    Modern community, excellent staff, expensive

I toured this modern, very clean community and was genuinely impressed - the staff are fantastic: friendly, attentive, learn residents' names, and provide competent, caring support. The dining is excellent (delicious food, nice dining room, even private dinners), and my apartment had a full kitchen, but some units are small or semi-private. Downsides: the campus feels large and sprawling with limited amenities, many residents are elderly/wheelchair-bound, and the cost is high (about $14,000/month). Overall great staff and care, but not the right fit for me.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews for Cedar Mountain Commons is predominantly positive, centered on the facility's cleanliness, modern appearance, strong dining program, and the professionalism and warmth of much of the staff. Multiple reviewers emphasize that the building is clean, attractive, modern and well-kept; the dining room is repeatedly described as very nice and the food as very good or delicious. The facility also receives praise for its environment and community: reviewers mention a cheery, warm atmosphere, an enriching community culture, and staff who learn residents' names, spend extra time with residents, and provide timely communication. The community has a smooth move-in experience according to reviewers and is noted as being highly rated on Medicare.gov, which reinforces perceptions of clinical competence and overall quality of care.

Care and staffing are a recurring strength in the reviews, though not without nuance. Many comments highlight caring, attentive, and professional staff who show dignity and loving support. Specific strengths called out include competent care, timely communication, and staff engagement in residents' lives (learning names, inviting guests for private dinners). At the same time, a minority of reviewers reported colder interactions from some nurses, indicating variability in bedside manner across staff. Several reviews also indicate that the population tends to be quite elderly, with many residents in their 80s and 90s and some confined to wheelchairs; this suggests the community provides higher-acuity care, which may appeal to families seeking skilled support but may feel like a mismatch for more active older adults.

Facilities and living arrangements are generally seen as modern and attractive, with some apartments offering full kitchens. However, reviewers note trade-offs: some units are semi-private or relatively small, and a few described the campus as too big or sprawling. Amenities were flagged as limited by some reviewers, and activity programming drew mixed feedback — while the community runs social options like bingo and card games, a few reviewers said the programming was not what they were seeking. This points to a pattern where the physical facility and dining receive consistently strong marks, while lifestyle and amenity expectations vary by prospective resident.

Cost and fit are clear considerations. The monthly fee reported in one review is high (around $14,000), and several comments imply that the level of care/resident mix and available programming might justify the price for those who need more clinical support but may not for those looking for a more resort-like or activity-rich experience. Prospective residents should weigh the strong staff engagement, cleanliness, and dining quality against the facility size, potential semi-private accommodations, the older and higher-acuity resident population, and the programs available. The community's high Medicare rating and many positive remarks about dignity and competent care suggest it is a solid choice for those who prioritize clinical reliability and attentive staff; for those seeking extensive amenities, more active programming, or more intimate smaller-community feel, Cedar Mountain Commons may feel less well matched.

In summary, reviews portray Cedar Mountain Commons as a modern, very clean, and well-run facility with excellent food and many compassionate staff, suitable particularly for residents who require reliable clinical support and appreciate a warm, engaged caregiving culture. Key caveats for prospective residents are the relatively high cost, some semi-private or small apartment options, a resident population skewed toward older and less mobile individuals, and occasional variability in nursing warmth and program offerings. Visitors or prospective residents should verify room types and privacy options, review current amenity and activity calendars to ensure fit, and speak directly with care staff to assess whether the community’s programming and staff approach align with their preferences and needs.

    About Cedar Mountain Commons

Cedar Mountain Commons sits on the Newington campus and offers both independent and assisted living in a not-for-profit senior community run by Hartford Hospital and Jefferson House, which makes it a bit unique since not many places are supported by a hospital this way around here, so you've got a service-rich environment with a focus on keeping your independence as much as possible, with trained staff who help you if you need things like medication monitoring and bathing, but otherwise let you live life the way you're used to, and if you want your own space there are studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments to choose from with plenty of maintenance services taken care of like plumbing, appliances, trash, snow, lawn and landscaping, so you're not doing all the chores you used to, and the housekeeping's handled, too. There's a dining service with fine meals, and a full calendar of social, cultural, and wellness activities, including GoodLife Fitness classes which are aimed at adult wellness and exercise. Residents get transportation and security around the clock, so there's peace of mind if anything comes up, and if something does go wrong, there's always staff available 24 hours a day and emergency call systems in every unit.

There's specialized Alzheimer's and dementia care programs in the assisted living area, with support for those who need more memory help, and the Center for Healthy Aging is there for seniors and family members who want advice or assessments. Short-stay respite care, adult day programs, and short-term rehabilitation are available, so sometimes folks come just for a short time to recover from a surgery or injury, or to give caregivers a break. Long-term care options are there, too, though skilled and intermediate care as you'd get in a nursing home isn't listed, but there are still a lot of health and support services due to the Hartford Healthcare connection, including things like social work, spiritual care, and access to care centers for cancer, musculoskeletal health, and others, with lots of different specialists available through the hospital system if you need them, so you'll always have medical resources nearby.

The whole place is run by a big team of about 330 employees and 95 volunteers where people take quality seriously and try their best to care for you like family, and the monthly fee covers most everything so there aren't a lot of extra bills popping up. All the activities and the care aim to keep everyone engaged and as independent as they want, whether that's going to the classes, attending events, or just enjoying the privacy of their apartment. There's a handy video tour online and floor plans to look at before you decide, and there's also a list of FAQs for folks to review if anything's not clear. Cedar Mountain Commons keeps the focus simple: meet you where you are, help you keep enjoying life, and make sure you've got support when you need it, without making things complicated.
