    Friendly staff, clean home, thriving

I moved my mom here and I'm very pleased - the staff are friendly, compassionate, and communicative, housekeeping and laundry are excellent, and the place feels clean and homey. Rooms are bright and comfortable, activities and social events keep residents engaged, pets are welcome, and the location is convenient for family visits. Staff made the move easy and my mom is happy and thriving; I would recommend Brookdale Clairemont.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression Reviews of Novellus Clairemont present a mixed but clear pattern: many families and residents express strong satisfaction with the people and daily life, while a distinct set of operational issues recurs across accounts. Strengths most commonly cited include a warm, caring staff, active social programming, appealing communal spaces and an overall home‑like atmosphere. At the same time, reviewers repeatedly raise concerns about staffing consistency, building condition, billing transparency and certain clinical safeguards.

Care quality and staff Numerous comments describe caregiving teams as kind, patient and attentive; housekeeping and laundry are frequently commended, and several families singled out specific staff members and recently improved leaders for positive impact. However, staffing shortfalls were a persistent theme: reviewers describe understaffing at key times (mealtimes, nights), slow buzzer responses and instances where promised caregiver levels were not met. There are also repeated concerns about medication handling (identification, timing with food, and admin procedures) and a smaller but serious set of comments about gaps in clinical oversight, including wound care follow‑up. These items suggest the facility may provide excellent person‑centered attention when fully staffed, but that those outcomes are vulnerable to staffing fluctuations and supervision gaps.

Dining and activities Dining is often highlighted as a strength — many reviewers praise presentation, variety and an engaged kitchen team — and the community runs a broad activities calendar with outings, live music, arts and crafts, and ambassador support that many residents enjoy. That said, some families describe inconsistent meal temperature and limited accommodations for complex dietary needs, and others find activities concentrated in certain times of day or less suitable for more active residents. Prospective families should ask about meal accommodations for medical diets and review a typical weekly activity schedule to ensure a good fit.

Facilities and campus issues Physical assets are a mixture of renovated areas and an older building footprint. Positive notes include bright rooms with patios or balconies, a courtyard and convenient location near healthcare and retail. Offsetting that are recurring infrastructure concerns: small bathrooms, aging finishes, a single elevator that can be unreliable, flooring and paint that need updating, and reports of water intrusion and related maintenance events. Parking is limited and drop‑off/pick‑up areas are described as potentially unsafe or congested. Maintenance responsiveness is described positively by some families but inconsistent by others, indicating variability in day‑to‑day operations.

Management, costs and notable patterns Experiences with administration vary widely. Several reviewers praise specific executive directors and describe improvements after leadership or ownership change; others raise concerns about billing practices, unexpected fees, rent increases and uneven follow‑through on family communication. A small number of serious allegations — including theft, medication errors and clinical failures — appear in the feedback; these warrant direct inquiry during a tour and, where appropriate, review of inspection or complaint records. Overall, there is a noticeable polarization: many families report excellent, reassuring care and a good value, while a subset describe operational and clinical breakdowns that had meaningful consequences.

What to ask and observe on a visit Given the mix of strengths and recurring concerns, prospective residents and families should: ask for current staffing ratios by shift and backup coverage plans; request written medication‑management protocols and examples of how dietary restrictions are handled; confirm recent capital improvements and ongoing renovation schedules; review the fee and rent‑increase policy in writing; tour both renovated and older units; ask about the facility's pest‑control schedule and recent incidents; and observe mealtimes and response times to assistance requests if possible. Doing so will help determine whether the community’s strong points (staff warmth, activities, dining) align with a particular resident’s clinical and safety needs.
