    Caring, supportive memory care facility

I moved my mom into Country Cottage and couldn't be happier - the smaller, family-like atmosphere and genuinely caring, professional staff made the transition smooth. Meals are excellent, activities plentiful, rooms clean and cozy, and staff are responsive, compassionate, and keep us well informed. When her dementia progressed they helped us transition to memory care and navigate hospice with dignity and support. I am deeply grateful and highly recommend Country Cottage.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive: reviewers repeatedly highlight compassionate, hands-on staff and a family-like, homey environment. The staff are described as caring, respectful, responsive, and communicative; families report frequent updates, quick alarm responses, and visible management. Many accounts note that staff go beyond basic duties — offering emotional support, assisting with end-of-life transitions, helping to coordinate hospice or in-home care, and maintaining close contact with families. This high level of interpersonal attention is one of the facility's most consistently praised strengths.

Care quality and clinical support are portrayed positively. Reviewers cite medication administration, nurse practitioner visits, and immediate assistance when needed. Staff involvement often translates into improved resident wellbeing — several reviewers reported improved mental acuity, increased happiness, and active participation in daily life after moving in. The facility also receives praise for dignified, respectful treatment of residents and for handling sensitive transitions (for example, assisting when dementia progresses and a move to memory care is required).

The physical environment and amenities receive frequent compliments. Many describe the building as beautiful, clean, recently updated, and well-kept, with spacious common areas furnished with TVs and comfortable seating. Specific amenities mentioned include a beauty parlor, bus transportation for outings, phone and cable access, and restaurant-style dining. Housekeeping and laundry services are provided, and grounds are often noted as attractive. Several reviewers liked two-room layouts (separate living room and bedroom, sometimes with a kitchenette), and mention large windows and natural light. At the same time, there is a recurring note that private room sizes are modest — a specific example cited is a 210 sq ft room — and some residents or families found rooms smaller than expected.

Activities and social life are strong selling points. The program includes many options such as chair exercises, Bible study, singing, painting, and other daily activities; reviewers frequently report residents staying busy, making friends, and enjoying these offerings. Transportation and group outings enhance engagement for more mobile residents. Multiple reviewers attribute improved mood and cognitive engagement to active participation in activities.

Dining is another highlighted area: most reviewers praise the food, describing it as excellent, restaurant-style, and enjoyable. There are reports of three meals a day plus snacks and demonstrations (e.g., lunch demos), and many residents express satisfaction with the menu. Isolated complaints about food appear in a few reviews, but they are uncommon relative to positive comments.

Administration and admissions processes generally receive favorable remarks for being professional and well-prepared; several reviewers describe smooth admissions and thorough tours. However, a few families experienced frustration with unclear program details or eligibility assessments (for instance, a prospective resident who did not qualify for assisted living due to mental capacity considerations). That indicates that criteria and communication about eligibility could be clarified for some applicants.

Concerns and patterns to note: Staffing shortages are explicitly mentioned by some reviewers, which could affect consistency of services despite the overall praise for staff. Cost is raised as a concern by a few families who considered the pricing high or “overpriced.” The facility appears to provide assisted living rather than higher-level memory care; a number of reviewers noted that residents with progressing dementia needed to be transitioned to a memory care setting, so prospective residents with advanced cognitive impairment should verify long-term suitability. A small minority of reviewers found the facility less impressive compared with other options, and room size/absence of in-room kitchens were cited as drawbacks by some.

In summary, Country Cottage Decatur is consistently described as a warm, family-oriented assisted living community with compassionate staff, good clinical support, active programming, and appealing common spaces and amenities. It is particularly recommended by families who value personalized attention, frequent communication, and a home-like environment. Prospective residents and families should ask specific questions about room dimensions and configurations, program eligibility criteria, staffing levels, the facility’s ability to handle progressive dementia, and cost/fee structure to ensure it meets their practical needs. Overall, the reviews point to a highly supportive community atmosphere with a few pragmatic considerations around space, cost, and care level for advanced memory needs.
