    Caring staff, great food, caveats

I moved my grandmother here and overall I'm pleased - staff are caring and responsive (even when she was very sick), meals are excellent, the place is clean and well-landscaped, and activities (bingo, arts & crafts, family nights and outings) kept her engaged and making friends. Apartments are affordable (we liked the two-bedroom with garage) and it's close to the hospital, but the dining room is far from some living areas, the facility could use some modernization, and I had a privacy concern when staff opened mail. Most staff were friendly and helpful, though I personally witnessed a staff member yell at residents and felt some concerns were brushed off; I recommend it with those caveats.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is predominantly positive. Many reviewers emphasize a warm, family-oriented atmosphere where residents are cared for by friendly, helpful staff. Cleanliness is repeatedly noted: individual rooms, common areas, and the grounds are described as tidy and well-maintained. The facility is small and hands-on, which many families and residents appreciate because it creates a personal, home-like environment. Several reviewers explicitly state they felt safe, well-cared-for, and would recommend the facility.

Staff quality is one of the strongest positive themes: reviewers use words like compassionate, attentive, caring, and responsive to describe caregivers. Multiple comments praise staff hospitality and their ability to answer questions and address concerns, and families say the staff put them at ease. That said, there are notable and serious negative comments about specific staff behavior and management. One reviewer alleges verbal abuse by a staff member (identified by name), and another names a manager/staff member who is perceived as siding with employees and being quick to discharge a resident. These are isolated but significant complaints and represent a clear pattern to watch: most feedback about staff is very favorable, but a few reports raise concerns about mistreatment and about how management handles complaints and difficult situations.

Facilities and location are generally praised. The property is described as clean and well-landscaped, with an appealing outdoor garden area that some residents would like to be closer to. Proximity to a hospital is repeatedly mentioned as a practical advantage for emergencies. A recurring logistical criticism is the facility layout: at least one reviewer noted that certain living areas (or an apartment) are too far from the dining room, which reduced convenience and enjoyment of the outdoor/garden spaces. Several reviewers recommend updates or modernization, indicating parts of the facility could benefit from investment or renovations.

Dining and activities are clear strengths. Meals receive consistent praise — characterized as top-notch or home-cooked — and the dining area and food quality are regularly commended. The activity program is robust and varied, with specific mentions of bingo, arts and crafts, shopping trips, restaurant outings, family nights, and holiday events. Reviewers cite active social programming as a key reason residents make friends, stay engaged, and have a positive daily experience.

Medical management and affordability are additional positive threads. One review highlights well-kept medical lists and accurate prescriptions, which speaks to reliable medication management and attention to clinical details. Several families emphasize that the facility is affordable and offers good value for the level of care provided. However, one reviewer suggested care could be improved for a very sick resident, implying that while routine care is good, very high-acuity needs may be more challenging to meet.

In summary, Academy Assisted Living Facility appears to excel at creating a caring, clean, and activity-rich environment with strong, friendly staff, good meals, and an advantageous location near a hospital. The most frequent criticisms relate to a few serious personnel and management concerns (including alleged verbal abuse and poor responses to family complaints), a mail privacy issue, some physical layout inconveniences, and a need for modernization in parts of the facility. For families considering this facility, the overall picture is positive but it would be prudent to inquire directly about staff training and supervision, complaint-resolution procedures, how the facility manages higher-acuity medical needs, privacy policies (including mail handling), and to tour the specific apartment locations relative to dining and garden areas to ensure the layout meets your needs.

    About Academy Assisted Living Facility

Academy Assisted Living Facility sits three blocks north of Lawnwood Hospital right on the corner of Soltman Avenue and Birch, and the building's all on one floor, so you don't have to worry about stairs, and you've got private or semi-private rooms to pick from, depending on what you want or need, and folks here still get to keep their independence but always have help close by when needed, whether it's getting out of bed or help with bathing or dressing, so you've got kind and trained staff available 24 hours a day, and there's a good emergency call system set up for quick help. You'll see they've got things like medication management, supervised medication reminders, and they can help people with insulin monitoring or folks with memory issues or even dementia. Laundry and housekeeping are handled, and there's even dry cleaning if you need it, so you don't have to fuss with chores, and meals-three times a day-come home-cooked and checked over by a licensed dietitian, with options for diabetes or allergies, so almost everyone can find something to eat and there's shared dining spaces or private apartments if you want more alone time. There's a big TV and lots of movies, game nights, cards, group exercise, and plenty of social programs to keep you busy, and there are always activities like bingo and arts or chats in the garden or sitting on one of the screened porches, which are comfortable and open for fresh air. You can get your hair done in the beauty salon or by the barber, and there are devotional services offsite if you want them, and you've got outdoor walking paths too. If you need to go to the store, a doctor's appointment, or go out for events, there's courtesy transportation, and they've got parking spaces for those who drive or have visitors, so that makes it easier for friends and family to come by. Common areas are comfortable and clean, there's a community or arts room, and you can always find someone to talk to if you want company, and staff help set up activities for health, exercise, and socializing, which really keeps life interesting. Academy offers different options for those who need help during the day but don't need full nursing care, and for those needing extra supervised care for memory issues, and there's always clear information about the facility in AHCA reports and provider pages that you can check. The place takes fair housing seriously and tries to provide a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, and residents' safety's a priority with around-the-clock staff, emergency plans in place, and coordination with medical providers, and any legal information's available if you want to check it in the required reports, which is good for peace of mind. All in all, Academy Assisted Living Facility tries to make daily life comfortable and safe, with services and amenities that fit the needs of its residents, while supporting as much independence as possible.
