    Compassionate staff filthy unsafe facility

I adored the staff - compassionate, loving and fiercely advocates for residents - they treated people like family. The facility itself is run-down, dirty and smelled terrible (filthy rabbit cages/rabbits were a constant problem), creating a depressing atmosphere. I saw real safety and care concerns: understaffed at times, ignored calls for help, limited activities, and I experienced eviction without notice with belongings (including mobility aids/prosthesis) not returned. Great people, but poor value - I would not trust this place with a loved one.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Apple Ridge Assisted Living is highly mixed, with a pronounced split between strong praise for staff and serious concerns about facility conditions, management, and isolated but alarming incidents. Many reviewers emphasize that the staff can be exceptionally caring, compassionate, and family-like in their treatment of residents; several comments single out the executive director as an advocate and note long-term employees who ensured safety and continuity of care. Positive reports mention friendly, polite, and professional interactions, engaging activities and healthful meals in some cases, a welcoming atmosphere for new residents, and specific instances of clean, well-run parts of the community. A minority of reviewers explicitly call the facility a good value or describe a positive stay or roommate experience.

However, a large number of reviews raise significant and recurring concerns about the physical condition of the community and inconsistent operational standards. Multiple reviewers describe unpleasant odors, filthy areas (including complaints about rabbit cages), and an overall dark or depressing interior. Several comments characterize the property as outdated or run-down and in need of refurbishing and deep cleaning. Cleanliness reports are inconsistent: while some reviewers describe the facility as clean, others report visible filth, cleaning lapses, and staff being occupied in back areas rather than present at the front desk.

Care quality and staffing emerge as a major mixed theme. Numerous reviews praise individual caregivers and teams for being loving, compassionate, and proactive; yet other reports recount understaffing (especially on weekends), activities staff being pulled to perform driving duties, and examples of residents being neglected. There are particularly serious and alarming allegations from multiple reviewers: claims of eviction without notice leaving a person homeless, missing essential belongings (including a prosthesis) and an electric wheelchair not returned, lack of notification about hospital admissions, and instances where cries for help were reportedly ignored because no one was at the front desk. These allegations point to inconsistencies that range from administrative failures and poor communication to potentially dangerous neglect. Such reports are severe and recurrent enough to be a major red flag for prospective residents and families.

Dining and activities receive mixed feedback. Some reviewers praise a healthful menu and a variety of activities; others describe the menu as unimpressive and say there is a lack of engaging programming. A pattern appears where activities exist in principle, but staffing shortages or competing duties (like driving residents) limit execution, resulting in inconsistent engagement levels for residents.

Animal policies and hygiene are another area of sharp divergence. A few reviewers appreciated resident animals and found them to be a positive part of the environment. Conversely, other reviews specifically cite filthy rabbit cages and uncontrolled rabbits, going so far as to note state authorities were contacted. This split suggests uneven implementation of pet/therapy-animal standards and variable perceptions among family members.

Value and neighborhood concerns are also present. Several reviewers consider the facility poor value for money given the condition of the building or the service inconsistencies, while at least one reviewer called it a great value. The neighborhood is described by some as unfavorable, which may factor into impressions of safety or desirability.

Taken together, the reviews portray a facility with notable strengths in staff compassion and individual caregiver dedication, but with serious and recurring operational, cleanliness, safety, and management issues. A dominant pattern is inconsistency: many positive statements about staff and care coexist with troubling reports of neglect, missing belongings, lack of communication, and facility disrepair. Prospective residents and families should weigh the strong praise for individual staff against the severity of the negative incidents and visit the community multiple times, ask detailed questions about staffing levels and emergency procedures, verify policies on pets and belongings, and seek documentation of how past complaints have been addressed before making a placement decision.

    About Apple Ridge Assisted Living

Apple Ridge Assisted Living sits on Annadale Lane in Sacramento and has been around since 2004 as a privately held community with room for up to 36 residents, and the whole place is one story so there's no need to worry about stairs or elevators. There's a big focus on providing assistance for daily needs, so the caring staff can help with things like bathing, getting dressed, taking medicine, eating, and grooming, and they're always there since the building is staffed 24/7. The apartments come in spacious studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom options, and each one usually has wall-to-wall carpeting, kitchenettes, and private baths, letting folks have private or shared rooms depending on their wants and needs. The property itself offers a courtyard with walking paths and landscaped areas where people can enjoy the outdoors, and inside there are common spaces for social activities and relaxing.

The community offers several different types of care, including assisted living, memory care, nursing home stays, independent living, continuing care retirement, and even respite care for those needing short-term recovery after illness or surgery or just a place to stay for a little while. There's a special unit called Expressions where people with Alzheimer's or memory loss get person-centered support, and this area has steady staffing guided by a Licensed Vocational Nurse who's got over 20 years' experience in memory and hospice care. Apple Ridge Assisted Living participates in the Assisted Living Waiver Program (ALWP) and accepts Medi-Cal, which means they can offer help to folks needing financial assistance.

To keep everyone safe, there are security features like an unguarded gate and on-site property management. For health and hygiene, staff follow strong Covid-19 safety rules with daily temperature checks, cleaning of high-touch areas, use of protective gear, and keeping up with health guidelines. The maintenance and management teams live onsite, so help for repairs or emergencies is close by.

Dining means three cooked meals every day, and snacks between, with kitchen staff making menu choices for all dietary needs-meals might include beef and mushrooms, fruit toast and jelly, mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, chicken sandwiches, and more, and there are options for specialty diets too. The rent covers meals, utilities, transportation, and weekly housekeeping. There's a beauty salon, manicure, and spa services with professional beauticians, and people often get haircuts or styling right at the community.

Daily life at Apple Ridge includes all kinds of activities meant to keep residents busy and connected, such as movies, bingo, painting, baking, quilting, travel outings, music, memory games, Bible study, and exercise classes run by fitness trainers. Activities are both social and individual, and there's a Life Enrichment program that adds things like sewing, gardening, art, dancing, and singing. The staff plan schedules for wellness programs including low-impact exercise, strength and balance training, flexibility activities, spiritual gatherings, and religious services.

Doctors, including visiting physicians and foot care specialists, make regular trips to the community so residents don't need to travel for checkups, plus care plans are made for each person based on their needs. The property provides medication management, incontinence care, mobility assistance, bathing help, personal hygiene support, and toileting help. Staff look after safety, especially for memory care residents, and always keep someone on call in case of emergencies, day or night.

Apple Ridge Assisted Living works to keep a friendly and supportive place where people can feel comfortable and have a sense of belonging, and families can tour the facility, even after normal hours, to see the rooms, dining, and activities for themselves before deciding. The main focus here is to give peace of mind, safety, and the right level of care while offering enough options for residents to enjoy daily life and have as much independence as possible.
