    Beautiful waterfront, but unacceptable care

I was drawn to the beautiful waterfront grounds, spotless rooms and excellent, home-cooked meals, but my experience soured. Chronic understaffing, almost no activities, poor supervision and instances of neglect - ignored pain, rude/mocking and gossipy staff - made my father's care unacceptable. We ended up moving him to a nursing home for proper personal care. Beautiful on the surface, but do thorough research - I can't recommend it for a loved one.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews for Seacrest Assisted Living & Memory Care is highly mixed, with a pronounced polarization between reviewers who praise the facility and those who report troubling care and safety issues. Many reviewers highlight outstanding physical attributes: a waterfront location with ocean views, serene neighborhood and beautiful grounds, large and clean rooms that can be personalized with residents’ own furniture, and an orderly, well-maintained interior including a spotless kitchen. Multiple reviewers emphasize that the facility feels like home, is odor-free, and shows attention to cleanliness and presentation.

Dining is consistently cited as a strength. Numerous reviewers praise excellent, home-cooked meals and a talented chef; food quality and mealtime experience are recurring positives. Several reviewers also note on-site nursing availability and doctor visits as conveniences that add to perceived value. Cost and location are described as affordable and attractive by some families, and a number of reviewers state they would recommend Seacrest or felt fortunate to live or work there.

Staff-related comments are the most polarized and constitute the clearest pattern in the reviews. On the positive side, many reviewers single out staff for being friendly, kind, compassionate, and attentive; they describe staff who go above and beyond, treat residents with dignity and respect, and create a family-like environment. Specific staff members are praised by name (for example, Alexandria Delbuono and Tracy), and some reviewers call the team “amazing,” noting an atmosphere where residents are groomed, well fed, and happy. Several reviews also describe strong recreation leadership, laughter and social connection, and a workplace where staff enjoy working.

Counterbalancing those positives are multiple serious negative reports: understaffing, poor supervision, and instances of neglect or inadequate care. Several reviewers describe being ignored about pain or personal care needs, bedtime oversight lapses, and even allegations that staff mocked or gossiped about residents. A handful of reviews recount severe safety and hygiene concerns — fights, blood on the premises, or ultimately moving a loved one to a nursing home for more individualized attention. There are also reports that residents were relocated to less desirable rooms for financial reasons, and at least one reviewer described discriminatory and unprofessional language directed at or about transgender staff. These negative accounts suggest uneven standards of care and significant variability depending on staff on duty and management practices.

Activities and engagement appear inconsistent. Some reviewers praise the recreation director and an active program with lots of laughter and good activities; others complain that programming is minimal (for example, only a movie night) and that residents are bored and unhappy. This disparity again points to inconsistent resident experience: some households benefit from robust social programming while others find offerings lacking.

Management and communication issues surface in several reviews. Families report dismissive or rude communication when seeking help or information; some reviewers were upset about staff turnover or the facility’s handling of valued employees (e.g., moving a well-regarded staff member out). Others explicitly warn prospective families to research thoroughly before deciding, indicating that outward appearance and excellent grounds/food can mask problems in caregiving quality.

In summary, Seacrest presents a clear set of strengths—attractive waterfront location, well-maintained facility, strong dining program, and multiple reports of warm, dedicated staff that create a homey atmosphere. However, there is a substantial minority of reviews describing understaffing, lapses in supervision and personal care, allegations of mistreatment or neglect, safety incidents, poor communication, and inconsistent activities. The overall picture is one of significant variability in resident experience: many families are very satisfied, while others have had serious, even distressing experiences. Prospective residents and families should weigh the facility’s attractive amenities and praised staff against the reports of inconsistent care, and should perform targeted due diligence (in-person visits at different times of day, specific questions about staffing ratios, supervision at night, activity schedules, turnover, incident reporting, and references from current families) before making a placement decision.

About Seacrest Assisted Living & Memory Care

Seacrest Assisted Living & Memory Care sits in West Haven, Connecticut, right on Long Island Sound, and folks have been coming here since 1985 for help with assisted living and memory care needs in a medium-sized, three-story building. The facility handles different levels of care, like Memory Care and Assisted Living, and wraps all the costs for support, meals, and services into a single fee. Residents get help with daily activities, including bathing, dressing, and managing medicines, and there's always someone around because staff offer 24-hour supervision and keep trained memory care specialists on hand for those with Alzheimer's or dementia, making sure of security with features like a wander guard system.

Care plans get built for each person with input from families, and staff try to make life easier and more comfortable by offering things like incontinence care, support for special diets, dining assistance with scratch-made cuisine, and plenty of activities throughout the day. There are devotional services, parties, entertainment, happy hours, social programs, cognitive support groups, and outings arranged by a team of long-serving staff, and there's a strong focus on making it feel like a friendly home, with many staff having worked there for decades and being considered almost family by guests.

Seacrest allows pets and lets residents choose private rooms, plus the building has been recently renovated, with bright, comfortable interiors, and views of Long Island Sound out the windows, and folks can walk the well-kept grounds to enjoy the scenery. Meals offer healthy, farm-to-table fare and special menus for those in memory care, prepared from scratch and including fine pastries and desserts. Transportation is available, and there are housekeeping, laundry, and complimentary parking services that come as part of the package, helping keep life easy. The community scores well for care and environment based on family feedback and includes hospice and respite Staycation programs for temporary stays, so family caregivers can take short breaks while knowing their loved ones have supervision, social events, and health needs covered.

Residents can expect personalized care, plenty to do, and a safe, engaging environment at a starting monthly cost of $4,950, which is lower than the area average. Activities and social programs help keep life active and meaningful, and the facility tries to keep both memory care and assisted living residents involved together when possible, based on ability. Seacrest's all-inclusive service and specialized memory care help promote independence where possible, while staff work closely with residents and families to focus on comfort, choice, and well-being in a place with a long history of caring for seniors.
