    Attentive staff, clean facility, recommended

I'm very pleased with this facility - the nurses and CNAs are superb and attentive, staff are warm and treat residents like family, the place is consistently clean and odor-free, meals are good (with feeding help when needed), and rehab plus proactive communication keep me confident in care. The building is a bit dated and there are occasional staff/cleaning delays, but overall I highly recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Extended Care Hospital of Westminster are overwhelmingly positive with many families and residents praising the facility’s compassionate staff, strong clinical care, cleanliness, and positive rehabilitation outcomes. A clear majority of reviewers emphasize that nurses and CNAs demonstrate kindness, attentiveness, and family-oriented care; several singled out specific staff (including the director of nursing and a charge nurse named Maggie) as particularly helpful. Many reviewers describe the facility as homey and small, which contributes to a sense of individualized attention and strong staff-to-patient relationships. Multiple accounts cite measurable clinical improvements (weight gain, increased mobility, successful rehab) and recommend the facility based on these outcomes.

Care quality and clinical themes: Clinical care is frequently described as “excellent” or “superb.” Reviewers report thorough nursing oversight, proactive medication explanations, regular weight and status monitoring, and therapists who contributed to meaningful functional gains. Dementia care expertise is repeatedly mentioned; families note staff are experienced with cognitive impairment and provide sensitive, patient-centered approaches. Several reviews recount personal attention from CNAs (for example bringing small items or personal touches) and consistent feeding assistance, which for some residents led to improved nutrition and mood. While most clinical feedback is positive, there are isolated but serious concerns in a minority of reviews about overmedication and care decisions that led to distrust during longer stays.

Staff, communication, and family engagement: Communication with families is a prominent strength. Many reviewers praise proactive phone updates, timely status reports, social services involvement, and staff who thoroughly explain medications and care plans. The facility’s social worker and administrative staff are noted as helpful with paperwork, insurance, and discharge planning. The overall tone is that staff keep families informed and involved. However, there are recurrent comments about variability — some reviewers report excellent, frequent contact while others experienced lapses in shift-to-shift communication, missed follow-up calls, or inconsistent handoffs between nursing shifts. A few reviews mention staff being on phones or seeming disengaged, which contrasts with the majority positive reports.

Cleanliness, environment, and facilities: Cleanliness is a dominant positive: many reviews explicitly say the facility is very clean, floors are mopped, and there is no urine smell. The environment is described as comfortable, quiet, and organized. That said, a subset of reviews noted occasional cleanliness lapses, dining room messiness, or a mild odor problem. Several reviewers described the physical plant as older or outdated, even though it is kept clean; this suggests the facility’s appearance may not match the newest buildings but housekeeping standards are generally strong.

Dining and nutrition: Dining is frequently highlighted as a strength — reviewers mention good daily meals, snacks, a capable chef, and balanced menus. The ability for family to dine with residents was appreciated. Still, there are several specific critiques: some residents found meals less enjoyable due to chewing difficulties, pureed menus, carb-heavy or bland options, and limited substitution choices for dietary needs. A few reviewers wanted more variety or accommodations for individual tastes. Overall, food quality is generally rated good to excellent but there are opportunities to expand menu flexibility and special-diet options.

Rehabilitation and activities: Rehab services receive positive commentary for daily therapy and measurable improvements in strength and mobility. The activities department is described as very good, offering engaging programs and holiday events that contribute to residents’ emotional well-being. The facility’s approach to activities and social engagement is consistent with its family-like culture and is a frequently cited contributor to residents laughing, smiling, and appearing happier.

Management, policies, and notable concerns: While most administrative interactions are favorable — with helpful directors and staff assisting with forms and discharge — there are some significant concerns raised by a small number of reviewers. These include allegations of billing overcharges or policy deviations (monthly versus daily rate issues), a reported privacy/HIPAA breach (including a Facebook posting), an unauthorized chart note or meeting, and a serious allegation involving a head nurse making a threatening statement. These incidents appear to be isolated but are serious and were repeated enough to merit attention. They contrast sharply with the many positive reports about transparent medication discussions and proactive social services, indicating some inconsistency in management or training around privacy, documentation, and billing practices.

Patterns, contradictions, and recommendations: The dominant pattern is strong, compassionate direct care delivered in a clean, small facility with effective rehab and good meals. Positive experiences cluster around attentive nursing, helpful CNAs, personalized rooms, and strong family communication. The main contradictions arise from variability — some families experience gaps in communication, occasional lapses in cleanliness, or engagement issues during certain shifts. The most serious outlier issues are the privacy and billing allegations and the one report of overmedication and a threatening comment; although isolated, these warrant administrative review.

Conclusion: Extended Care Hospital of Westminster receives high marks from the majority of reviewers for clinical care, staff kindness, cleanliness, therapy outcomes, and family engagement. For prospective families, strengths include dementia expertise, proactive communication, good food, and a warm atmosphere. However, prospective residents and families should also ask specific questions during intake: how the facility handles privacy and social media policies, billing and rate structure, staff handoff procedures between shifts, individualized nutrition plans, and how they address hydration and mobilization protocols. Addressing these areas would help reduce the variability reported by some families and further solidify the facility’s generally strong reputation.
