    Mostly positive, but some issues

I moved in recently and overall I'm pleased - the building is brand-new, clean, well-located with good-sized apartments, patios, salon, lots of activities, and mostly friendly staff; they accept VA/Medicaid and offer helpful programming and hot meals. There have been growing pains: management and some staff were unprofessional or unavailable at times (low staffing, turnover, privacy and medication concerns, missing laundry, occasional cleanliness/pest and maintenance issues). Management changes have improved care and communication, so despite the bumps I would recommend it if you can accept some short-term issues and the cost/waitlist.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans toward cautiously positive when current management and some strong staff members are in place. Many reviewers praise the physical plant: multiple accounts describe a clean, new, modern, even resort-like facility with large apartment layouts, patios, TV lounges on each floor, a beauty salon, and pleasant common areas. The location is frequently noted as convenient/downtown, and the community attracts strong interest (hard to get in, wait list). Several reviews specifically call out that the community accepts VA benefits and Medicaid and offers payment/financial assistance options, which broadens access for some families.

Care quality and staff behavior show a wide range of experiences. Numerous reviewers report friendly, helpful, and caring staff and say residents are well taken care of; several point to visible improvements after a management change and a new Executive Director, describing the place as "first-class" and recommending it. At the same time, there are repeated reports of inconsistent staffing levels, high turnover, and isolated instances of seriously unprofessional behavior (examples include a CNA sleeping on shift and named staff being disrespectful). Some reviewers reported low staffing on Sundays or other times, and others expressed confidence in staff despite earlier problems. There are also concerns about medication practices — one reviewer claimed over-medication and others mentioned that management changed how medication was distributed — which suggests families should confirm current medication policies and oversight.

Facilities and maintenance evoke both praise and criticism. Many residents compliment the newer construction, large rooms, and attractive atmosphere; others, however, report significant maintenance and cleanliness issues. Specific problems noted include air conditioning and plumbing failures, filthy external bathrooms, and an ongoing or intermittent pest problem (cockroaches). Public areas and some apartments were reported as not clean in multiple summaries. These mixed reports suggest that while the building is new and attractive in many respects, operational practices (housekeeping, pest control, maintenance response) have been inconsistent across time or units.

Dining, programming, and daily services are similarly mixed. Several reviews highlight strong programming and many activities, praising the variety of events, senior neighborhood programming, and special occasions (e.g., a 90th birthday celebration). The dining experience receives both positive and lukewarm comments: some reviewers praise hot meals and a chef who engages with residents, while at least one reviewer said there was "no meal service" and others called cafeteria food merely "OK." Laundry service is another repeated pain point — reports include laundry not being provided, missing clothing, and no soap in bathrooms — indicating unreliable ancillary services for some residents.

Safety, privacy, and emergency preparedness are recurring concerns. Multiple reviewers call out a lack of security measures (not gated, downtown traffic, general security concerns) and note privacy violations such as unannounced room entries. There are also alarming mentions of inadequate evacuation and fire safety planning and a past fire event (January 2017). Given these comments, safety protocols and emergency plans appear to be areas where families should get specific, up-to-date documentation and assurances from management.

Management and responsiveness show clear patterns of change over time. Several reviewers describe early "growth pains," poor management, or unresponsiveness, with follow-up comments that a new management team and Executive Director significantly improved care, communication, and the overall environment. Conversely, other reviewers still report negative interactions with staff or office personnel and describe managerial unavailability or nastiness. Financially, some residents felt rent or costs were high and observed that rent was unchanged despite operational changes; others were satisfied with payment options and assistance available. The variability suggests that experiences depend heavily on timing and which staff are on duty, and that the facility has been in transition.

In summary, Oasis at Scholars Landing offers many of the features families look for in a modern senior community — new, attractive facilities; sizeable apartments for many units; convenient location; on-site amenities; active programming; and staff members who are genuinely caring. However, these positives are tempered by recurring operational problems: staffing inconsistency and turnover, isolated but serious unprofessional behavior, maintenance and cleanliness lapses, pest incidents, unreliable laundry/service offerings, medication-management concerns, and safety/privacy issues. Reviews indicate improvement under new leadership in several areas, but also demonstrate that problems have been persistent for some residents. Prospective residents and families should balance the facility's physical advantages and programmatic strengths against these operational issues, and should ask pointed questions about current staffing levels, pest control, housekeeping standards, laundry policies, medication management, safety and evacuation plans, and which services are included in the rent before deciding.
