Paying for assisted living in Alabama

Does Alabama Medicaid's Elderly and Disabled Waiver cover assisted living in Alabama?
Alabama Medicaid does not pay for room and board in an assisted living community, and the state does not have a Medicaid program designed specifically to fund assisted living. However, the Elderly and Disabled (E&D) Waiver — a Home and Community-Based Services waiver run with the Alabama Department of Senior Services — can pay for certain care services that help people who would otherwise need a nursing home remain in a community setting.
Covered services may include:
- Personal care and help with daily activities
- Homemaker and companion services
- Respite care for family caregivers
- Adult day health and case management
To qualify, an applicant generally must be an Alabama resident, meet Medicaid's income and asset limits, and require a nursing-home level of care. You apply through the Alabama Medicaid Agency; a caseworker reviews both financial and medical eligibility.
Does Medicare cover assisted living in Alabama?
No. Medicare does not pay for assisted living room and board or for ongoing custodial care (help with bathing, dressing, and other daily activities), in Alabama or any other state.
