    Bright facility, understaffed, missed care

I liked the bright, well-decorated building at first, but my experience was mixed. Chronic understaffing and rude, overworked employees meant long waits for call buttons, delayed or missed meds, ignored wounds/swollen feet, unreported falls and even severe bedsores. Food was often cold, wrong for diets or small in portion, and cleanliness/urine odors were recurring. Rehab and some nurses/therapists were excellent and a new administrator helped morale, but management can be unresponsive. I'd consider it for short-term therapy with family oversight, not for hands-off long-term care.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment is strongly mixed and polarized: a clear pattern emerges where the rehabilitation/therapy wing and many therapy staff receive consistently high praise, while nursing care, overnight staffing, food service, cleanliness, and management responsiveness are the most frequently criticized areas.

Rehabilitation and therapy are a major strength. Numerous reviews describe the therapy department as "phenomenal," "outstanding," and the "bright spot." Patients and families repeatedly credit therapists with strong clinical skills, empathy, attentive one-on-one care, and successful short-term rehab outcomes that led to safe discharges. Several reviewers explicitly stated they would recommend the facility for rehabilitation because of the therapy team's reliability, helpful progress, and good coordination with home health services after discharge.

Staffing and nursing quality are highly inconsistent and a primary source of concern. Many reviews single out individual nurses, CNAs, and receptionists as compassionate and dedicated; others report abusive, disrespectful, or neglectful behavior. A recurring complaint is chronic understaffing and overworked personnel, which reviewers link to long call-bell response times (reports of 15 minutes or more), delayed pain medication, skipped or incorrect medication administration, and missed or delayed wound care. Night staffing is repeatedly called out as a weak point: reviewers report ignored night call bells, no nighttime supervisor, and patients left in pain for hours. There are multiple reports of staff laughing at or snapping at patients, and several accounts of CNAs or nurses failing to maintain dignity and respect for residents.

Safety and clinical care lapses are serious and repeatedly documented in the reviews. Reported incidents include unreported falls resulting in broken ribs or broken legs, lack of bed alarms, delayed calls to 911, wrong medications or dosages, medication given without proper checks (for example, Tylenol given without verifying swallowing ability), and missed or delayed physical and occupational therapy sessions that were billed but not attended. Wound care neglect is described in multiple reviews — including advanced stage pressure ulcers and delays in treating wounds that reviewers say created sepsis or infection risks. There are explicit allegations of medical orders not being followed, and some families reported rehospitalizations that they attribute to poor care at the facility.

Facility cleanliness and basic caregiving tasks show striking variability. Several reviewers praise the building as clean, organized, never-smelly, and bright. Conversely, many others report persistent urine odors in hallways, dirty toilets and sinks, bugs, soiled diapers left on patients, bed sheets not changed for over a week, and laundry not completed despite promises. Basic supplies and services such as towels, prompt assistance to bathroom or toileting needs, and timely laundry are frequently cited as failing. These reliability issues are often linked to staffing shortages but sometimes appear to reflect systemic management or process failures.

Dining and nutrition are another consistent pain point. While a few residents enjoyed meals (fried fish noted positively), many reviewers describe food as poor quality — cold, mushy, bland due to diet restrictions, small portions, or items repeated despite allergies (for example, repeated serving of beans despite an allergy). There are reports of high reliance on takeout, incorrect items served compared to posted menus, and requests for basics like coffee or juice not being fulfilled. Some reviewers say meals are so inadequate that families bring extra food. Conversely, a smaller group reports acceptable or even good food experiences and in-house cooked meals.

Administration, communication, and billing present mixed reviews with a worrying number of negative experiences. Some reviewers praised a new administrator who has improved morale and started positive changes. Others describe management as unresponsive or dismissive: long delays or total lack of response to admission inquiries (reports of 17 days with no reply or more than 18 calls), difficulty reaching directors, and unresolved complaints. There are also serious billing allegations, such as charges for days when a patient was not present and charges for therapy sessions not attended. A few reviewers credited reception and office staff by name for helpfulness and good communication.

