    Neglect, theft, poor hygiene, warning

I had a mixed, ultimately alarming experience. Some staff and therapy were kind and the place can be clean and bright, but I also witnessed neglectful care (diapers not changed, meds not given), restricted visits, poor communication and disorganization. I saw unprofessional, sometimes belligerent behavior, an unclean medical environment, withheld personal items/flowers and suspected theft; police and social services were involved and I was told complaints led to sanctions. Because of the safety and hygiene concerns, I strongly do not recommend this facility and would warn others to avoid it.

    Summary review

Overall impression: The reviews present a sharply mixed and largely concerning picture of La Mariposa Nursing & Rehab. While a minority of reports describe positive aspects—particularly in therapy, certain nursing staff, and aspects of the physical facility—many reviews include serious allegations of neglect, abuse, theft, and systemic mismanagement. The volume and severity of the negative reports (including police involvement, investigations, and reported sanctions) weigh heavily against the positive comments and suggest variability in care and oversight across different times, units, or staff shifts.

Care quality: A major and recurring theme is inconsistent or poor clinical care. Multiple reviewers allege neglectful practices such as failing to change diapers, not administering medications, denying assistance for cleaning or hygiene, and confining residents to beds or restricting movement. There are also specific, serious allegations including overdosing and physical abuse or beating. Several accounts note that formal complaints led to investigations and that at least one review states sanctions were imposed and the facility's Medicare license was revoked. These are serious claims and, if accurate, indicate significant lapses in clinical oversight, resident safety, and regulatory compliance.

Staff and management behavior: Descriptions of staff are polarized. Some reviewers praise compassionate therapy staff, describe nurses and aides as kind, and note an on-site administrator and generally helpful personnel. Conversely, many others report unprofessional behavior, belligerent nurses, money-focused staff, and even theft of resident property (including a missing debit card) and withholding of gifts or flowers. Reviews also highlight restricted or limited visitor access and reports that family oversight was necessary—sometimes requiring long travel—to ensure proper care. Admissions and administrative processes are repeatedly described as disorganized, with poor communication, lack of follow-through, and times when no supervisor is available to address concerns.

Facility, cleanliness, dining, and activities: Opinions about the physical environment are inconsistent. Several reviewers state the facility is remarkably clean, smells fresh, and has mostly two-person rooms rather than triples; they also report residents being well fed, with daily socialization and plenty of natural light—comments that suggest a pleasant communal environment in some areas. Contrastingly, other reports describe unclean medical environments (including blood present) and denial of assistance to clean, creating a more depressing atmosphere. Thus, the environment appears to vary by unit or shift, with some parts upheld to good standards and others described as neglected.

Notable patterns and risk indicators: The most alarming patterns are (1) repeated allegations of abuse/overmedication, (2) reports of theft and withholding of personal items/gifts, (3) enforcement or sanction actions noted in reviews, and (4) frequent mentions of restricted visitor access and poor responses to family concerns. Multiple reviewers recommend avoiding the facility, and some explicitly warn others based on their experiences. At the same time, positive reviews about therapy and kindness from certain staff indicate there are competent and caring employees on site, but their efforts may be undermined by systemic problems.

Recommendations based on review patterns: The conflicting nature of reviews suggests significant variability in resident experience. For prospective residents, families, or advocates considering this facility, it would be prudent to verify current regulatory status (sanctions, Medicare certification), request recent inspection reports, and perform frequent, unannounced visits if possible. Ask for concrete information about staffing ratios, medication administration protocols, incident reporting, and visitor policies. If concerns are observed, contact the state long-term care ombudsman or licensing agency and document all incidents. For those with loved ones currently at the facility, maintaining active oversight, clear communication with management, and involving social services or legal authorities when necessary are advisable steps given the serious nature of some allegations.

Bottom line: Reviews contain both genuine positives (notably in therapy, certain caregiving staff, and parts of the physical environment) and multiple, serious negative allegations regarding neglect, abuse, theft, and administrative dysfunction. The frequency and severity of negative reports suggest caution and thorough due diligence before choosing La Mariposa Nursing & Rehab, and proactive monitoring and verification for anyone already receiving care there.
