    Loving care with minor drawbacks

I'm grateful for the family-run, loving atmosphere - caring staff who go above and beyond, high-quality caregiving in a clean, quiet country setting with a sunroom, patio, home-cooked meals and activities that keep residents content. My mom is happy and well cared for, but I have reservations: occasional odors and untrained pets dent my overall impression.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is predominantly positive, emphasizing a warm, home-like environment with attentive, compassionate caregiving. Multiple reviewers highlight that staff are caring and go above and beyond, with several noting high-quality caregiving and heartfelt gratitude for the level of personal attention provided. The facility’s small, family-run nature is repeatedly cited as a strength: it appears to enable close relationships between staff and residents, individualized attention, and a priority on resident contentment and personal preferences.

Facility and setting are noted positively. Reviewers describe the location as beautiful, quiet, and country-like, with appealing shared spaces such as a sun room and a patio. The property is described as clean and well maintained by some reviewers, and the small scale is framed as contributing to a peaceful, home-like atmosphere rather than an institutional setting. However, the small size also correlates with one of the recurring limitations: a reduced breadth of amenities compared with larger senior living communities.

Dining and activities receive favorable mentions. Home-cooked meals are specifically called out, with at least one reviewer saying their mother was happy with the food. Activities such as crafts, puzzles, and other social programs are available and contribute to residents’ daily engagement. These elements support the impression that the facility focuses on comfort, homeliness, and personalized daily living rather than an extensive array of luxury or medical amenities.

Staffing and management are central themes. The family-run operation and the staff’s close connections to residents are described as creating a loving, respectful environment where individual desires are honored and needs are well provided for. Multiple comments emphasize compassionate care and staff who are willing to go beyond basic duties, reinforcing the view that this is a place where emotional as well as physical needs are addressed.

Notwithstanding the many positives, there are important concerns and at least one strongly negative viewpoint that should be weighed. A reviewer reported a smelly environment and described the pets as untrained, which negatively affected their overall impression. This contrasts with other reviewers who appreciated the presence of pets (cats, dogs, a parrot) for contributing to a homelike atmosphere; the discrepancy suggests variability in pet management and facility cleanliness or odor control. The mention of limited amenities also means the facility may not meet expectations for families seeking more extensive services, activities, or on-site conveniences available at larger communities.

In summary, A TOUCH ABOVE CARE, INC. appears well suited to people who value a small, quiet, country-style, family-run setting where caregivers form close bonds with residents and prioritize individualized, compassionate care. Strengths include attentive staff, home-cooked food, a clean and maintained property (per many reviewers), and modest but meaningful activities and common spaces. Potential residents and families should, however, ask specific questions about pet policies, odor control/cleanliness procedures, and the scope of amenities and services offered, since reviews indicate at least one instance of poor odor and concerns about pet training and an overall negative experience. Those factors could materially affect suitability depending on a prospective resident’s health needs, allergies, or expectations for facilities and services.

About A TOUCH ABOVE CARE, INC.

A TOUCH ABOVE CARE, INC. is a small residential care home located at 5800 Llano Road in Atascadero, California, that's licensed for up to 6 seniors and first opened back in April of 2009, so it's been around awhile and offers a peaceful environment out on 5 acres among oak and pine trees, where you'll find comfortable lounge areas both inside and outside for relaxing, and if someone's a bit more active there's a swimming pool to enjoy and some nice garden spots for anyone who likes to dig in the dirt or just sit outside. The home's purpose built for senior care and offers private or shared rooms that can be furnished with your own things, plus they've got private baths, full tubs, and wheelchair accessible showers, which helps a lot for folks who need those features, and they also let residents bring their cats or dogs, as long as they fit the weight limits, so pets are welcome here, which isn't always the case at places like this.

The staff provides 24-hour awake care, and there's always a caregiver on site with patience and compassion, and they've got over 30 years of combined experience, so they know how to help with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and managing medications for folks who need it, plus they're able to tailor care plans for individuals, which is helpful because everyone's needs are different, and the staff includes home health RNs, LVNs, and CNAs, so there's someone qualified to help with more complex health needs - like diabetic care, incontinence care, disease-specific care like for cancer, and even high acuity care for folks with a lot going on health-wise, and if a resident can't walk, the team can assist with transfers using mechanical lifts if needed. There's also memory care provided in a secured separate building with a wander guard system and special technology, so those with dementia or a history of wandering are protected, and they're able to handle non-ambulatory residents and even people with major behavioral challenges.

Meals are cooked in-house, with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks offered daily, and there are options for kosher and vegetarian diets, which is good if someone has specific meal preferences or restrictions, and there's light housekeeping and laundry included, so those chores are done for you. Activity programs are built around residents' interests and offer group or one-on-one activities, gardening, patio BBQs, and day trips-sometimes heading to the beach or other outings, and the staff encourages social engagement in ways that make sense for each person. The home offers transportation for doctor visits, social outings, or family events, with resident parking available, complimentary rides within reason, and transportation for additional cost if it's further afield, and the property's got easy access to public transit for those who need it.

There's a doctor on call, hospice and respite care available, plus support for veterans' benefits and aides if someone qualifies. The place doesn't take Medicare unless otherwise certified, so that's something to keep in mind when considering payment options. The whole setting feels relaxed, set back from town and surrounded by hills, with plenty of places to sit quietly or visit with friends, and the services aim to help seniors keep as much independence as possible while making sure someone's there any time help is needed, all wrapped up in a homelike, country atmosphere.
