    Welcoming, active senior community recommended

I toured and now feel comfortable recommending this place - staff are consistently friendly and helpful, the community is clean, bright and well-kept, and the apartments are well-designed with lots of activities, a pleasant dining room and many amenities (theater, salon, gardens, shuttle/transport). Meals and programming are generally good and there are multiple care levels available so you can stay independent with support as needed. Be aware of extra charges, yearly rent increases and occasional maintenance/elevator hiccups; food and organization have room for improvement in some reviews. Overall I'm pleased - welcoming residents, attentive staff, and a social, safe environment that I'd recommend for active seniors.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews for Hammond Glen Retirement Community are predominantly positive about staff, community, amenities, and value, but there is clear variability in operational consistency and building limitations. The most consistent praise centers on the people — caring, familiar, and often proactive staff — and on the breadth of activities and on-site amenities that create an engaging, apartment-style senior living experience. Many reviewers call the staff the best thing about the place, describe a family-like atmosphere, and note long-term residents who are happy and socially active. At the same time, multiple reviewers report frustrating operational problems (elevator reliability, maintenance inconsistencies) and a handful of serious allegations that are outliers but must be considered.

Care quality and staff: Across reviews the staff and caregiving teams receive repeated commendations. Tour guides, concierge personnel, dining staff, and administration are frequently described as friendly, respectful, professional, and attentive. Several reviewers emphasize staff members who know residents by name and who make an effort to accommodate special needs during moves or daily life. There are numerous accounts of smooth transitions to higher levels of care when needed, compassionate handling of residents in decline, and supportive communication with families. However, there are also isolated but significant complaints about management communication and unprofessional behavior — including instances of slow or missing return calls and, in very rare cases, alleged misrepresentation of care needs or forced eviction. These latter claims are not the norm in the dataset but are serious and should be investigated by prospective residents and families.

Facilities and living units: Hammond Glen offers a range of renovated apartment styles (renovated 1BRs, California-style suites, penthouse units) and many reviewers praise the clean, bright, and tastefully furnished units they toured or moved into. The building is a nine-story high-rise constructed in the 1980s and undergoes ongoing remodeling; this is a pro for those wanting updated apartments and lots of amenities in a single building, and a con for those who prefer ground-level living or extensive outdoor grounds. Many residents enjoy views of trees, koi ponds, or the surrounding area, but there are repeated notes that outdoor walking areas and garden plots are limited and that there are no ground-level apartments — a deal-breaker for some. Elevator reliability is a recurring operational concern: reviewers reported frequent elevator outages or limited elevator numbers relative to building population, which affects convenience and perceived safety.

Dining and meals: Dining impressions are mixed and appear to vary by meal plan and by reviewer expectations. Several visitors and residents praise the food, variety, an on-site chef, and special dining events; features like a weekly produce truck and the option to meet the chef were positively noted. Conversely, other reviewers describe poor food quality (especially salty or artificial desserts) or the limitation of only one meal included in certain plans. Meal-plan flexibility is a positive (fixed-menu options, three-meal plans available at higher cost), but extra charges for additional meals and for utilities such as electricity, internet, and phone were cited frequently. Prospective residents should clarify what is included in their lease and how dining plans affect total cost.

Activities and community life: Activity programming is a strong point. Hammond Glen offers frequent and diverse options — from exercise classes, yoga, and seated fitness to games like bridge and mahjong, cultural events (e.g., Japanese blossom celebrations, Danish breakfasts), movies multiple times daily, live bands, performances, and resident-run initiatives. Reviewers consistently report robust calendars, welcoming social spaces (library, cafe, movie theater, ice cream parlor), and many opportunities to build friendships. The community feel and resident engagement are among the highest-rated aspects.

Management, operations, and costs: Opinions on management and operations are mixed. Many reviewers praise admissions, staff responsiveness, and helpfulness during moves; others report gaps in communication, slow maintenance response, and front-desk staffing inconsistencies. Financially, Hammond Glen is often described as affordable and a good value compared with alternatives, with some quoted price ranges around mid-$2,000s depending on plan. However, recurring complaints about annual rent increases (some say as high as 10% despite promises of lower pre-move quotes) and extra fees have caused concern. There are also operational warnings to prospective residents: ask about elevator redundancy, maintenance response times, the assisted-living waitlist, detailed meal inclusions, and the community’s rent increase policy.

Safety and serious concerns: While most reviewers feel safe due to secure access and 24/7 staffing, there are notable safety-related criticisms. A few reviewers reported delayed fall responses, fall-system failure, or ambulance calls; others raised concerns around staffing and front-desk coverage at specific times. Most safety issues appear anecdotal but are important for those with higher care needs. Additionally, isolated but very serious allegations (forced eviction, misrepresentation of care needs, and claims of hastened decline) were raised by some and should prompt careful follow-up by families considering this community.

Bottom line and guidance: Hammond Glen appears to be a strong option for active seniors who want an amenity-rich, affordable apartment-style community with a warm staff/resident culture and many organized activities. It particularly fits those who value social programming, on-site conveniences, and the ability to age in place with access to assisted living. Prospective residents should, however, verify operational details during a tour: inquire about elevator reliability and redundancy, maintenance response times, which utilities and meals are included in the monthly fee, rent increase policies, the waiting list for assisted living, front-desk staffing hours, and any recent renovation schedules or disruptive construction. Also ask for references from current residents and families, and probe the few serious complaints to understand whether they were isolated incidents or indicative of broader issues. With direct questions and a thorough tour/meeting with staff, many families will find Hammond Glen to be a welcoming and good-value choice; others with mobility restrictions, a need for ground-level outdoor access, or heightened concerns about short-term management practices should weigh those considerations carefully.

Residents can pick from spacious, freshly renovated 55+ apartments, with studio and one-bedroom options and month-to-month leases that start at $2,900, and while there aren't details about the inside of each apartment, everyone gets Wi-Fi, and there are plenty of common areas inside and outside with walking paths, a patio for gardening, and both quiet and social spots to get together with family or other residents.
