    Caring staff but facility concerns

I moved my mom here after the new management took over (Jan 2023) and the staff genuinely cares - Meredith and others go the extra mile, placement was simple, the care has been amazing, the food is good, and the facility is kept very clean. That said, the building feels dated and dingy in places, rooms are small, activities are limited, and remodeling (new roof/painting) is still underway - my tour felt a bit ill-prepared and the office was hard to find. My biggest concerns were recurring cigarette/marijuana odors and employees smoking, and the elevator being out of order (memory care inaccessible at times), which raised safety/inspection worries - check those thoroughly. Overall I'd recommend for the caring staff and quality of care, but be careful to visit and confirm safety, accessibility, and whether the community is a fit for your loved one.

    Summary review

The review summaries for The Villages Senior Living present a mixed but coherent picture: several reviewers describe very positive personal experiences around care, staff responsiveness, cleanliness, and food, while others raise significant concerns about the facility condition, odors, operational reliability, and adequacy of programming. These contrasting impressions suggest there may have been a period of decline or uneven performance that some reviewers feel is being addressed under new management.

Care quality and staff: A number of reviewers singled out staff as a major strength — friendly, pleasant, and willing to go the extra mile. One person specifically named Meredith as kind and helpful and noted a smooth, simple placement process. Multiple reviewers said their loved ones are safe and cared for, with statements like “mom is safe” and “mom is loved.” Positive comments also described “amazing care” and staff that “genuinely cares about residents.” However, there are also reports of times when no staff were available and safety concerns were significant enough that reviewers invoked OSHA and Joint Commission issues. This creates a mixed view: when staff are present and engaged, care appears very good; when staffing or management lapses occur, experiences can be worrying.

Facilities and maintenance: The physical plant is another area of divergence. Some notes of improvement exist — remodeling is underway, and specific projects like a new roof and painting have been mentioned. Several reviewers reported the facility being very clean. Yet others describe a dingy, outdated, and uninviting atmosphere that is “not bright or cheery.” Operational problems were raised: an elevator out of order, a memory care unit that was inaccessible during visits, difficulty finding the office, and general signs of poor upkeep in places. Odor issues (cigarette and marijuana smell) and reports of employees smoking on-site were highlighted repeatedly and are a major negative theme because they affect resident comfort and safety.

Activities, community fit, and accommodations: Multiple reviewers characterized the community as small with limited activities, and several said it was “not the place mom would connect with.” These are important considerations for families seeking social engagement and programming for their loved ones. Rooms were described as small by some reviewers, which may matter for quality of life and for families comparing floor plans.

Management and trends: A clear pattern emerges around ownership and management changes. Some reviewers explicitly stated that new ownership and management (reported in January 2023) led to improvements, implying that many negative issues may have been from an earlier period. Remodeling and infrastructure projects are consistent with attempts at improvement. Nevertheless, other reviewers cautioned prospective families to “be careful when placing a loved one,” suggesting problems persisted or that improvements had not yet fully resolved historical issues.

Dining and cleanliness: Among the most consistently positive notes were comments on cleanliness and food offerings. When reviewers had good experiences, they often mentioned the facility being very clean and the food being a strong point, which supports the notion that operational standards can be high under attentive management.

Overall assessment and practical advice: The reviews suggest a split between positive personal-care experiences and serious concerns about facility condition, odors, and operational reliability. For prospective families, the pattern suggests: (1) verify recent changes and improvements since January 2023 and ask for documentation of repairs and remodel timelines; (2) do an on-site visit focused on smell, cleanliness, and whether maintenance issues (e.g., elevator, memory care access) are resolved; (3) ask about smoking policies and enforcement, staffing levels and schedules, and any regulatory or safety complaints and their resolutions; and (4) evaluate programming and room sizes to ensure a good social and physical fit for the resident. In short, The Villages Senior Living appears capable of providing strong, caring service in many cases, especially where staff are engaged and management is active, but families should confirm that the facility’s documented improvements have addressed the historically reported problems before placing a loved one.
