    Compassionate caregivers but facility problems

I appreciated the compassionate, hardworking caregivers and the very clean, organized facility-meals, daily baths and basic care were excellent and staff often went above and beyond. That said, the building and furnishings felt outdated or shabby, rooms were sometimes unfurnished or had missing items, activities were limited, and there's no formal memory-care program. Management and communication were inconsistent - director departures, staff turnover, slow issue resolution, privacy/HIPAA concerns, rude admissions, and disruptive roommates were real problems. With high fees (including a non-refundable admin charge) and multiple moves that cost us about $4k, I can't recommend it for my mother despite the wonderful caregivers.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but centers heavily on the quality and compassion of direct caregivers versus recurring management, communication, and facility issues. Many reviewers praise the staff — describing them as friendly, compassionate, attentive, well-groomed and loyal — and credit caregivers with delivering dignified, respectful care. Multiple accounts highlight cleanliness and organization: rooms described as a good size, freshly repainted at move-in, and the facility repeatedly called very clean. Several families report feeling welcome by staff and management, and describe an environment that provides peace of mind and consistent daily care such as baths and good meals. Some reviewers explicitly recommend the community and note that management and staff were interactive and responsive, resolving issues quickly when they arose.

However, a substantial and recurring set of concerns undermines that positive picture. Leadership instability and turnover — notably a director’s departure that apparently was not disclosed to residents and families — appears to have caused anxiety and a perceived drop in consistency. Poor communication and inconsistent follow-through are repeatedly mentioned: some complaints were slow to be resolved, items went missing from rooms and were delayed in laundry, and other procedural expectations were not always met. Several reviewers describe management problems or mismanagement, with at least one family reporting multiple moves within six months and a financial loss (reported as $4,000) tied to the move-out process and a non-refundable administrative fee that felt like an unfair or undisclosed charge.

Roommate and privacy issues are a notable and specific concern. Reports include loud, disruptive roommates and use of filthy language that upset other residents and families, and at least one instance where that led to a parent being moved out. There are also mentions of privacy/HIPAA concerns and instances of rude admissions staff or other personnel, which contrasts sharply with the many comments praising the caregiving team. Physical accommodations draw mixed reviews: while many note clean, well-sized rooms and pleasant decor, others call out shabby or tired furnishings, and multiple reviewers point out that rooms may be unfurnished despite the price point, requiring families to bring furniture and beds.

Activities and programming appear adequate but limited. Reviewers mention bingo, karaoke, occasional concerts and daily activities, but several families would like more variety and engagement beyond television and basic events. Memory care is an inconsistent theme: a few reviews describe a dementia-friendly environment and attentive dementia care, while another explicitly notes that memory care services were not mentioned. This suggests either variability in offerings or inconsistent communication about the scope of memory-care programming.

Financial transparency and value are mixed. Some residents and families feel they receive good value for money and are very pleased — praising meals, cleanliness, and staff support. Others feel the community is overpriced, point to non-refundable fees and financial loss from relocations, and note unexpected charges. Taken together, the pattern is one of strong frontline caregiving and a clean, welcoming environment frequently undermined by management instability, communication gaps, occasional rudeness, roommate placement problems, and inconsistent amenities (furnishings and activity variety). Prospective residents and families should weigh the consistently high marks for caregiver compassion and facility cleanliness against the documented risks around leadership turnover, communication, roommate placement, fees, and activity breadth. If considering this community, ask direct questions about leadership stability, roommate policies and screening, detailed fee structures (including refund policies), memory care services, and examples of current activity calendars to confirm they match your priorities.

About Oakwood Memory and Senior Care/IN NACM-

Oakwood Memory and Senior Care, also called IN NACM, gives seniors a safe place to live, and they help people with memory loss like Alzheimer's and dementia, so when you walk in, you'll see both outdoor and indoor common areas, bright trees, stone paths, a water fountain, and a courtyard that's enclosed for safety, and the staff there speaks Filipino, Spanish, and English, which helps a lot of folks feel at home. The community's focused on memory care, so it uses things like Wander Guard bracelets to keep people from wandering off, and if someone has big behavior changes or gets confused, there's a dedicated part of the building to handle that, and staff can handle aggression or odd behavior too, so families don't have to worry as much. Oakwood has wheelchair accessible showers and bath tubs, and you can find rooms in private, semi-private, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom styles, and they even let folks bring cats or dogs if they're not too big, about twenty-one to thirty pounds.

The whole place is locked down for security, and they use alarms and computers to alert staff if someone tries to leave, and staff works all hours-twenty-four hours a day-and a doctor's always on call, plus visiting nurses, therapists, dentists, and podiatrists come in regularly. The folks who work here won awards for being friendly and kind, and the community picked up trophies for having the best activities, which includes field trips, swimming in the pool, walking paths both inside and out, and on-site beauty salon services, plus you can go to religious services both on and off the property. They serve chef-prepared meals, which can be kosher or vegetarian if needed, and residents can smoke, but only outdoors and in private areas. Oakwood offers assisted living for people who need help bathing, dressing, taking medicine, and with diabetes care, but the aides don't inject insulin, they just help monitor it, and staff manages incontinence care and gives extra support for people who need light, medium, or heavy care, even using mechanical lifts if needed.

Seniors who prefer independence can also live here and only get as much help as they want, so if someone likes to stay active without worrying about chores, they can do that, too, and those staying short term for respite are welcome. There's organized outings, a full-time activity director, and events to keep people active, social, and engaged, whether they're in assisted living, memory care, or skilled nursing, and Oakwood can handle wound care, rehabilitation, and offers help after a hospital stay as part of its services. The buildings have parking for residents, and staff arranges transportation if you need it, though there's a cost for those trips. They even have safety features like medication dispensers, home security, medical alert systems with reviews from brands like Bay Alarm Medical and Medical Guardian, and if residents need caregiver support, that's available, too, with rooms set up to help with wheelchair access and safety.

Rooms cost about $3,200 per month for a semi-private space, and there are extra fees depending on care needs, respite stays, and for joining the community, but the price covers a lot because Oakwood is one of the few places around with small board and care homes for folks who like quiet, and bigger apartment-style living options for those who want some company. The grounds have roses and trees, and Oakwood supports both on-site and off-site devotional activities for those who want them, with support for hearing aids and technology like cell phones and specialized internet plans for seniors.

Oakwood Memory and Senior Care/IN NACM has been recognized with awards for care, friendly staff, and activities, and it stands out as a place where safety and personal attention come first, and where folks can move through different levels of support without having to leave the community they know.
