Tree

Hartwyck At Oak Tree sits on a spacious, wooded campus within JFK University Medical Center, and you can tell they've put some care into making the place feel home-like and comfortable, trying to keep things warm and friendly even though there's a lot of medical care happening around you. The facility offers senior living services along with short-term and long-term skilled nursing care. For people healing from injury or illness, they have a range of rehabilitation services like physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and the staff will set up care plans specific to what each person needs, so nothing is one-size-fits-all here.

One of the main features at Hartwyck At Oak Tree is its focus on advanced treatments and an interdisciplinary approach, with a team that includes doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, therapists, social workers, and dietitians all working together every day of the week, every hour of the day. They run the Center for Brain Injuries Extended Recovery Unit, where personalized therapy plans and brain injury rehabilitation are offered, and this is also where you'll find professionals skilled in head trauma, a medical director who's board certified in Brain Injury Medicine, and another who's a board-certified pulmonologist handling respiratory issues. They've got a ventilator unit staffed at all hours with respiratory therapists, and they have a history of helping patients who rely on ventilators to begin breathing on their own again, if possible.

For children, there are pediatric rehabilitation services, including counseling and therapeutic support, so families dealing with a child's difficult recovery can get help in one place. The Center for Head Injuries offers full services, including neurology, neurosurgery, and rehabilitation. Vocational rehabilitation is available too if someone needs help getting back to work skills after a setback. Cognitive therapy, brain trauma care, and cancer care happen here along with heart care, orthopedics, and behavioral health services.

They welcome both older adults looking for a safe, supportive place to live as well as those needing focused medical care, and group activities help keep people socially and emotionally engaged. The amenities are designed to be accessible, with onsite restrooms, parking, and wheelchair access for anyone who needs it. The staff pays attention to quality of care, and the place has earned a five-star rating from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which isn't something every nursing facility gets. The main thing to know is that while Hartwyck At Oak Tree has a lot of medical resources, they still try to provide the steady, consistent support and attention that helps people feel cared for, both with big treatments and little daily comforts.
