    Caring staff, but safety concerns

I appreciate the caring, often 24/7 staff, home-like rooms, meals and activities that can bring peace of mind. But I also saw medication errors, overwhelmed staff, messy/old areas, wandering residents and safety/cleanliness problems that concern me. Administration felt disorganized and at times dismissive (scheduling/tour issues, long move notice, language policy), and care quality seemed inconsistent. The price felt high for what's offered, so despite wonderful frontline staff, I can't confidently recommend this place.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment about Paradise Care Cottage is mixed, with strong praise from multiple reviewers about the compassion and attentiveness of specific staff members balanced against multiple, recurring operational and safety concerns. Positive reviews consistently highlight caring, friendly staff and 24/7 nursing presence, clean and comfortable private apartments for some residents, a home-like and peaceful atmosphere, and programming such as music and activities. Several reviewers explicitly stated they feel the facility provides high-quality care and peace of mind, noting staff who go above and beyond, pleasant dining for three meals a day, and administrators who meet seniors' needs.

At the same time, there are many substantive negative reports that raise caution. The most frequent issues reported are staffing shortages and staff who appear overwhelmed; reviewers describe not enough staff available to meet residents' needs and situations where medical needs were not promptly addressed. Safety and supervision are recurring concerns: multiple summaries report residents roaming in and out of the building, lack of control over wandering, and a general sense that the facility lacks adequate measures to keep residents safely contained. Relatedly, medication management problems are mentioned explicitly (medication errors), which compounds the safety concerns.

Cleanliness and facility condition are divided. Some reviewers praise very clean apartments and quality rooms, while others describe the facility as messy, not clean, and having an overpowering smell. The building is characterized as older and small by several reviewers, and some say the overall environment feels more like a nursing home than an assisted living community, with limited items or activities for residents. These divergent reports suggest inconsistency across rooms, units, or shifts rather than a uniform condition.

Administrative and policy issues are another clear pattern. Several reviewers reported problems with admissions screening and management, flagged a negative tone from the administrator in at least one account, and noted logistical issues such as scheduling difficulties (no staff to meet visitors at times, no Saturday tours) and a 45-day move notice policy. One reviewer reported an English-only policy for dealing with people, which could indicate communication or inclusivity concerns for non-English speakers. Price was also mentioned as being high by some reviewers, though there is at least one report that price was lowered for a resident.

Taken together, the reviews paint a picture of a facility with dedicated, compassionate employees and some strong individual experiences of good care, juxtaposed against operational inconsistencies that materially affect safety and quality for other residents. The positive comments tend to emphasize interpersonal strengths (staff warmth, personalized attention, a sense of home), while the negatives tend to highlight systemic problems (staffing levels, medication errors, supervision and cleanliness). This split suggests variability in day-to-day execution — some shifts or units may perform well while others struggle.

If evaluating Paradise Care Cottage further, prospective residents or families should prioritize verifying the specific concerns raised here: ask about current staffing ratios and turnover, observe the facility at multiple times of day (including evenings and weekends), inquire about medication management protocols and incident history, inspect cleanliness in multiple apartments and common areas, and request clarification of administrative policies such as move-notice requirements and language/accessibility policies. Also request references from current families and, if possible, speak directly with a mix of residents and family members. These steps will help determine whether an individual’s experience is likely to match the positive reports or the more serious negative patterns observed in the reviews.

    About Paradise Care Cottage

Paradise Care Cottage has offered assisted living, independent living, dementia care, and memory care services in Port Saint Lucie, FL for 25 years before announcing the facility will close and become a drug rehabilitation center. The place is licensed as a senior care center and sits across from a boys & girls club and near a preschool, surrounded by family neighborhoods, and you'd see the building with resident parking, outdoor smoking areas, and a wheelchair-friendly design all around. They kept a nurse on call 24 hours a day, had staff awake at night, and security people stayed on-site all day and night, with door alarms, pull cords, and an emergency call system in every resident room for safety. The "Bahama" and "Caribbean" rooms came with private bathrooms, kitchenettes, basic furnishings, and cable TV, and some rooms you could customize or paint as you liked, with various options like studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, or semi-private setups, all with access to a screened porch, an in-house library, and living rooms with large TVs.

Residents could count on full help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, and moving around, even with walkers, wheelchairs, or needing a one-person lift, and there was special help for diabetes care, medication, and incontinence too. The staff kept up with all sorts of activities led by an activity director-both on-site and out in the community-and offered structured programs for social, physical, and mental engagement, including on-site religious services and off-site social outings. The meals came home-cooked, reviewed by a dietitian, three times daily, with snacks in the afternoon and evening and a family-style dining room where you could always request menu changes for special diets or taste preferences.

The facility accepted folks with mild dementia and psychiatric conditions and kept scheduled podiatry visits and access to hospice, respite, and transportation services for outings or rides to public transit. Payment was accepted through private pay, Social Security, veteran's benefits, and insurance, and the community allowed pets with approval. Staff managed medication and offered home care services for non-medical needs. There were outdoor areas to relax, an activity center, community-wide internet, and a barber and beauty shop on-site. Residents had to move within 45 days before the center stopped operating, and during this time, a peaceful protest happened out on the sidewalk at 5:00 p.m. as part of expressing community concerns about safety and support. The facility, while open, focused on providing straightforward, dependable care and a daily life that met the varied needs of seniors wanting some help but also wishing to keep their independence.
