    Caring community, great memory care.

I placed a loved one here and overall I'm pleased: the brand-new, beautifully appointed community feels like home, the memory-care program and activities are outstanding, and most staff are genuinely kind, attentive and professional. Several caregivers stood out for compassionate, respectful care and clear communication, and the facility is convenient and well maintained in many areas. That said, dining quality, some housekeeping/grounds upkeep, and management/staff turnover have been inconsistent, so expect variability. On balance it's a caring, high-quality option for memory and assisted living, but keep an eye on dining and staffing stability.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Arbor Terrace Burnt Hickory are predominantly positive, with a large volume of comments praising the staff, cleanliness, and overall environment. Many reviewers describe the staff as compassionate, personable, and attentive — frequently naming individual employees (front desk, activities, nurses and aides) and crediting them with creating a warm, family-like atmosphere. The facility is repeatedly described as modern, well-appointed, and hotel-like, with bright apartments, large windows, high ceilings, and attractive common spaces. Memory-care services receive strong praise in many reviews, noting Teepa-trained staff, innovative dementia care approaches, and engaged programming tailored to residents with cognitive impairment.

Care quality and staff: A major theme is that staff dedication and relationships with residents are a core strength. Multiple reviews cite staff familiarity with residents’ needs, pets, and preferences; prompt updates to families; compassionate end-of-life support; and proactive, transparent communication from certain members of management and nursing leadership. On-site clinical supports (RN, on-site doctor, podiatrist) are valued by families and cited as contributing to safety. However, there are clear counterpoints: a subset of reviews report high staff turnover, variable clinical competence in memory care, and instances where family members felt the facility failed to act without family intervention after falls or dehydration. These more severe clinical criticisms are less common than the positive statements but are serious when they occur and represent an important pattern to investigate (examples include reports of inadequate empathy, repeated falls, and hospitalizations attributed to dehydration).

Dining and food service: Dining is one of the most mixed areas. Many reviewers praise the food — calling meals delicious, crediting the chef, and noting individualized servers and a pleasant dining atmosphere. Conversely, a sizable number of reviews complain of declining meal quality, salty food, inadequate portions, slow service, and occasional shortages (e.g., ice cream). Several reviewers indicate dining service appears understaffed at times. There are indications management has taken steps (new chef hired) to address complaints, but dining remains a divided topic across the review set.

Facilities, housekeeping and grounds: The facility’s physical environment receives consistent praise: clean, spotless rooms, thoughtful decor, and well-maintained common spaces. Weekly housekeeping is often described as thorough with extras and attention to detail. Still, some reviewers note inconsistencies: beds not being made daily, cushions and furniture not repositioned, stained carpets, and back patio/courtyard maintenance not performed to daily standards. These operational lapses appear intermittent rather than universal but are frequent enough to be a recurring concern.

Activities and social life: Activity programming is frequently highlighted as a strength. Reviews mention an extensive calendar, music and performance events, exercise classes, games, seasonal decorations, and opportunities for residents to socialize and sunbathe on the back deck. Most residents are described as happy and engaged. A minority of comments say some memory-care residents spend much of their time in their apartments and that activities in memory care can be limited (bingo, drawing, trivia), suggesting variability in engagement depending on unit and resident needs.

Management, responsiveness and safety: Several reviews specifically praise management for being supportive, proactive and communicative — noting named managers who provided excellent service. Yet there is a contrasting set of comments reporting management turnover, defensive responses to concerns, and ineffective follow-through from resident council meetings. COVID handling also draws mixed reviews: many appreciated the safety measures and lack of outbreaks, while some families reported frustrating delays in detection and communication. Combined, these comments point to strengths in leadership when particular individuals are present, but also a vulnerability to uneven performance during staff or managerial transitions.

Patterns and recommendations from the reviews: The strongest, most consistent positives are staff compassion, a warm and home-like atmosphere, clean and modern facilities, and an active community life with robust memory-care programming. The most frequent and actionable negatives are inconsistent dining quality/service, intermittent maintenance/housekeeping lapses, staff turnover or understaffing, and occasional reports of clinical shortcomings in memory care. The community is in high demand (long wait list), which speaks to its reputation but may complicate placement timing.

Bottom line: Arbor Terrace Burnt Hickory appears to be a well-regarded, attractive community with many repeat praises for caring staff, cleanliness, and a strong memory-care focus. Prospective residents and families should be encouraged by the positive patterns around personalized care and engagement, while also probing current staffing stability, specific dining practices and menus, housekeeping schedules, and protocols for clinical incidents (falls, dehydration, infection detection). Asking for recent menus, staff tenure data, examples of follow-up from resident council items, and how the community handled recent COVID or clinical incidents will help families verify that the aspects praised in many reviews are consistent and that the intermittent concerns have been addressed.
