    Outdated rooms, poor staffing, dirty

I lived/visited here and had mixed feelings. The remodeled administration area looks nice, but resident rooms are outdated with old furniture, chipped paint, missing door trim and small shared rooms; bathrooms and bedside commodes were often dirty, call bells unreliable and calls unanswered. Staff and some CNAs were kind and attentive, and activities/front porch with bird feeders are pleasant, but caregivers are clearly overworked, poorly coordinated and leadership communication is weak. Therapy equipment was missing, meals were inconsistent and often cold, and overall upkeep and cleanliness need serious improvement; I wouldn't recommend it until staffing, maintenance and communication are fixed.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is mixed, with clear strengths in personal care and several recurring operational and facility-related concerns. Multiple reviewers praise individual caregivers and CNAs for being friendly, kind, attentive and professional; there are repeated statements that residents received good care from staff members who were compassionate. The administration area has been recently remodeled, and some reviewers report a generally pleasant environment (including a pleasant smell, a front porch with bird feeders, and a program of activities). However, these positive impressions are tempered by significant reports of understaffing, maintenance shortfalls, cleanliness problems, and communication and leadership issues.

Care quality and staffing: Many reviews explicitly say caregivers are caring and attentive, and a number of individual staff members are described as helpful and professional. At the same time, there is a strong recurring theme that staff are chaotic, overworked, and understaffed. That combination produces inconsistent experiences: some residents get good hands-on care, while others encounter unanswered calls, slow responses, or coordination problems between staff and therapy services. Family communication is cited as a problem in multiple summaries, and reviewers also mention leadership conflict that appears to be contributing to disorganization and inconsistent oversight.

Facilities, maintenance and cleanliness: Reviewers note a contrast between the newly remodeled administrative area and the condition of resident rooms. Rooms are frequently described as outdated, with old furniture, chipped paint, and even doors missing wood. Shared rooms are described as small for two occupants and many reviewers express a desire for more home-like decor. Cleanliness reports are mixed — some reviewers found the facility clean and pleasantly scented, but others report dirty rooms, bathrooms not being kept clean, and bad odors. Several reviewers specifically called out equipment and fixtures that are in disrepair, including bedside commodes and call bells, which raises safety and quality-of-care concerns.

Therapy, dining and activities: Therapy offerings appear to be affected by missing equipment, according to the summaries; this can directly impact rehabilitation outcomes. Dining experiences are inconsistent: reviewers reported cold meals and uneven food quality, while others simply said meal service was inconsistent. Activities are mentioned positively by some reviewers (lots of activities available), suggesting that programming exists, but the overall mixed feedback on staffing and coordination could affect residents' consistent access to those activities.

Management, communication and value: Several reviews express frustration with management, noting poor communication with families and apparent leadership conflicts. These administrative issues appear to be linked to the frontline problems (e.g., staffing shortages, unanswered calls, coordination failures). Cost is another theme: some reviewers describe the facility as overpriced and suggest there are better options elsewhere, implying a perceived mismatch between price and quality of services and accommodations.

Patterns and implications: The most consistent pattern across summaries is a split between the quality of individual caregivers (often praised) and systemic issues (staffing, maintenance, cleanliness and management). Positive personal interactions are not reliably matched by reliable facility operations or infrastructure. Safety-related concerns (broken call bells and commodes) and missing therapy equipment are notable because they affect resident well-being directly. If the facility addressed staffing levels and coordination, improved maintenance and cleanliness in resident rooms and bathrooms, repaired safety-critical equipment, and clarified communication and leadership, many of the negative themes would likely be reduced. As it stands, prospective residents and families should weigh the strong reports of compassionate caregivers against recurring reports of operational and environmental shortcomings when considering Hillsville Health & Rehab Center.

About Hillsville Health & Rehab Center

Hillsville Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center sits as a skilled nursing facility with 60 licensed beds, and folks know it for giving both short-term rehab care and long-term nursing options, so whether someone needs help for a little while after surgery or illness, or needs longer support, they've got services in place for all those needs. People can find orthopedic, neurological, cardiac, pulmonary, and wound care here, and there's physical, occupational, and speech therapy offered every day of the week, which helps residents regain independence or just keep up with daily tasks safely, especially with their memory care and personal care programs that address even more detailed needs. The nurses at Hillsville work on individualized treatment plans, and the center pays attention to safety and keeps track of efficiency and patient day measures, which gives an idea of how they run things during the year, though all that means they try to check their performance and keep things running smoothly under the administrator Rhonda Reef. The rooms come in both private and semi-private options, with daily rates, and the services, from skilled nursing to assisted living and rehabilitation care, revolve around the whole patient, making sure folks get support with daily life, get the help they need with therapy to recover skills, or just have help with moving back home when they're ready, and the place is also part of the Saber Healthcare Group, so it's under a bigger organization, and anyone looking for more official details can always find them on www.saberhealth.com. While they do have a web presence linked to Meta platforms like Meta Pay, Meta Quest, and so on, with options for logging in by Facebook or Instagram, the main thing centers on their on-site medical services and how they strive for wellness and compassionate care for everyone living there.
