    Outstanding rehab, unacceptable long-term care

I had excellent rehab - top-notch PT/aqua therapy, knowledgeable, caring therapists and a beautiful, convenient facility where my family felt welcome and I made real progress. But my long-term care experience was inconsistent and sometimes alarming: ignored food sensitivities and advance directives, mishandled UTIs/incontinence, poor COVID care, rude or unresponsive staff, spotty cleanliness, and confusing insurance/communication. I'd happily use their outpatient/therapy services again, but I would not trust them for extended nursing care.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment is mixed but strongly polarized: many reviewers praise Westview Health Care Center for outstanding rehabilitation — especially physical therapy and aquatic therapy — while a significant minority report serious lapses in communication, staff behavior, and certain aspects of clinical care. The dominant positive thread across reviews is the quality of therapy services. Multiple reviewers specifically called out top-notch PT teams, knowledgeable therapists, and exceptional aquatic therapy (including a rehab pool with a built-in treadmill). Several named clinicians (John, Kayla, Lynn Kennedy, Nicole) and departments (Sports Medicine, outpatient aquatic PT) received glowing, specific praise. These accounts describe individualized one-on-one therapy, tailored programming, rapid pain relief, successful functional outcomes, and accelerated recovery that allowed patients to return home and resume daily activities. The facility’s gym and equipment are repeatedly described as superbly equipped, and reviewers frequently mention thorough doctor reviews and clear explanations of care plans.

Facility and amenity feedback is largely positive: reviewers note a clean, modern, and pleasant environment with large comfortable rooms, updated lighting, and contemporary equipment. The center offers family-friendly spaces and a welcoming waiting room, with many families reporting that staff go above and beyond. Activities and dining are recurring positives — reviewers mention many activities, take-out nights, and generally nutritious food — and some emphasize the facility’s strong reputation and convenient location near family. Several accounts highlight long-tenured, caring staff and a warm, supportive atmosphere, including compassionate end-of-life care and skilled outpatient services.

However, these strengths are counterbalanced by consistent reports of variability and problematic experiences that raise safety and quality concerns. A notable cluster of reviews describe poor communication — unreturned calls, lack of family updates after critical events such as strokes, and failures to notify physicians. Staffing problems are reported (shortages, unresponsiveness, inaccessible call buttons), and multiple reviewers recount rude or unsympathetic staff interactions. Some reviewers explicitly report that staff ignored patients’ legal directives or wishes, treated grieving family members poorly, or displayed a lack of accountability. These accounts suggest that while many staff are excellent, the experience can depend heavily on which employees are on duty.

Clinical and safety issues appear in several serious complaints. A few reviewers described inadequate rehab services (absence of occupational therapy, no walker assistance) and premature discharges that preceded falls and return to rehab. There are reports of persistent urinary tract infections with difficulty obtaining urine samples due to incontinence, and at least one reviewer described food sensitivities being ignored. Some families felt the facility was focused on admissions/occupancy rather than individualized patient best interest, and several described care as deplorable during the COVID-19 period. Administrative frustrations also appear: poor communication about insurance, billing stress, and at least one note that Medicaid was not accepted or payment was insufficient.

Taken together, the pattern is one of excellence in rehabilitation and therapy services for many patients, paired with inconsistent experiences in nursing, communication, and administrative areas. The facility earns high marks for clinical therapists, equipment, and many care outcomes, but some families experienced serious lapses that affected safety and trust. Prospective residents and families should weigh the strong therapy reputation and modern facilities against reports of variability in bedside manner, communication responsiveness, and certain clinical processes. It would be prudent to ask specific, practical questions upfront — for example, about occupational therapy availability, staffing levels for the unit, communication protocols with families and physicians, infection-control practices, and how the facility handles legal directives and discharge planning — to help gauge whether a given stay is likely to align with the positive experiences many reviewers describe.

    About Westview Health Care Center

Westview Health Care Center in Dayville, Connecticut, has stood behind tall white pines since 1954 and offers skilled nursing care along with both short-term and long-term rehabilitation for up to 103 residents each day, including a separate 18-bed Subacute Rehabilitation Unit, and the place is known for its elegant but comfortable design, formal dining room with a baby grand piano, private and semi-private rooms, and a courtyard with gardens that people enjoy sitting in, and while the grounds and common areas are tidy and quiet, there's also plenty of therapy, recreation, and social activities for those who want them. The center is nonprofit and brings together over 76 staff, including more than twenty physicians, a Nurse Practitioner on site, and therapists who offer physical, occupational, massage, aquatic, and speech therapy, both as outpatients and inpatients, seven days a week, with services supporting everything from post-surgery recovery to adolescent and overuse injury programs, and even specialized care for dementia and hospice, which makes it possible to find help for many different needs all under one roof. You'll find the outpatient therapy and Aquatic Center open by appointment throughout the week, while the Sports Medicine Department handles more active injuries with modern equipment, and there's a focus on workers' compensation with ergonomic training and injury prevention, so businesses in the area lean on Westview for occupational health services, assessments, and quick evaluations.

The staff practices comprehensive programs meant to improve patient safety and reduce injuries among both residents and employees, but it's worth noting the facility's recent inspection history, which includes 29 noted deficiencies, two infection-related deficiencies, a deficiency for not maintaining proper infection control, another for not following standards in nutrition and food sources, and a serious citation related to the quality of care for residents with mental or psychosocial needs, rated at an immediate jeopardy level, and these are important things for families to review, as they speak to areas where the facility must continue making improvements. The nurse staffing level is just below the state average, at 3.70 nurse hours per resident per day, and the nurse turnover rate is higher than typical, coming in at 41.3% compared to the 38.9% state average, which can sometimes affect consistency in care, although the facility does have a high overall staff-to-resident ratio. Residents have the option of formal dining with diverse menus, and in addition to the therapy and wellness programs, there's pet therapy, social opportunities, and tastefully furnished gathering spaces, so people can enjoy plenty of relaxed time or choose to stay busy and engaged as they like.

The center keeps a reputation for high-quality rehabilitation, holding a "Five Star" designation and repeated state and national recognition as a top rehabilitation provider for many years, with specialized programs for musculoskeletal disorders, foot and ankle care, overuse injuries, speech and swallowing rehabilitation, and same-day outpatient appointments when needed, all supported by a team that includes administrative specialists like Christine Zadora and many experienced caregivers. Westview's mission focuses on helping people reach their best physical and mental potential, and while it certainly delivers a broad range of therapies and amenities, like a scenic courtyard and rooms that feel more like home and less like a hospital, it's clear the facility still faces challenges around infection controls, food safety, and mental health support, as regulators have noted. The location is convenient to Worcester, Hartford, and Providence, making it easy for families to visit, and the grounds give a touch of peace and privacy that many find appealing during a stay that could be either brief or long.
