    Beautiful grounds but inconsistent care

I love the grounds and amenities - immaculate, waterfront property with lovely gardens, lots of activities, a big dining hall and helpful extras (library, barbershop, rehab) and many staff who are warm, professional and attentive. I've seen excellent skilled care and prompt, compassionate responses, but I've also experienced or heard serious lapses: inconsistent food, small dorm-like rooms in places, frequent use of agency nurses, poor communication, understaffing and occasional neglect. Rooms and care quality seem to vary, so while the facility has top-notch features and many dedicated employees, management and staffing stability need improvement before I'd recommend it unreservedly.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment from the collected reviews is mixed but leans positive on physical environment, amenities, and individual caregiver quality while expressing consistent concern about management, staffing stability, and variability of services. Many reviewers praise the Masonic Home for being exceptionally clean, attractive, and well-maintained. The waterfront location on Coffee Pot Bayou and lush, manicured grounds are frequently cited as major strengths, as are pleasant common spaces (spacious lobbies, organized mailboxes) and a variety of on-site amenities including barbershop, library, exercise and activity rooms, ice cream shop and gift shop. Several reviews describe renovations and continuous improvement efforts to common areas and security upgrades, contributing to a perception of a secure and comfortable community that feels home-like for residents.

Care quality and staff performance appear prominently in the positive feedback. Multiple reviewers describe staff as caring, attentive, experienced, and responsive — with anecdotes about timely updates to families, daily visits from nurses to hospitalized relatives, compassionate end-of-life care, and staff with decades of service. Skilled nursing and rehabilitation services are noted, along with individualized care plans and a commitment to resident quality of life. Several reviews highlight robust programming — numerous social, recreational, and faith-based activities (bible study, church services, outings, exercise classes, arts/crafts, crosswords) — which contribute to residents’ engagement and satisfaction. The community’s Masonic and Eastern Star affiliation is a recurring positive, often tied to shared interests, on-site lodge access, and perceived value for members.

Dining and nutrition draw mixed reactions. Many reviews praise nutritious meal programs, dietary accommodations, professional chefs and an outstanding nutritional program; others report poor food quality and a lack of a dedicated chef, even describing meals as “awful” and inconsistent. This split suggests variability between dining experiences, perhaps by unit, shift, or period. Similarly, some reviewers emphasize prompt responsiveness and adequate staffing, while others report severe understaffing, long shift breaks, and a very high reliance on temporary/agency nurses (one review cites as much as 80% agency staffing). These contradictory impressions point to an inconsistent operational picture where quality can be excellent at times or in certain areas and problematic at others.

Management, communication, and staffing stability are the most frequently cited concerns. Multiple reviewers mention poor communication between nursing staff and families, an administrator perceived as not visible or engaged, and a need for leadership changes. High staff turnover and the use of temporary staff are associated with accounts of inadequate training, lower-quality care, and incidents such as falls — including reports of falls after residents had been designated fall-risk. There are also troubling anecdotes about staff behavior (outside smoking, long breaks, and in one case, staff expressing hostility toward certain groups). Several reviews recount specific lapses in care, such as residents being left unattended, missed pick-ups from doctor appointments, and family members having to bring food or intervene to secure care.

Room sizes and some physical plant issues are another area of divergence. Many reviewers report large, private, comfortable rooms and excellent value; others describe small, dorm-like rooms and older bathrooms. This variability suggests that different units or levels of care offer different accommodations. Regulatory issues are briefly mentioned in some summaries — reviewers reference government rating infringements — indicating that there may have been compliance or survey concerns at times, though specifics are not universally detailed.

In summary, Masonic Home presents a strong physical environment and many core strengths: very clean facilities, rich amenities, a broad and active program of social and rehabilitative activities, and many examples of compassionate, attentive staff and high-quality long-term care experiences. However, reviews consistently flag operational weaknesses that materially affect resident experience: inconsistent leadership and communication, staffing instability and high agency use, variability in dining and room quality, and occasional lapses in safety and care continuity. Prospective residents and families should weigh the facility’s attractive grounds, programs, and positive caregiver anecdotes against the recurrent concerns about staffing consistency and administrative responsiveness. For existing management, priorities that emerge from these reviews are stabilizing direct-care staffing (reducing agency reliance), improving transparency and communication with families, addressing any regulatory concerns, and ensuring consistent dining and room standards across all units.

    About Masonic Home

Masonic Home sits on over 18 acres of waterfront land just about two miles from downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, so you get peaceful views and all the conveniences of the city close by, and it's even right on the Pinellas County bike trail if anyone likes to get out for fresh air, and the elegant dining room has big glass walls so folks can see the water while they eat, and there's a walkway to a gazebo and fishing dock for those who enjoy the outdoors. The Grand Lodge of Florida owns and operates the community, sticking to Masonic traditions while welcoming everyone, meaning Masons and their families, their wives and widows, but also other members of the general community too. Masonic Home is a very large place, able to accommodate up to 187 residents and offering 102 beds, and the building itself is state-of-the-art, stretching out over 150,000 square feet with so many spaces including gracious lobbies, a beautiful waterfront dining room, a 5,000-volume library, rooms for billiards and cards, arts and crafts, shopping in a resident-run boutique, a chapel, a gift shop, kitchenettes, lounges, a waterside pavilion, and even a fishing pier.

Residents can pick from different living arrangements like studio, suite, semi-private, shared, and companion rooms, depending on their own needs or wishes, and people who value their independence but need a bit of help with daily activities can get personalized assistance through assisted living services. The nursing team has licensed professionals who provide 24/7 medical care and skilled nursing, focusing on helping people keep their strength and restore as much independence as possible. The community offers memory care, home care, assisted living, independent living, and skilled nursing, so people can get the right support as their needs change. The dining areas are a central part of life here, serving full breakfasts, lunches, and dinners with many options, including fresh fruits, vegetables, homemade soups and breads, and a wide choice of entrees and desserts, so residents can always find something they like.

People find plenty to do, with activities like choir practice, bingo, billiards, crafts, fishing, or card games, plus social events for holidays and special occasions, and there's a calendar of things to keep everyone engaged, including those in the nursing center. Residents can get their hair done at the beauty or barber shops, and the facility runs its own transportation with vans to take people for medical care, dental appointments, or even out to dinner theaters and local events. Community life here emphasizes relationships, respect, and understanding what matters to each person, all while keeping to a mission of high-quality care in a safe, comfortable environment that honors both tradition and personal choice. Masonic Home holds the fifth highest rating among local senior communities, averaging 8.3 out of 10, which shows people generally feel it's a good place to live with a focus on both safety and quality of life, and they even offer virtual tours so future residents and their families can look around before making a decision.
