Paying for assisted living in Connecticut
Most Connecticut families pay for assisted living out of pocket at first, usually from a mix of savings, monthly income (such as Social Security or a pension), the proceeds of selling a home, and sometimes long-term care insurance or veterans benefits. Costs vary widely by region and by how much daily care a resident needs. The pricing tables below show current local figures so you can compare communities near you.
Because assisted living combines housing with personal-care services, it helps to think of the bill in two parts: room and board (rent, meals, housekeeping) and the care services layered on top. That distinction matters a lot when you start looking at public programs, which only ever help with the care side.
Does HUSKY Health (Connecticut Medicaid) cover assisted living in Connecticut?
Connecticut Medicaid, known as HUSKY Health, does not pay for assisted living room and board. It can, however, help cover assisted living care services through the Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders (CHCPE), which includes an assisted living benefit delivered by a licensed Assisted Living Services Agency in a managed residential community.
Key points:
- What it covers: personal care, nursing oversight, and similar services — never rent, meals, or facility fees.
- Who qualifies: generally Connecticut residents age 65 or older who are at risk of nursing-home placement and who meet the program's income and asset limits. Limits change yearly, so confirm current figures with the state.
- How to apply: apply through the Department of Social Services online via ConneCT, by phone, by mail, or in person. A care-management assessment determines your level-of-care need.
Does Medicare cover assisted living in Connecticut?
No. Medicare does not pay for assisted living room and board or for long-term custodial care (help with bathing, dressing, and other daily activities) in any state, including Connecticut.
Medicare may still cover related medical needs while someone lives in assisted living, such as:
- Doctor visits and hospital care
- A short, medically necessary stay in a skilled nursing facility after a qualifying hospital stay
- Medicare-covered home health or hospice services, when eligible
