    Nice campus, caring staff, inconsistent

I moved in and overall I'm happy - the campus is beautiful and clean, staff and residents are friendly, there are plenty of activities (exercise, music, games) and the dining/desserts are often very good. Rehab, therapy and on-site care give me peace of mind and the gated grounds feel safe. On the downside food and dining service can be inconsistent, staffing shortages sometimes cause delays with meds/appointments/laundry, and memory-care/communication issues worried us at times. It's pricey and had a rocky start, but for my needs it's been a positive experience and I'd recommend it with those caveats.

    About Brookdale Riverwalk

Brookdale Riverwalk, located at 350 Calloway Drive in Bakersfield, CA, sits on a campus where residents can get independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and at-home care all in one place, which means folks can stay put even as their needs change, and that eases a lot of worry over moving again later on, so you'll find studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments and villas for different needs, and every unit's got emergency call systems, kitchenettes, patios or balconies, plus private rooms and bathrooms for comfort and privacy, with both male and female residents welcome. This place has staff around 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ready to respond if something happens, and nurses handle medical needs, help with medicine, and keep care plans up to date for every person, making sure each resident gets attention that suits them and changes as they age, so people who need help with daily things like bathing, dressing, or getting medicine on time will find it there. Brookdale Riverwalk has been built for safety and independence, making it easier to get around if you're using a walker or wheel- chair and there's both indoor and outdoor common areas, walking paths, a pet park for people who bring pets, and a no-smoking rule indoors, so the air stays cleaner for people who have breathing problems or want a non-smoking community. The community has social and recreational activities, such as outings, a movie theater, card and game rooms, a billiards room, and even a coffee cafe where residents can meet up and chat, plus there's internet and Wi-Fi all over so people can keep in touch with family or browse the web, and people can also use the library, the meditation and worship spaces, and the beauty and barber shop right on site. Meals here come in different styles - there's restaurant-style dining if you want to sit with others, or private dining rooms if you want a quieter space, so that covers families coming to visit too. If you need a ride to appointments or to run errands, there's complimentary transportation, and for those needing rehab, they've got occupational and physical therapy available, and when it comes to memory care, Brookdale Riverwalk has an innovative program with structure and award-winning dining that's gentle and predictable, which can be a relief if you're dealing with dementia or Alzheimer's. People can rent the community room for get-togethers, and there's a courtyard for sitting outside on nice days, while housekeeping and laundry services help keep things neat for everyone, and parking is available for residents who still drive. Brookdale Riverwalk calls itself a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), meaning seniors can move in and have pretty much all levels of support in one campus, so folks don't have to worry about finding a new place as their needs change. Unique names for some areas, signature programs, access to Brookdale Blogs, and a variety of events help people stay busy, and there's a focus on person-centered care so every resident's comfort and dignity are respected day by day.

    About Brookdale

Brookdale Riverwalk is managed by Brookdale.

Brookdale Senior Living Inc. (NYSE: BKD) is the largest senior living operator in the United States, managing over 640 communities with capacity for approximately 59,000 residents across 41 states and employing around 36,000 associates. Founded in 1978 and publicly traded since 2005, Brookdale solidified its market leadership through major acquisitions including American Retirement Corporation (2006) and Emeritus Senior Living (2014), making it the only national full-spectrum senior living company. Headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, Brookdale has topped the American Seniors Housing Association's ASHA 50 list and Argentum's largest providers list for multiple consecutive years.

The company's comprehensive care continuum includes independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). Brookdale's signature Clare Bridge program, developed over 30 years ago by dementia-care experts, provides specialized Alzheimer's and dementia care through two distinct levels: Clare Bridge communities for comprehensive memory support and the Clare Bridge Solace program for advanced-stage dementia residents. The program is recognized by the Alzheimer's Association® for incorporating evidence-based Dementia Care Practice Recommendations and features secure environments, enclosed courtyards, Daily Path programming with six structured activities daily, and the InTouch technology platform offering personalized brain-stimulating games and therapeutic content.

Brookdale's holistic Optimum Life® wellness approach balances six dimensions—Purposeful, Physical, Emotional, Social, Spiritual, and Intellectual—implemented through signature programs including B-Fit (eight exercise class options), Brain Fit (mental fitness workouts), My Life Story (resident storytelling), EngagementPlus (interest-based connections), Growing Together (collaborative learning), and The Ageless Spirit (kindness and gratitude practices). The Embrace Family Partnership provides caregiver education and support for families of memory care residents.

The company's Brookdale HealthPlus® care coordination model, winner of the 2024 Argentum Best of the Best Award placing it among the top 1% of operators, is a technology-enabled healthcare service featuring dedicated RN Care Managers who proactively manage residents' health, coordinate care transitions, and help prevent avoidable hospitalizations. Communities using HealthPlus report 78% fewer urgent care visits, 36% fewer hospitalizations, and 63% more completed annual wellness visits. The Personal Solutions program delivers hygiene products, medications, and daily necessities directly to residents' doors with discreet packaging and monthly billing convenience.

Following a strategic divestiture of its home health and hospice operations to HCA Healthcare (completed December 2023), Brookdale now focuses exclusively on senior living operations while maintaining its position as the industry's largest operator, committed to its mission of enriching lives with compassion, respect, excellence, and integrity.
