    Compassionate staff helped dad recover

I'm very satisfied with the compassionate, knowledgeable staff and the dependable care my family receives here. Attentive nurses, dedicated caregivers and an excellent PT/rehab team helped my dad walk again; the activities director, social worker and dietitian keep him engaged and well fed. The facility is clean, bright, safety-focused and communicates reliably - it gives us real peace of mind and feels like family.

    Summary of reviews

Sun Mar Nursing Center receives frequent praise for its clinical and rehabilitation strengths. Many families describe effective acute-care interventions and a strong physical-therapy program that supported measurable recovery and mobility gains. Nursing and caregiving staff are often characterized as compassionate and attentive; several reviewers cited low caregiver-to-patient ratios, dependable clinical monitoring, and supportive social work and case-management involvement that provided families with reassurance.

The facility's activities program is a clear strength: an engaged activities director and available worship services contribute to an active, family-like culture. Dietary services and a dietitian-led approach are credited with accommodating individual needs, and administrative staff perform regular check-ins that many families find helpful. The building is frequently described as clean, bright, and generally well maintained, which contributes to a sense of safety and peace of mind among relatives.

At the same time, reviews reveal a set of operational concerns to weigh. There are recurring accounts of inconsistent responsiveness — particularly overnight — and delays in assistance for toileting and transfers that suggest gaps in night staffing or task prioritization. Multiple commenters raised concerns about the tone and conduct of some staff when interacting with residents and families, indicating variability in communication and customer-service practices.

Several reviews point to language-access and cultural-accommodation issues. Some families reported intake and meal policies that emphasize Korean-language processes and menus, which can be experienced as exclusionary by non-Korean-speaking residents or relatives. Administrative and financial transparency is another notable area of concern: reviewers described issues with program fees, refunds, and an affiliated training program that prompted serious allegations of theft and misconduct. Given the severity of those claims, families should request documentation and clarification about third-party programs and financial policies during a tour.

Practical issues include inconsistent meal quality for some residents, parking constraints around the site, and signs of wear-and-tear in particular areas of the facility. There are also mentions of pressure to discharge residents earlier than families expected; prospective residents should review discharge-planning practices and post-acute options.

Overall, Sun Mar appears to deliver effective rehabilitation and many compassionate clinical services, supported by an engaged leadership and active programming. However, the facility shows variability in staff responsiveness, communication tone, language access, and administrative transparency. Prospective residents and their families would benefit from an on-site visit that includes: meeting the therapy and nursing teams, discussing night staffing and toileting/transfer protocols, reviewing dietary options, clarifying financial and third-party program policies in writing, and observing language-access accommodations. These targeted questions can help confirm whether the center’s strengths align with an individual’s needs and mitigate the operational concerns described above.

    About Sun Mar Nursing Center

Sun Mar Nursing Center sits in Anaheim, California, and has 69 beds dedicated to skilled nursing care, with a whole team there around the clock-clinicians, therapists, and medical staff all working together. The center is tied to the PACE program, run in this area by Orange County PACE under Innovative Integrated Health, which means the focus stays on helping frail and underserved seniors, including those with different cultural backgrounds, get the care they need to keep as much independence as possible. The facility has both medical and non-medical help, giving physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and social services to people who need to recover after a hospital stay or regain movement after strokes or accidents.

There's a PACE Center right on site for seniors in the program, aiming to help folks age with dignity while getting both health and human services. Sun Mar does a lot to create a safe place that balances keeping people secure and letting them keep making their own decisions, so families can feel comfortable. For the Korean community, there's a whole specialized unit with Korean-speaking nurses, staff, and a Korean cook making fresh Korean meals, so patients who might feel out of place in other homes can be more at ease and enjoy familiar food and activities. The therapists here have experience working with Korean patients, and the activity programs get changed to match what each resident can do and likes to do, which helps pass the time and keep the mind working.

Staff make a point to connect with each resident, focusing on their own needs and wishes, whether it has to do with daily living, meals, or getting around. Rehabilitation teams build individual programs with the goal of helping seniors gain more independence, and social services help plan discharges when the time comes. Families can tour the center and even set up visits during evenings or weekends, which makes it a bit easier for loved ones to look in on their family member's care. Sun Mar supports a warm, caring environment, and while it's not perfect, staff do their best to make sure everyone feels safe, understood, and respected, with skilled help always nearby.
