    Good rehab, inconsistent long-term care

I placed my mother here for rehab and overall it's a beautiful, well-run facility with excellent therapy three times a week, varied activities, a private room option, and many skilled, compassionate staff who genuinely helped her mobility and socialization. COVID measures were proactive and meals/menus are varied, though food can be hit-or-miss and sometimes cold. Staffing shortages and uneven staff quality led to communication problems, late meds, missed turns/call lights, cleanliness and laundry issues, and occasional lapses in care. For a rehab-focused short stay I was pleased, but I'd be cautious about long-term placement given the inconsistency.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment is mixed but consistent in certain patterns: Stratford Manor Rehabilitation And Care Center is generally regarded as a strong choice for short-term rehabilitation and skilled nursing needs, with particular praise for its physical therapy/rehabilitation department, many compassionate and dedicated caregivers, and a range of activities and amenities. Multiple reviewers credit the facility with meaningful mobility and social improvements for residents, proactive COVID-19 policies early in the pandemic, and an operational setup that in many ways supports rehab-focused outcomes. Reviewers repeatedly note that the facility has a number of strengths: a visible therapy focus, well-trained rehab staff, cooperative caregivers, varied menus and activities, and parts of the building that are attractive and well maintained.

However, several recurrent and serious concerns temper those positives. Understaffing and manpower shortages are a dominant theme; reviewers describe nurses and aides as overworked, which translated into inconsistent care quality, long response times to call lights, late medication administration, and occasional professional lapses. While many staff are praised as loving and hardworking, others are described as rude, inattentive, or lazy — indicating variability in staff performance that appears to be linked at least partly to workload and turnover. These staffing issues contribute to patient safety and comfort concerns raised by some families, including reports of UTIs, bedsores, and incidents that necessitated ambulance transfers.

Facility condition and housekeeping present a mixed picture. Several reviewers describe the facility as beautiful and well maintained, while others report outdated rooms, old furniture, small/old televisions, a horrible smell in some areas, and poor housekeeping. Laundry problems are a repeated specific complaint: missing clothes, long waits to locate garments, and privacy concerns because clothes were labeled with patient names and room numbers. Several reviewers indicated that these laundry and cleanliness issues persisted through discharge, suggesting an ongoing operational weakness rather than isolated incidents.

Dining and activities receive generally positive but varied feedback. Many reviewers report good, varied menus and enjoyable activities such as bingo, game rooms, and exercise options — and they say these programming elements helped residents become more social and engaged. At the same time, food quality is described as hit-or-miss by multiple families, with occasional reports of cold or unpalatable meals. Activity offerings appear robust, supporting the facility's rehab and social goals, though individual experiences of program quality may differ.

Communication and management practices elicit mixed reactions. Some reviewers call the facility well run and praise its pandemic resilience and responsiveness; others raise concerns about miscommunication, appointment cancellations, and customer relations. A few reviewers felt there was a perceived emphasis on billing or administrative priorities over individualized long-term resident care, and some said the facility is more suited to short-term rehab than to long-term custodial care. This aligns with several comments that Stratford Manor works well for rehab stays but may not be the best fit for families seeking long-term residential nursing care.

In summary, Stratford Manor appears to excel at rehabilitation services, therapy-driven recovery, and offering engaging activities under generally compassionate care by many staff members. Repeated weaknesses center on staffing levels and consistency, housekeeping and laundry reliability, variable food quality, and occasional lapses in clinical care or communication. These factors create a polarized set of experiences: families whose loved ones received attentive, effective rehab care reported good outcomes, whereas others experienced troubling neglect, delayed medications, hygiene concerns, or administrative frustrations. Prospective residents and families should weigh the facility's strong rehab orientation and therapy capabilities against the reported variability in daily nursing care, cleanliness, and administrative consistency, and may wish to ask targeted questions about staffing ratios, laundry procedures, long-term care expertise, and how the facility addresses missed medications and call light response times before committing to a stay.

About Stratford Manor Rehabilitation And Care Center

Stratford Manor Rehabilitation And Care Center sits in West Orange, New Jersey, offering long-term care, short-term rehabilitation, and sub-acute care with a strong mission that focuses on resident well-being. The center has 131 certified beds and averages about 119 residents per day. Private and semi-private rooms come with private bathrooms and cable television, and the whole place provides wireless internet access, so staying connected isn't hard. Pictures on their website show amenities and spaces such as a bright hair salon, a library with Internet access, lounge areas with flat screen TVs, an aquarium, and common areas designed for social activities, which are held daily for residents at all levels of functioning.

The center operates as a for-profit LLC, affiliated with MB Healthcare and is part of the Health Care Association of New Jersey. Indirect owners are Health Care Centers of NJ LLC, Stratford Manor Rehabilitation and Care Center LLC, Moshe Brodt, and Cindie Frankl, but there's no public detail about exactly who manages the day-to-day operations or the employees. Nursing staff provide about 3.55 hours per resident each day, a bit less than the state average, but the nurse turnover rate is noticeably lower than other facilities in the area. Stratford Manor hires healthcare professionals to supervise skilled nursing, wound and orthopedic care, pain management, and recovery programs. They also provide rehabilitation services in a therapy gym described as state-of-the-art and offer programs for residents with Alzheimer's and dementia. There's help available for basic daily needs like housekeeping, personal care, dressing and grooming, and companion care.

The facility sets up infection control procedures and keeps policies ready for COVID-19, along with regular health education, counseling services, and support programs for patients who need extra help. You'll find a hair salon and a beauty and barber shop, plus restaurant-style dining with gourmet specialty meals-including diets tailored for special needs-and meals are served by wait staff with linen and fine china, which is a little different from what you'd expect in many facilities. All rooms have private bathrooms, which helps with privacy. Stratford Manor also provides hospice and respite care.

On the inspection side, the center was listed with 21 deficiencies in its last report, including at least one for infection control and several for nutrition, dietary standards, and pharmacy services-like not always following food sourcing and storage rules, or ensuring monthly drug reviews by a pharmacist, so those looking for up-to-date state inspection details might want to check recent reports. All told, Stratford Manor has a mix of modern amenities, daily activities, and health programs meant for a wide range of needs, though its inspection history and nurse staffing are points you'll want to consider while looking at options.
