    Helpful staff, severe neglect, unacceptable

I wanted to like this place - the staff I met were warm and helpful, the food was healthy and appetizing, and amenities (large terrace with Northern Manhattan views, Shabbat chapel, salon, gym, outdoor patio and big movie library) genuinely made my grandmother happy. But the decor is bland, renovations are outdated, resident floors are poorly maintained, and administration can be unprofessional. More importantly, we suffered serious neglect: missing and urine-soaked belongings, an insultingly low compensation offer, alleged racial bias, and delayed care that resulted in an amputation - we moved her to an excellent nursing home. Because of those failures I cannot recommend this facility despite some caring staff.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is mixed and polarized: several reviewers praise the staff, food, and facility amenities, while others report serious, sometimes traumatic incidents and management failures. Positive comments emphasize compassionate and helpful caregivers, a welcoming atmosphere, and specific amenities that enhance resident life. Negative comments describe loss and damage of irreplaceable personal items, hygiene issues with clothing, alleged negligence and delayed medical care with severe consequences, and concerns about administration and staffing.

Care quality and staffing: Many reviews highlight caring and helpful staff who create a welcoming environment and make family members comfortable leaving loved ones there (one reviewer specifically says their grandmother is happy). At the same time, multiple serious allegations counter that picture — including claims of staff negligence, an accusation that delayed care led to an amputation, and examples of mishandled personal belongings and urine-soaked clothing. Several reviews explicitly call for more staff on each resident floor, indicating that staffing levels may be uneven or insufficient at peak times. Because the claims range from positive caregiving experiences to severe adverse outcomes, the overall impression is inconsistent care quality that may depend on unit, shift, or individual staff members.

Management and operations: Reviewers are split on operations. Some describe the facility as well run, but others say it is not well operated, that administration is unprofessional, and that the facility’s five-star rating should be questioned. There are specific complaints about how incidents were handled — notably a report of missing irreplaceable items (photos, a quilt, artwork) and an "insultingly low" compensation offer, which implies dissatisfaction with the facility’s incident resolution and compensation policies. An allegation of racial bias adds a serious concern about equitable treatment, though these are reviewer claims and not independently verified in the summaries provided. These patterns suggest potential problems with incident response, transparency, and management accountability.

Facilities, environment, and activities: The physical facility and programming receive mostly positive notes. Multiple reviewers mention a large terrace with views of Northern Manhattan, an outdoor patio/courtyard view, and communal amenities such as a temple/chape for Shabbat services, a hair salon, an exercise room, and a large collection of movies. These features point to meaningful social, spiritual, and recreational options for residents. On the downside, several reviews criticize the appearance and upkeep of resident floors, calling the decor bland or sterile and renovations outdated. This contrast suggests that while communal and publicly visible amenities may be attractive and well-appointed, some living areas could be in need of cosmetic or operational improvements.

Dining and atmosphere: Dining is reported positively — reviewers describe healthy, appetizing food. The general odor/air quality is described as a "fresh neutral smell," which is a favorable point for a long-term care environment. These aspects bolster the facility’s day-to-day livability for many residents.

Notable patterns and practical takeaways: The reviews reveal a clear split between families who are pleased with staff, amenities, and food, and those who experienced severe problems involving personal property loss, perceived neglect, or medical harm. Because the negative accounts include serious allegations (delayed care leading to amputation, alleged racial bias, and poor incident resolution), they should be treated as substantial concerns to investigate further rather than dismissed as minor complaints. Prospective residents and families should weigh the appealing amenities and reported compassionate staff against the reported administrative and care failures. Practical next steps for someone considering this facility would include touring multiple resident floors, asking for staffing ratios by shift, reviewing incident and grievance procedures, inquiring about policies for personal belongings and compensation, and speaking with current residents and families about their recent experiences to get a clearer picture of consistency across units and times of day.

About Fort Tryon Center For Rehabilitation And Nursing

Fort Tryon Center For Rehabilitation And Nursing sits in the Cloisters section of Upper Manhattan and looks out over the city from its outdoor terraces, and with 205 beds, the facility supports folks leaving the hospital who need rehab or longer-term care. You'll find wound care, tracheostomy care, dementia and hospice care, a Long Term Home Health Care Program, and full skilled nursing, so many medical needs are taken care of on site, and they even have IV therapy and a special focus on infection prevention. Nurses and therapists work closely with patients through rehab, including neurological, orthopedic, and wound care services, and there're therapies like physical, occupational, and speech, so patients can get stronger for returning home or managing their recovery. The staff tries for a warm and devoted environment, and family is always encouraged to visit, with no fixed visiting hours, though they suggest coming between 11 am and 8 pm, and you can even bring children or pets if you follow their guidelines, and for special occasions, you can reserve outdoor terrace sections.

Meal services pay attention to health needs and Jewish traditions, with a Glatt Kosher kitchen run under supervision of the Vaad Harabanim of Queens with a mashgiach present each day; special meals are prepared for Shabbos and Yom Tov holidays, and meals are served on a set schedule in both dining rooms and resident rooms. The recreation room has a big TV, Wii, and plenty of puzzles, books, and magazines, and there's an internet café, a well-stocked library, and computer access with free Wi-Fi and cable TV, plus premium channels, and a beauty salon and personal laundry service are also on site. Medical suites handle geriatric and internal medicine along with dental and podiatry needs, and for rehab or daily needs, staff run adult day care programs and offer pet therapy. The whole building is smoke-free, and the staff tries to keep it comfortable and safe, using infection prevention and safety protocols for all emergencies. Visitors can easily get to the building on the A Train or the M4 bus to 190th Street, and free parking is available at the Laz Parking Garage nearby with validation from the front desk. The facility allows gift giving, holds seasonal toy drives, and has regular activities to help people feel at home during their stay or rehab.
