    Caring staff but billing concerns

I appreciate the genuinely loving, professional nursing and caregiving staff - they kept my loved one safe, engaged with activities (music, bingo, movies, patio) and handled COVID care well. The facility is clean, homey, and offers good therapy, dining and on-site services. That said, I ran into billing errors and harassment from the billing department, saw frequent staff turnover and inconsistent aides (missed care, medication issues), and heard reports of theft and occasional pest/cleanliness problems. It's somewhat pricey but many staff go above and beyond; I recommend it cautiously-confirm billing practices and staffing stability before committing.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment about The Colony Club Sunrise is strongly mixed, with many families and residents offering high praise for staff, environment, and activities, while a significant minority report serious problems with care consistency, management, and cleanliness. The dominant positive themes are compassionate, hands-on caregivers and administrators, a welcoming and family-like culture, and a facility that in many accounts is clean, secure, and well-appointed. Multiple reviews single out individual staff by name for excellent, responsive care and leadership. Several reviewers emphasize an intimate, small-community feel, good nurse-to-resident ratios, attractive common spaces (large TV/theater room, multiple social rooms, and a pleasant outdoor patio), and onsite services such as therapy, salon, and transportation. Activities are highlighted repeatedly: bingo, arts and crafts, music, live entertainment, church services, movies, and special events are commonly cited as strengths that help residents stay engaged. Many reviews also note that meals are delicious and well-presented, with room service and family-style dining in some cases. Medicaid acceptance, affordability for some, and daily housekeeping are additional practical positives mentioned by reviewers.

However, reviewers also frequently report serious and recurring concerns. The most alarming pattern in the negative feedback centers on inconsistent care quality and staffing instability. Several reviews describe frequent staff turnover, resulting in inconsistent performance, lack of ownership by staff, and in extreme cases allegations of neglect, mishandled medications, abuse, or theft of residents' items. Medication misdistribution and failed medication management appear in multiple summaries and are tied to reports of hospital transfers and worsening medical outcomes for some residents. Aides are sometimes described as unavailable or inattentive, with concrete examples such as delayed response to a wet bed or missed meals and weight loss in particular cases. These incidents create a significant risk signal for residents with higher medical or memory-care needs.

Management and ownership present a mixed picture. Many reviewers praise on-site administrators, executive directors, and admissions staff for being compassionate, accessible, and responsive — resolving issues promptly and personally assisting families. Conversely, several reviews describe an ownership change and subsequent shift toward more profit-driven decision-making, staffing cuts, billing errors, and even alleged harassment from the billing department. This divergence suggests there may have been a change over time or inconsistent management practices across units or shifts. The reviews also reflect strong polarization in staff interactions: while many families report warm, respectful care delivered on a first-name basis, others recount rude front desk staff, language barriers, racial bias, or unhelpful responses from certain employees.

Facility and amenities are similarly mixed but lean positive in the majority of accounts. Numerous reviewers report a clean, well-cared-for environment with impressive interiors, roomy apartments or private rooms, and multiple communal areas that feel home-like rather than institutional. Onsite therapy, memory-program offerings, salon, and transportation are frequently appreciated. At the same time, a notable minority report serious sanitation concerns including sightings of roaches, pervasive urine odors, and general filth — issues that, if accurate, could indicate localized problems or lapses in housekeeping and pest control. Room sizes receive mixed feedback as well, with some noting large two-bedroom apartments and others describing small or bare-bones rooms.

Dining and activities show clear variability. Many reviewers praise excellent, enjoyable meals and flexible dining options; others describe bland or overcooked food and unfriendly dining staff. Activities receive praise for variety and frequency in many reviews (daily bingo, crafts, music, outings, and special events), but several reviews say activity offerings are sparse or declining. This inconsistency again points to uneven implementation across staff teams or shifts.

Recommendation guidance based on these reviews should emphasize the mixed nature of experiences. For prospective residents and families, the facility appears to offer an attractive, secure, and activity-rich environment with many instances of excellent, compassionate care and responsive management. However, there are recurrent and serious complaints about medication management, staffing instability, occasional neglect or mistreatment, billing problems, and sanitation lapses. These issues suggest careful due diligence is warranted: ask about current staffing ratios and turnover rates, medication administration protocols, recent pest-control records and housekeeping audits, incident/complaint logs, how ownership changes have affected operations, and specific measures management has taken to address prior issues. If a prospective resident requires consistent, higher-level medical oversight or is at high risk in memory care, families should probe thoroughly and consider whether experiences reported here (both positive and negative) align with the level of reliability required.
