    Gorgeous community with caring staff

I'm very pleased overall - the Veranda Club is gorgeous and recently renovated with bright, spacious apartments, terraces, a pool and lots of amenities. Staff were the highlight: professional, caring and attentive (special thanks to Louis and Jackie) and they made the transition easy; residents are friendly and activities plentiful. Dining is hit-or-miss - often good but sometimes average or slow - and I've seen reports of management/maintenance issues (communications, billing, outages, occasional cleanliness concerns) and noticeable rent increases. I'd recommend touring and asking pointed questions about billing, staffing and dining before committing.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews of Veranda Club show a predominantly positive impression among many residents and families, with repeated praise for the staff, recent renovations, campus setting, and the breadth of amenities and activities. However, the overall picture is mixed rather than uniformly positive: a notable minority of reviewers report serious operational problems, inconsistent care, sanitation concerns, and administrative frustrations. Taken together, the reviews suggest Veranda Club is a largely appealing option for independent living—especially for those who value a newly renovated, amenity-rich environment and an active social calendar—while prospective residents and families should do careful due diligence on assisted-living specifics, staffing levels, and management responsiveness before committing.

Staff and care quality: The single most consistent strength cited across reviews is the caregiving staff and front-line employees. Many reviewers describe staff as kind, compassionate, personable, and attentive; named individuals (Jackie Crawford, Louis/Louis Kaminow, Tom, Iris, Maria and others) are repeatedly singled out for exemplary responsiveness, patience, and help with transitions. Several accounts describe hands-on nursing that checks residents multiple times per day and contributes to improved health and medication management. At the same time, there are multiple, strong countervailing reports describing understaffing, inexperienced or inadequately trained aides, inconsistent nursing availability, missed medications, and high turnover. This creates a split impression: families who experience stable staffing report excellent, family-like care; others faced with staff shortages or administrative lapses describe worrying care gaps. For those needing assisted living or significant medical oversight, reviews suggest verifying up-to-date staffing ratios, nurse availability, and escalation procedures.

Facilities and renovations: The campus, its location, and renovations are regularly praised. Many reviewers value the lakefront setting, walking paths, pool, screened terraces, and newly remodeled apartments. Renovation activity is a recurring theme—most contemporary comments are positive, calling the property ‘‘new,’’ ‘‘immaculate,’’ and ‘‘hotel-like.’’ However, several reviewers describe ongoing construction-related disruption (noise, unfinished amenities, temporary relocations), layout problems in certain floor plans (small showers, awkward door placement), and uneven updates between independent and assisted living wings. Prospective residents who prioritize move-in immediacy or require fully completed amenities should clarify renovation timelines and inspect the specific unit type they will occupy.

Dining and food service: Dining receives both praise and criticism. Numerous reviewers enjoy the restaurant-style dining—chefs who can tailor meals, healthy menu options, themed dinners (for example Jewish dinners), and social dining experiences are cited as major positives. Conversely, some reviewers complain about inconsistent quality, limited menu choices (particularly breakfast), slow or understaffed dining service, frozen meals or Styrofoam delivery in isolated negative accounts, and occasions of kitchen understaffing. The takeaway is that dining experiences appear variable by day, dining room, and management of kitchen staffing; if food quality is a primary concern, prospective residents should sample meals at different times and ask about kitchen staffing levels.

Activities and social life: Activity programming is often highlighted as a strength: live music, lectures, exercise classes, Happy Hour, casino trips, library access, nature walks, religious services, and various social events are frequently mentioned and create a sociable environment. Many report a vibrant independent-living community with residents quickly making friends. Yet some reviewers note low engagement in certain areas or wings, limited programming for assisted living, or that the community can feel quiet or inactive depending on resident makeup. Thus, activity quality appears strong overall but may depend on the specific building/wing and the resident demographic; ask about participation rates and sample activity calendars.

Management, communication, and administration: Reviews show polarizing experiences with management. Several reviewers praise visible, responsive leadership and describe clear, comforting communication, particularly praising the sales and executive teams who assist with transitions. Others report administrative problems: slow business office responses, inaccurate billing, unexpected supplemental charges, poor family communication in crises (e.g., hospital transfers, power outages), and in a few reviews, serious allegations of negligence or unethical behavior. Given these mixed accounts, families should request written disclosure of what is and is not included in fees, escalation paths for concerns, and references from current residents and families.

Cleanliness, maintenance, and safety: Many reviews describe the property as very clean, well-kept, and safe—housekeeping receives positive mentions and grounds are described as beautifully maintained. Conversely, a minority of reviews allege severe sanitation problems (rodents, mold, stained carpets) and slow or inadequate maintenance responses. Maintenance responsiveness is inconsistent in the feedback: some report rapid fixes and helpful maintenance staff, while others recount extended delays for repairs. These contradictory reports indicate the importance of an in-person inspection of cleanliness in both public spaces and typical apartments, and direct questions about pest control and maintenance response times.

Value, pricing, and contract clarity: Price perceptions vary. Several reviewers feel the community offers reasonable value for an all-inclusive model with utilities and housekeeping; some are comfortable with the rates and appreciate transparency. However, others cite extra fees (to-go meal charges, occupancy surcharges), rapid rent increases, and overall value concerns. Prospective residents should request a full breakdown of fees, historical fee increase examples, and written policies on ancillary charges.

Assisted living and memory care considerations: The community’s capability to ‘‘age in place’’ is showcased by many reviewers who felt reassured by the integrated model and smooth transitions between independent and assisted living. Several families praised nursing check-ins and memory-care-friendly safety features. Nevertheless, there are also reports warning that assisted living can be less updated, more lightly staffed, and have fewer interactive activities; some reviewers explicitly caution that Veranda Club may not be well-suited for residents with high medical needs or around-the-clock nursing expectations. If a move involves assisted living or memory care, verify staffing levels, 24/7 nursing availability (if required), and observe the assisted wing in person.

Notable patterns and recommendations: The reviews point to two dominant patterns. First, when the staff is stable and leadership accessible, residents and families describe excellent outcomes: happier residents, improved health, rich social engagement, and a supportive, family-like atmosphere. Second, when administrative or staffing problems surface—especially during renovation periods—the experience can deteriorate quickly, producing strong negative reactions that include serious allegations of unclean conditions or mismanagement. For prospective residents: (1) schedule multiple tours at different times (including meal service and evening activities); (2) meet nursing leadership and ask about nurse coverage and turnover; (3) sample meals; (4) request a written fee schedule and recent history of fee increases; (5) inspect the specific apartment type you will take and the assisted-living wing if relevant; and (6) ask for references from current residents and families.

Bottom line: Veranda Club offers many strengths—compassionate front-line staff, strong sales/transition support, attractive renovations and amenities, active programming, and a pleasant campus setting—that make it a compelling choice for many independent-living seniors. However, experiences are mixed around administration, assisted-care reliability, dining consistency, maintenance, and isolated but serious sanitation allegations. A careful, in-person evaluation focused on the specific wing/unit, staffing commitments, and full cost transparency will help families determine whether the community’s strong positives will be consistent and durable for their particular needs.
