    Compassionate memory care with drawbacks

I placed my mom here and overall I'm relieved - the staff are compassionate, professional and attentive, the cottage-style memory-care layout feels secure and homey, and medical/hospice needs were handled with dignity. The community is clean, residents seem happy, and meals/activities are generally good (though food quality and portions can be hit-or-miss). Communication was helpful most of the time, but after-hours contact, occasional understaffing/turnover and small rooms/costs were frustrating. I'd recommend it for memory care-especially if family stays involved.

    About Cottages at Riverside

Cottages at Riverside sits in a quiet area and groups residents in six cozy cottages, each holding up to 14 people, which makes the place feel more like a home than a facility, and you'll find big yard spaces where folks can walk about safely since the entire campus is gated and secure, with special bracelets for residents prone to wander so staff always know where everyone is. The setup keeps people with similar needs or memory challenges together, sharing living spaces, dining rooms, laundry, porches, and kitchen areas, so there's a sense of close community, and it lets people find comfort in familiar faces while having their own private rooms with bathrooms, cable TV, and all the basics, which come in both shared and private formats and the fixtures have color contrasts to help with recognition, especially useful for those managing memory loss.

Residents can bring along their cats or dogs if they're able to take care of them, which helps many feel more at home, and the staff keep a close watch round-the-clock, with nurses on site up to 16 hours a day, a doctor on call, and a full-time activities director. The place covers a lot of ground, offering independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, hospice, adult day services, and home care, so folks don't have to move if their needs change. Memory care services cover Alzheimer's, dementia, and behavioral challenges, with secure buildings and activity programs aimed at memory support, while specialized staff help redirect tough behaviors, handle medication like insulin, and use both peaceful routines and engaging activities like music, gardening, art, or even bowling on the Wii.

Meals get cooked fresh with special diets in mind-there's room for diabetic, low sodium, vegetarian, gluten-free, even vegan options-and you can expect home-style dining, snacks any time, and meals set up for guests, too. Residents have access to a big list of shared spaces like a dining hall, wellness rooms, fitness center, gaming space, small library, and plenty of gardens or outdoor porches, and the entire place is wheelchair-accessible with showers and transport help to medical or non-medical appointments. The community puts on regular outings, religious services, pet events, and plenty of brain and body games, always led by the activity director or staff who've had memory care training, and even family members can join in for support groups or activities when they wish.

Many people feel the cottages are bright, clean, and friendly, and with more than a decade's experience, the on-site beautician is another familiar face for long-timers. Housekeeping, laundry, VA aid support, hospice, medication reminders, and all basic needs like bathing, dressing, and transfers, even those needing a mechanical lift, get covered by the team. Staff work all hours, and the facility keeps its licensing up to date with CCLD and RCFE certification, which means it follows state rules for safety and care. The community accepts people with even difficult behaviors if they need a secure place, as well as those wanting to age in place or needing behavioral care, and there's both long and short-term stays, with respite available for families who need a break. All in all, the place offers steady routines, personal care matched to each person's needs, and a warm atmosphere where residents and staff can build trust over time, enjoying hobbies, healthy meals, safe walks, and connections that make daily life a little easier.

The innovative Amara Memory Support program creates welcoming and empowering environments that celebrate the essence of people rather than focusing on their diagnosis. Programming encompasses nine Focus Elements of Life: Recreation, Service, Spirituality, Movement, Sensory, Household Connection, Community, Exploration, and Creative Arts, delivered through stimulating activities including gardening, culinary adventures, musical experiences, creative artistic outlets, and mindfulness practices.

Pacifica offers a comprehensive continuum of care including independent living, assisted living, memory care, respite care, skilled nursing, and adult day care services. All communities focus on promoting well-being by meeting care needs while facilitating social interactions, activities, and wellness programs. Despite recent financial challenges leading to the bankruptcy of one management entity affecting approximately 20 California facilities, the majority of Pacifica's nearly 100 communities continue operating, maintaining their commitment to advancing senior living and providing peace of mind to residents and families through warm, family-like communities where each resident receives individualized attention while maintaining dignity and independence.
