    Excellent care, family-style, some issues

I moved my mom here and overall I'm very pleased. The staff are amazing-friendly, knowledgeable and responsive-care is excellent (memory-care team especially attentive) and communication/hospital notifications are prompt. The facility is clean, bright and feels like a small, family-style village with abundant activities, outings and very good, made-from-scratch meals; admin was helpful with Medicaid/insurance. Drawbacks: it's pricey, older in spots with occasional odors in the memory unit and intermittent staffing/communication hiccups, but the care and peace of mind have been worth it for us.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews for Hawthorne Inn of Lakeland is predominantly positive, with frequent and emphatic praise for the staff, cleanliness, dining, and activity programming. A clear majority of reviewers emphasize the facility’s caring, personable, and professional caregivers, describing staff as affectionate, knowledgeable, and responsive. Many families report feeling confident in the care their loved ones receive, noting timely medical communications, regular safety checks (including two-hour checks in memory care), and an on-call doctor. Multiple reviewers specifically highlight strong dementia and memory care training, and several mention that transitions between assisted living and memory care are handled smoothly.

The facility’s small, village-like layout and ‘‘Town Square’’ concept is repeatedly cited as a strength: reviewers describe a warm, family-like atmosphere with bright, airy public spaces and active common areas. The facility is praised for being well-maintained and spotless in many areas; numerous accounts describe colorful, inviting décor and an overall immaculate presentation. Amenities such as an on-site salon, fitness room, ice cream parlor, transportation services, and larger apartments with kitchenettes are noted positively. Proximity to a large clinic/hospital is seen as beneficial for health care access.

Dining and activities are prominent positive themes. Many reviews mention homemade-style meals, a variety of menu options including desserts, and staff willing to customize meals or accommodate special diets. The activity program is described as abundant and diverse — bingo, arts and crafts, music and group activities, outings and shopping trips, family nights, educational events, and special programs such as gardening and arts therapy feature in multiple accounts. Reviewers frequently report that residents are engaged, that the weekly/monthly activity calendars are full, and that recreation staff are welcoming and energetic.

Despite these strengths, several recurring concerns appear across the review set that prospective residents and families should weigh. Cost is a common issue: multiple reviewers call the community expensive and express concerns about affordability under Medicaid, with some questioning long-term cost value. Operational inconsistencies are another theme—some reviewers report staff turnover, short staffing, and absence of weekend administrative staff, and a few detail instances of poor communication, quick discharges, or perceived management inaction. While many praise staff, a minority describe rude or unhelpful interactions with specific employees or administrators.

Facility condition and comfort show mixed feedback. Although many reviewers praise the bright, well-kept appearance and cite excellent AHCA survey results, others call parts of the facility dated, noting worn carpet, paint needing updates, or older furniture in some rooms. A few reviewers specifically mentioned isolated odors in the memory care unit, and there are scattered reports of toileting/shower-assistance issues (wet clothes in hampers, toilet cleanliness) that point to occasional lapses in personal-care detail. Outdoor options are limited according to several reviewers — the site lacks dedicated walking paths, and the broader location is described as not very walkable to restaurants, though it is near medical services.

In sum, most reviewers convey strong satisfaction with Hawthorne Inn of Lakeland’s caregiving, cleanliness, dining, programming, and the small, community-oriented environment. However, there is a non-trivial minority of reviews citing cost concerns, intermittent staffing/management problems, and localized facility maintenance or cleanliness issues. These mixed reports suggest consistent strengths around culture, activities, and memory-care competence, combined with occasional operational and physical maintenance weaknesses. Prospective residents and families would benefit from an in-person tour that includes questions about current staffing ratios and turnover, Medicaid/insurance specifics, any recent remedial actions for the memory unit odor reports, and a review of outdoor access and room condition to ensure their priorities align with the facility’s current performance.

About Hawthorne Inn of Lakeland (Assisted Living and Memory Care)

Hawthorne Inn of Lakeland gives seniors assisted living and memory care in a single-storey building south of downtown Lakeland, Florida, which has a homelike neighborhood feel, and inside they've set up places like the Town Square Restaurant, Nick's Sweet Shoppe, Susie's Beauty Salon, and a community library open all day and night, and they've thought about small comforts like having cable TV, high-speed internet, washers and dryers, and an emergency call system in every suite, which can be either a studio or a one-bedroom. The building is licensed by the state of Florida (lic. #9877) for up to 68 residents and keeps strict caregiver-to-senior ratios to meet health and safety standards, and everything from sprinkler systems to wheelchair and handicap accessibility, as well as 24-hour supervision, shows care toward safety and peace of mind. They welcome residents who need help with daily things like dressing, toileting, or medication, but also serve those with Alzheimer's or dementia in secure areas with staff trained in memory support, using a variety of programs and activities tailored for folks with cognitive needs. Residents also get occupational therapy, nursing, wound care, podiatry, and medication help, plus support for hospice or respite care, and for those with pets, the community allows them too. There's a schedule for outings and a regular activities calendar that covers arts and crafts, educational programs, and fitness, so people stay busy and connected, with transportation to doctor visits and shops like Starbucks or Applebee's available, and nearby parks with walking paths give opportunities for fresh air right outside, while churches and health clinics are close if needed. Housekeeping and laundry services, kitchenettes in apartments, and community or personalized dining mean most daily chores or meals are made simpler and residents get to choose their routines as much as possible. Nursing home services in both private and semi-private rooms are available, and insurance, including long-term care, is accepted. The staff is on site 24/7, and the place aims to give each person the right balance of independence, support, and a sense of community, and folks can always take a virtual tour or look at the floor plans to see if the space fits their needs.
