    Lovely campus with outstanding amenities

I toured the campus and was very impressed - lovely, well-maintained grounds with lake and golf-course views, attractive individual casitas with full kitchens, and a warm, responsive staff. Dining was excellent (the chowder was a standout), and the amenities feel five-star: pools, gym, movie theater, salon, art and activity rooms, plus continuum-of-care options. It's a beautiful, safe, active community I'd happily recommend and hope to live in long-term.

    Summary of reviews

Varenna at Fountaingrove is consistently described as a high‑end, well‑appointed retirement community with strong physical assets. The campus, architecture, landscaping and scenic location receive frequent praise; residents and visitors cite luxury amenities such as multiple pools, a full fitness center, spa and salon services, a wine cave, and a variety of indoor amenity spaces including a movie theater, art and hobby studios, library and business center. Private residences often include full kitchens, and the property is positioned as a continuum‑of‑care community offering independent living through memory care.

Staff and care receive mixed but generally positive commentary. Many accounts highlight professional, personable and attentive employees, individualized one‑on‑one attention, and skilled assisted‑living and memory‑care teams. The community’s event and hospitality teams are noted for strong event planning and execution. That said, a pattern of concerns appears around responsiveness and continuity: reviewers describe variability in response times to call requests and inconsistency in day‑to‑day care delivery. In addition, several reviewers raised serious concerns about crisis response and oversight, specifically citing failures in evacuation planning and execution during an emergency and gaps in communication and investigatory transparency following that event.

Dining and programming are clear strengths for many residents: gourmet, restaurant‑style meals, multiple dining venues, special culinary events and an active activities schedule earn repeated praise. However, dining quality is not uniformly consistent for all residents—some express dissatisfaction with meals—and activity engagement varies depending on resident interests; some find the offerings highly engaging while others find them less stimulating.

Management and financial matters present a mixed picture. Professional management and maintenance of the built environment are often mentioned positively, but there are notable concerns about pricing, perceived value, and billing transparency. The reviews include serious allegations connected to financial and investigatory conduct; prospective families should treat those claims as issues warranting direct inquiry and documentation. There is also a perception among some reviewers that corporate and financial priorities can influence operational decisions.

Bottom line: Varenna at Fountaingrove offers a strong physical environment, a broad menu of amenities, and many examples of attentive, personable staff and robust programming. Prospective residents and families should balance those strengths against reported variability in routine responsiveness, occasional inconsistency in meal quality and activities fit, and significant concerns about emergency preparedness and financial transparency. Recommended due diligence items include asking for written evacuation and crisis‑response plans, recent staffing and call‑response metrics, sample billing statements and contract terms, and opportunities to observe daily dining and activities firsthand.

Varenna at Fountaingrove sits at 1401 Fountaingrove Parkway in Santa Rosa, California, with a campus that has water frontage and landscaped walking paths, so you can sit by the fountain or stroll with a view. The staff includes registered nurses such as Constancia Bosha and a dining room manager named Irma Policarpio, so there's attention to care and dining details every day. The community offers a mix of independent living, assisted living, memory care, nursing home, and continuing care retirement community services, so people with different needs can find support, whether they need a little help or more constant care, and the care plans remain flexible and personalized for each person. You'll also see a program director who plans activities, classes, day trips, and off-site excursions, taking resident suggestions seriously. Transportation for outings or medical appointments, on-site banking, card and game rooms, a residents lounge, and communal spaces bring extra convenience, with options for long-term and short-term stays. The campus holds between 11 and 50 employees, keeps a 4.2 rating from reviews, and is focused on providing care for people with few or many health needs.
