    Excellent rehab, staffing and dining

I placed my mom here for six weeks of rehab and found the nurses and therapists outstanding - attentive, professional, and the facility clean and welcoming. However, chronic understaffing, heavy use of temp CNAs, overworked/occasionally rude aides, supply shortages and slow-to-repair lifts have diminished care and created safety concerns. The food was consistently terrible and unhealthy, and I encountered mixed staff quality and some unprofessional behavior despite helpful administration. I'm grateful for the excellent nursing and rehab team, but staffing, oversight and dining need serious improvement - great in parts, not perfect.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is mixed, with a substantial number of strong positive experiences centered on clinical staff and the rehabilitation program, but also multiple, recurring operational and quality concerns. Many reviewers singled out nurses, RNs, and physical therapists as attentive, professional, and compassionate; these clinicians are credited with providing excellent post-operative rehab and long-term personal care. The rehab wing receives consistent praise and several reviewers described the staff as going above and beyond, listening to residents, and creating a family-like atmosphere. Administrative and admissions staff are also noted as helpful and informative during tours and transitions.

At the same time, there is a clear and recurring pattern of staffing problems that affects day-to-day care. Reviews frequently mention understaffing, high turnover, and a reliance on temporary agency CNAs. While some CNAs are described as caring and attentive, others are characterized as inattentive, rude, or inconsistent; this mixed CNA quality appears to contribute to reports of neglect and reduced oversight of medications and personal care. Multiple reviewers explicitly state that CNAs feel overworked, that there are too few staff on shifts, and that care has diminished since the facility changed ownership.

Facility and amenity feedback is generally positive on cleanliness and modernity: many reviewers call the building clean, odorless, and comfortable, and praise amenities such as private TVs, free WiFi, laundry service, comfortable recliners, and an outdoor gated sun area. However, this praise is not uniform across the entire campus—some wings are described as updated and attractive while others are outdated or crowded, and several reviewers noted crowded hallways or inconsistent conditions between wings.

Dining and activities present a clear split in experiences. A number of reviewers enjoyed meals and cited good food, but an even larger set of comments complained that the food is horrible, unhealthy, and so poor that family members brought food from home. Activities are considered adequate by many, with regular bingo and daily programming noted, but dining remains a frequent source of dissatisfaction.

Operational and safety concerns appear across several reviews and merit attention. Reported supply shortages, limited availability of Hoyer lifts, and slow repair times for essential equipment were cited as factors that impeded safe and timely care. Some reviewers raised serious allegations about patient safety, medication oversight, and staff misconduct, including inappropriate social media posts — issues that families described as reasons to withdraw a loved one from the facility. Communication problems such as nonworking phone lines were also mentioned.

Management and responsiveness elicit mixed reactions: while some families found administration helpful and informative, others described resistance to feedback and difficulty getting problems resolved. Several reviewers specifically stated that care quality has declined since the facility was sold, suggesting organizational changes may have affected staffing and service levels.

In summary, Okeechobee Health Care Facility demonstrates notable strengths in clinical nursing, rehabilitation services, cleanliness in many areas, and a welcoming, family-oriented culture among many staff members. These positives are offset by persistent operational issues—most prominently understaffing, variable CNA quality, dining complaints, equipment and supply problems, and occasional lapses in professional conduct and safety. Prospective residents and families should weigh the facility's strong rehab and nursing capabilities and clean, modern amenities against the recurring reports of understaffing and inconsistent care quality. For current management, the most urgent areas to address based on reviewer feedback are staffing stability (especially CNA recruitment and retention), dining quality, timely maintenance of lifting equipment and supplies, improved communication systems, and firmer oversight to prevent unprofessional conduct and ensure consistent medication and personal care practices.
