    Wonderful CNAs, unsafe nursing oversight

I found the CNAs wonderful — attentive and they met my needs. RNs were poor: they ignored concerns, refused to read or validate orders, and a medication dosing error felt unsafe. Rehab/OT and the therapy room were good, though physical therapy was inconsistent. Facility is fairly clean, single-level with small shared/single rooms, no memory care; maintenance and salon available. Staff overall nice and helpful, but nursing oversight needs serious improvement.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans positive regarding non-licensed caregiver support and the physical environment, while raising serious concerns about licensed nursing practices and medication safety. Several reviewers described a generally good experience with helpful, friendly staff and a facility that is fairly clean. The facility is single-level with wings, offers both shared and private rooms, and includes amenities such as an on-site salon and a functioning physical therapy room. Maintenance was noted as good, and occupational therapy services are available. CNAs (certified nursing assistants) received strong praise for their care and attentiveness.

However, a prominent and recurring negative theme involves the quality and behavior of the licensed nursing staff (RNs). Multiple summaries assert that RN care was poor, with specific allegations that RNs ignored concerns and refused to validate or read physician orders. There is at least one mention of a medication dosing issue, which was identified as a potential safety concern. These reports suggest inconsistent adherence to clinical protocols and raise questions about medication administration, nursing communication, and overall clinical oversight.

Therapy and rehabilitation services show mixed impressions. Some reviewers described the rehab as good and noted occupational therapy availability, while others specifically reported that physical therapy was not good. The presence of a physical therapy room is a positive sign, but the differing impressions point to variability in therapist quality, consistency of programming, or outcomes for residents. Prospective residents and families should probe the specific therapy staff, schedules, and measurable rehab goals when assessing fit.

Facility features and daily life aspects are generally positive but include caveats. The single-level layout with wings can be convenient for mobility and navigation, and the availability of both private and shared rooms provides options. At the same time, at least one reviewer commented that the room was small, which may be a consideration for those prioritizing spacious accommodations. The environment was described as "fairly clean," and maintenance staff were praised, indicating that building upkeep is adequate. There was no mention of dining or activities programming in the provided summaries, so no conclusions can be drawn about those areas.

Management and operational patterns implied by the reviews are mixed. The existence of helpful non-licensed staff and good maintenance suggests competency in some operational domains, while allegations about RNs refusing to read or validate orders and medication dosing problems indicate lapses in clinical governance and communication. The facility does not provide memory care, which is an important limitation for families seeking specialized dementia services. Taken together, the reviews point to a center that can deliver solid day-to-day support and some good rehabilitative services, but one where clinical oversight—particularly among licensed nursing staff—and consistency of therapy outcomes may require scrutiny.

In summary, Shoreland Health Care & Retirement appears to offer a comfortable physical environment, attentive CNAs, and useful rehab and therapy infrastructure, but reviewers flagged significant clinical and safety concerns tied to RN performance and medication handling. These are substantive issues that warrant direct questions and verification during tours or admissions discussions (for example: how medication administration is monitored, RN staffing levels and supervision, and examples of how orders are validated and communicated). Families should weigh the strong hands-on care from CNAs and the facility amenities against the reported clinical inconsistencies when making placement decisions.

The rehabilitation program uses a large therapy gym and an Activities of Daily Living Suite, and offers all sorts of therapies like physical, occupational, and speech therapy, along with advanced services like pain management, diathermy, and vital stimulation to help with joint, muscle, or swallowing problems, and if someone's got a wound or needs IV or respiratory care, the facility even got certified by Quality Surgical Management for wound care in 2023, with special attention from their wound care physician. Housekeeping and linen services are handled every day, and there's in-room dining or restaurant-style meals with options to fit special diets-plus, staff will help arrange transportation for doctor visits, daily errands, or local outings. Folks can join group exercise, table games, music therapy, movie dates, and the life enrichment programs, which keep everyone connected, while the personal emergency systems and medication help provide peace of mind for residents and families alike. They make sure folks get the help needed, whether it's incontinence care, fall prevention, geriatric psychiatry, secondary medical conditions, or just a haircut at the on-site salon, and there's opportunities for seniors to volunteer or get involved with social and advocacy programs, as well as insurance guidance, prescription assistance, and veteran resources. People can use the lounges, cable TVs, the therapy gym, and gathering spaces whenever they want, and if someone needs recovery after a hospital stay or ongoing support with Alzheimer's care, the staff works with physicians to build a care plan, always trying to help residents regain skills and keep readmission rates low, treating everyone with dignity and compassion, whether they're here for a short stay or making it their home for the long haul.