Activities and social environment are generally positive in many reports, especially where the therapy and activities staff are active: nails, a beautician twice weekly, games, church services, bingo, and puzzles are mentioned. Several reviewers emphasize a bright, uplifting atmosphere with residents laughing and socializing. However, other reviewers state activities are limited and therapy is essentially the only scheduled engagement, which leaves long-term residents with fewer programs.

Patterns and takeaways: the facility delivers excellent rehab care for many short-stay patients, supported by a strong therapy team and some outstanding individual staff. However, persistent and repeated complaints point to systemic issues in nursing coverage, night supervision, medication administration, infection control/wound care, cleanliness, and food service. The variability in experience — from "highly recommended" rehab to "worst place to send loved ones" — suggests how much resident outcomes depend on staffing levels, shift assignments, and which individuals are on duty. Families considering this facility should weigh the strong rehabilitation reputation against reports of safety risks, inconsistent nursing care, cleanliness lapses, and management responsiveness. If placement proceeds, frequent family presence, explicit written care and medication plans, clear documentation of wound and skin checks, and careful financial/billing monitoring are prudent precautions. Finally, several reviewers note improvements under new leadership, indicating the potential for turnaround if staffing and management issues are addressed consistently.

About Royal Park Rehab & Health Center Of Matthews

Royal Park Rehab & Health Center Of Matthews offers a wide range of services for seniors who need different types of care, like short-term rehabilitation after surgery or illness, long-term living for people who need daily help, outpatient therapy, hospice care, palliative care for serious illness, and respite care to give family caregivers a break. The place has 169 certified beds and usually cares for about 133 people every day in both private and semi-private rooms, most with full private baths, in-room refrigerators, flat-screen TVs with complimentary cable, and internet access through free WiFi. The staff, which includes registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and certified nursing assistants, is available around the clock, and there's always a physician overseeing care plans that are tailored to each person's needs and abilities, with a focus on helping people regain skills or keeping them healthy to avoid hospital stays.

People who stay here or come in for therapy use a big 6,500-square-foot gym with special equipment like a car simulator and the Activities of Daily Living Suite, which helps with real-world skills, and the therapy team offers physical, occupational, and speech therapy using equipment like ultrasound and electrical stimulation to help with pain, joints, or muscles. The facility pays attention to other health problems, too, with services like wound care by a wound doctor, cardiopulmonary therapy, fall prevention, incontinence management, IV therapy, podiatry, and psychosocial support, so problems that come up with aging or illness don't go untreated. Medicare, Medicaid, long-term care insurance, private funds, and private health insurance are accepted, and admissions happen seven days a week, even for planned surgeries.

Royal Park has some comforts for both short- and long-term stays, like daily housekeeping and laundry, in-room meals, salon services, scheduled social activities, and shared indoor and outdoor spaces for relaxing or meeting people, with features like a Royal PERK Coffee, Tea, and Hot Chocolate Bar and sun-filled gathering spaces both inside and out. There's also a little extra for safety and convenience, like emergency call systems in rooms and staff trained to manage medications. The health center provides hospice and palliative care for those at the end of life or who need comfort, along with respite care for temporary stays if a family caregiver needs time off.

The building has both a main skilled nursing area and a dedicated rehabilitation unit, keeping different types of care organized. There's a nurse on duty at all times, but the nurse hours per resident are a bit below the state average, and nurse turnover is slightly above the North Carolina average. Inspections by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services show a history of 36 deficiencies, with a few related to infection control and resident rights, but none caused actual harm to residents.

The facility tries to meet each person's real needs whether they require constant care, a place to recover, or just help for a little while. Services like nutritious meals cooked onsite, wellness checks, medication reminders, podiatry, and even scheduled transportation are there to make life a bit easier for the people living here. Administrator Nicola James leads the team, and Royal Park Rehab & Health Center Of Matthews is part of Liberty Senior Living's group, with ownership from Long Term Care Management Services LLC and Liberty Long Term Care, LLC. The approach focuses on both medical treatment and helping everybody feel comfortable and connected, with special support for frail residents who rely heavily on nursing care.
