    Great staff, serious management problems

I loved the warm, attentive staff (Robyn stood out), the beautiful grounds, plentiful activities and generally good dining. The facility is well kept and the care team often went above and beyond. But management was weak - bullying, theft, mold and other complaints were often dismissed, activities cut back, and steep rent hikes felt unfair. Outstanding employees can't fully offset safety, responsiveness, and leadership issues, so I'm conflicted.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews of Aston Gardens at Tampa Bay are mixed but lean strongly positive about the staff, community feel, facilities and continuum of care, while showing recurring concerns around management responsiveness, safety/maintenance issues, and variable dining and value. The most consistent praise centers on the people who work there — multiple reviewers describe staff as warm, compassionate, attentive and willing to go above and beyond. Specific team members (for example, Robyn, Bradley and Dominique) are repeatedly called out by name for exemplary tours, move-in support and ongoing resident advocacy. Many reviewers emphasize feeling cared for like family, prompt maintenance responses for unit problems, and strong coordination of care including on-site nurses, house-call physicians, hospice support and therapy services.

Facilities and amenities: The campus is frequently described as beautiful, resort-like and meticulously maintained. Positive comments mention gorgeous landscaping, covered walkways, pool and hot tub, well-kept common spaces (ballroom-like clubhouses), and a variety of residential floor plans including spacious 1- and 2-bedroom apartments, villas and multi-bedroom options. Renovations, updated appliances and modern finishes are noted in many units; larger apartments are said to include washers, dryers and dishwashers while smaller units may lack those features. Residents appreciate safety features and a less institutional, more homelike environment.

Care quality and services: The community offers a broad continuum of services (independent living through memory care), on-site therapy (PT/OT), in-home care options, regular nursing coverage, and medical transportation. Reviewers generally praise the quality of care and the proactive approach to resident needs, noting thoughtful care coordination and attentive nursing teams. Several accounts highlight hospice support that exceeded expectations. Housekeeping, weekly cleaning and some automatic supply management are described as valuable inclusions.

Dining and activities: Food and dining receive mixed but often positive reviews. Many call the meals excellent and the chef outstanding, praising large portions and varied menus, while others criticize certain offerings, buffet/self-serve transitions, or kitchen staffing shortages. Two meals per day are commonly included, and some residents enjoy meals delivered to their doors. The activity program is widely regarded as robust, with a huge calendar that includes exercise classes (water aerobics, Tai Chi), piano and music, art, crafting, social clubs, outings and happy hours. Several reviewers lament reductions in programming tied to staff turnover or cite periods where activities were scaled back.

Management, safety and maintenance concerns: Despite frequent praise for frontline staff, a recurring theme is concern about management and corporate responsiveness. Multiple reviews report serious safety and health issues not adequately addressed: documented mold and water intrusion complaints (including alleged poor remediation and lack of mold testing or reports), thefts (including alleged thefts by staff or contractors), and at least one unauthorized entry/theft where residents felt unsupported. Several families felt that corporate or administration minimized problems or focused on rent revenue rather than remediation. There are also repeated complaints about resident-to-resident bullying and management failing to enforce conduct policies or revoking privileges inconsistently. While maintenance is praised in many cases for fixing things promptly, there are notable instances where remediation was insufficient (e.g., surface bleaching for mold instead of full remediation) and where grounds or some public spaces were reported as messy or scratched.

Pricing and perceived value: Cost is a frequent consideration. Many reviewers accept the price because of the high level of staff attention, amenities and continuum of care, describing the community as worth the expense or comparable to resort-level senior living. Others feel the monthly increases are steep (examples of 8–10% cited) and point out unexpected charges for certain menu items or services, leading them to question overall value. Some prospective residents found the pricing out of budget despite liking the facility and staff.

Campus layout and logistics: The multi-building design and spread-out campus are double-edged: some love the village-like, low-rise configuration and outdoor access, while others find the distance between buildings inconvenient—especially in bad weather—even with covered walkways and golf-cart transportation options. Renovation activity has created temporary disruptions for dining and programming in several reports.

Patterns and reliability of experience: There is a consistent pattern where frontline staff (caregivers, chefs, maintenance, activity directors) earn strong praise and create positive resident experiences, while higher-level management and corporate responses receive criticism when serious incidents occur. Many positive reviewers describe long, stable, happy stays and active social lives; conversely, the most serious negative reviews center on unresolved mold/health issues, theft, and perceived management inaction. Dining quality and activity levels can fluctuate with staff turnover and renovation timelines.

Final takeaways: Aston Gardens at Tampa Bay presents many strengths: a caring and often exceptional staff, attractive grounds, strong activity offerings, on-site medical and therapy services, and a wide spectrum of living options. These strengths make it a highly recommended choice for many independent and assisted living residents who prioritize community, care and amenities. However, prospective residents and families should thoroughly investigate recent maintenance records, ask for documentation on mold/water remediation and security policies, clarify billing practices and fee exceptions, and seek specifics about how the community enforces resident conduct and handles complaints. A careful tour, direct conversations with current residents about recent incidents, and written assurances on remediation and security steps will help balance the many positive aspects against the documented risks raised in several reviews.
