    Pleasant assisted living, memory concerns

I toured and chose Foothill Village and overall I'm pleased. The facility is very clean, attractive and homey with spacious private rooms, nice dining/social areas, great patio views, and helpful transportation. Staff were warm, caring and knowledgeable - dining was good (the chocolate cake was excellent) and activities make it lively for active residents. Assisted living felt strong and good value, but memory care appeared understaffed and communication/crisis response was a real concern. Management had a few hiccups (parking, billing/prorating), and some rooms are small, so I'd recommend it for independent/assisted needs but not if you require reliable memory-care support.

    About Foothill Village Senior Living

Foothill Village Senior Living sits at 1400 Foothill Village Drive in Angels Camp, California, and is the only licensed assisted living community in Calaveras County, where residents can choose from independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing. The place opened in 2001 and has provided older adults with a worry-free, social setting since then. Folks can pick from studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, and many units include private bathrooms, private balconies or patios, and storage closets, which is nice for keeping things easy and homey, and some living spaces let residents have pets, so folks can bring their animals along. The community has security measures and updated designs for comfort and safety, and those who need different types of help can move easily between independent, assisted, memory care, and even higher levels of nursing help if their needs change.

Services at Foothill Village include home care, home health, hospice, and support and referral programs. There's a transitional care program called Transitions Neighborhood that helps as residents' needs shift, making it simpler for seniors to get the care and attention they need without having to leave the campus. For people with dementia or Alzheimer's, the specially trained staff in the memory care community use programs designed for support, and the community offers both private and semi-private options in those areas, so there's some choice for how folks want to live.

Residents enjoy amenities like the beauty salon and spa, computer room, library, lounges, courtyards, a private movie theater for screenings, and different dining spaces like the main restaurant-style dining area and Red Bench Dining, plus a deli and a private dining area for special events. The Elevate® culinary program brings California Fresh and homestyle meals, with scratch-made and seasonal dishes, which keeps meals interesting and healthy. The Vibrant Life® program offers different activities, outings, visits to the theater, and community events shaped by residents' habits and interests, so there's a lot to do, and people can make their own schedules and stay in touch with family and friends. Those who live there don't have to worry much about chores, because weekly housekeeping and linen services are included, and the staff helps with daily living needs like bathing, dressing, or managing medicines if that's needed.

Foothill Village is near local shops and restaurants in a comfortable, residential area, and provides both independence and help with things as folks get older. The grounds have community spaces and group rooms for socializing or family visits, and there are multipurpose rooms for activities. The environment supports social interaction, and caring staff help people stay active and connected. Transportation is scheduled for outings or medical appointments. The community helps with funding options, including house sales, insurance, personal assets, and veterans benefits, which can make moving here an affordable alternative to living alone. There's access to VA Aid Assistance and guidance with care planning. The place welcomes guests for short-term respite stays too. With pet-friendly policies, safety features, handicap access, and high-speed internet, Foothill Village tries to make things easy for residents, helping people live as independently as possible for as long as they can, even as care needs change.

Together, Discovery Senior Living has become the largest privately held operator in the U.S., with a portfolio of nearly 35,000 units across 350 communities in almost 40 states, supported by more than 17,000 employees.

ISL's care philosophy centers on fostering dignity and respect for residents while promoting their independence and individuality. Their person-centric approach is exemplified in programs like Generations Memory Care, where individuals are viewed as whole persons first rather than being defined by their conditions. The company delivers meaningful and vibrant life experiences through exceptional amenities, award-winning programs, chef-prepared meals, and expert care. This commitment extends to creating fulfilling work environments for associates, recognizing that employee satisfaction directly impacts resident care quality.

The company's excellence has earned significant recognition, including 19 communities being named among the Best Senior Living Communities for 2024. Under the leadership of President and CEO Collette Gray, who received the 2025 McKnight's Senior Living Women of Distinction Lifetime Achievement Award and was inducted into the McKnight's Women of Distinction Hall of Honor in 2023, ISL has maintained its position as an industry leader. The partnership with Discovery has proven to be a "game changer" for operations, enhancing support services, improving employee retention through enhanced benefits, and allowing both companies to leverage best practices while maintaining their unique cultures and programs.
