    Caring staff, active veteran community

I'm overall satisfied - the staff are unbelievably caring and responsive, the place is clean, bright and veteran-focused with lots of activities (gardening, bingo, movies) and an affordable price, and I made friends quickly. Downsides: no private rooms - two hospital-style beds per cramped room - and management seemed unhelpful; there have been DHHS complaints and a few care incidents (scabies, a fracture, a black eye) reported. Meals were mediocre at first but improving, memory care has regular family/health meetings, and I would still recommend it for attentive, active veteran care.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans positive with strong, repeated praise for frontline staff and the direct care residents receive. Multiple reviewers used words like "unbelievable," "great," "attentive," and "caring" to describe nurses, aides, and support staff. Reviewers consistently reported that the day-to-day care quality felt high and that staff were responsive to resident needs. Family involvement appears encouraged: reviews mention twice-monthly family meetings and quarterly one-on-one health meetings, and frequent family visits were noted. The presence of a memory care wing and veteran-focused programming are highlighted as important features for the facility’s population.

Facility cleanliness and atmosphere receive predominantly favorable remarks. Several reviewers described the home as very clean, homey, bright, airy, and peaceful — without the antiseptic smell sometimes associated with institutional settings. Housekeeping and food service staff were explicitly praised in some reviews. At the same time, multiple comments emphasize that most living spaces are shared two-bed rooms; rooms were described by some as hospital-like, cramped, and giving an institutional impression to visitors. Occasional localized problems — such as a rare odor of waste — were reported but appeared to be exceptions rather than the norm.

Activities and social life are clear strengths. Reviewers pointed to a robust activities program including bingo, cards, movies, and gardening therapy. These programs contributed to residents making new friends and enjoying daily life. The facility’s focus on veterans and veteran-centered ceremonies and programming was viewed positively by many, though one reviewer noted an "army casket ceremony impression," which suggests that some aspects of the veteran-focused culture can feel formal or ceremonial to certain visitors.

Dining impressions are mixed but improving. Several reviews said meals were mediocre at first but noted improvement over time; some reviewers reported that the food looked and tasted good. Cooking staff received explicit praise in at least one review, indicating variability but an overall trend toward better meal quality in recent accounts.

Serious concerns around management and safety appear repeatedly and are the most significant negative pattern in the reviews. While frontline staff are widely praised, a number of reviewers described management as unhelpful. Several reviewers mentioned DHHS complaints and specific care problems, including reports of scabies, a fractured bone, and a black eye. These are nontrivial safety and oversight concerns that contrast sharply with the positive accounts of day-to-day care and cleanliness. The presence of regulatory complaints and the specific incidents reported suggest inconsistent oversight or lapses in some aspects of clinical supervision or infection control.

In summary, the Nc State Veterans Home - Fayetteville is frequently commended for its caring, attentive staff, strong activity programming, veteran-focused environment, affordability, and generally clean, bright facility atmosphere. Key strengths center on resident engagement, housekeeping, and direct caregiving. However, families should be aware of recurring concerns: mostly shared, somewhat institutional-feeling rooms; occasional odors; and more importantly, reports of management shortcomings and documented DHHS complaints with specific reported incidents affecting resident safety. The reviews suggest a facility that provides good day-to-day care and social engagement for many residents but may have systemic oversight or management issues that warrant asking specific questions about recent regulatory findings, incident response, infection control, and availability of private rooms when considering placement.

About Nc State Veterans Home - Fayetteville

Nc State Veterans Home - Fayetteville sits at 214 Cochran Avenue, right next to the Fayetteville VA Medical Center, and has served North Carolina veterans and their families for many years, though the building has struggled a lot due to its location on terrain that floods easily and the serious water damage that happened during Hurricane Matthew, and after years of talk about closing it, the state decided to recommend renovations, but costs for repairs went over $20 million, so it ended up facing closure with only 17 of the original 85 residents left when the decision came down, even though it once held up to 150 skilled nursing beds and won awards for nursing home care as recently as 2022. Pruitt Health operates this facility in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, and people have known it for its skilled nursing care, short-term rehabilitation for those moving between the hospital and home, and intermediate care for veterans who need constant nursing help. Over the years, it's offered mental health care, drug addiction rehabilitation, outpatient services, adult daycare, respite care, personal care, developmental therapy, and other support for both veterans and some qualifying family members, all with a goal to respect the service of the people who lived there, and folks have called it a caring place, even though the building itself became harder and harder to keep up. The facility's history of possible closure and its commitment to veterans made it part of bigger plans to replace aging buildings, and through all of it, an administrator named Whitney Bell oversaw the day-to-day care and operations. While Nc State Veterans Home - Fayetteville will stop serving residents after February 1, its story stands out for the services it offered and the unique problems it faced because of its location and age.
