    Caring staff, affordable dementia care

I placed my memaw here and, despite an older, dim and somewhat run-down building that could use renovations, the staff were exceptionally kind, attentive and communicative - they kept her room clean, redirected her frustrations, and gave our family real peace of mind. It's inexpensive and family-friendly with suitable dementia care, a fenced shady yard and gazebo, and good nursing/food cleanliness practices. Not fancy, but for the caring team and unbeatable value it was the right decision for us and worth the drive.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive about the quality of care and the staff, while expressing consistent concerns about the physical plant and amenities. Reviewers repeatedly praise the staff as kind, attentive, empathetic and communicative. Family members report that staff provide reassurance, redirect residents’ frustration effectively (noted specifically for dementia care), and keep families informed. Several reviews emphasize that staff create a supportive environment for both residents and their relatives, leading to feelings of trust and peace of mind. New ownership and management are called out positively in at least one review, reinforcing the impression that leadership and communication have been improving.

Care quality and day-to-day routines receive favorable remarks. Multiple reviewers describe nurses and food service staff as maintaining good cleanliness practices; specific anecdotes indicate rooms smelling fresh, residents appearing well-groomed, and some families being comfortable visiting for meals. There is clear evidence that the facility can be a good fit for long-term residents and for people with dementia, with one reviewer saying their relative lived there for years and seemed happy. The family-friendly visiting policy and the presence of an enclosed outdoor area with shade and a gazebo are also noted as meaningful pros for residents and visitors.

However, the physical facility is a repeated area of concern. Many reviews describe the building as older, dated, or gloomy, with dim lighting and areas that feel run-down or dusty. Some reviewers reported smells and an overall need for renovations or better upkeep. There are mixed impressions about the interior: while some reviewers say the inside is large and nicely laid out, others describe it as smelly and poorly maintained. The exterior and surrounding grounds are described as unremarkable or industrial in appearance, though the fenced outdoor area is a positive counterpoint. These contrasting reports suggest variability across different parts of the facility or changes over time (for example, construction or partial updates), so prospective families should plan a thorough, timed visit to assess spaces most relevant to their loved one.

Programming and activities are another consistent gap. Several reviewers explicitly mention a lack of activities, which could be a significant consideration for families seeking an active social calendar or robust engagement programs for residents. Coupled with the dated common areas, this suggests the social environment may be quieter or less activity-focused than in more modern or better-resourced facilities.

Value and accessibility are mixed but notable. Multiple reviewers call The Pines of Maysville a "hidden gem" because of its affordability — many point to unbeatable value and inexpensive pricing relative to similar care. That makes it attractive to families prioritizing cost and caring staff over upscale amenities. At the same time, some reviewers note practical drawbacks such as a long drive (about an hour each way for at least one family) and the absence of explicit cost information in the reviews, which means prospective residents should request current pricing and any ancillary fees directly from the facility.

In summary, reviews depict The Pines of Maysville as a facility with strong, compassionate caregiving and trustworthy staff that provides good day-to-day care—especially for dementia patients—at an affordable price. The major tradeoffs are an aging, inconsistently maintained physical plant, limited activities, and a less attractive exterior and surroundings. For families who value attentive staff, reliable communication, and lower cost, The Pines may be an excellent option; for those prioritizing modern facilities, abundant programming, or proximity, it may be worth visiting in person to verify whether the facility meets those expectations. Prospective families should tour multiple times (day/evening), ask for current activity schedules, inspect specific rooms and common areas, and obtain a clear, written cost breakdown before deciding.

    About The Pines of Maysville

The Pines of Maysville is a senior living community that supports up to 36 residents in a place designed for people who need help with memory concerns, like Alzheimer's disease or dementia, though you'll find assisted living and independent living options as well, and they'll tailor care plans to each person, tending to bathing, dressing, and help with getting around, with 24-hour staff who watch over everyone and make sure help's right there. You can choose furnished or unfurnished rooms, and there's a focus on making things comfortable and home-like, with updates and photos popping up regularly on Facebook so families can stay in touch with what's happening inside. Folks here stay active, with resident-run activities, scheduled daily programs, and community events filling up the days, plus there's a garden to walk, a library, walking paths, and plenty of spaces indoors to gather and chat, including a small library if you want a quiet spot. Memory Care gets special attention with the SHINE® Memory Care neighborhood, which is made to be secure and easy to get around, reducing confusion and keeping residents safe from wandering. Meals are cooked right there, with chef-prepared food and restaurant-style dining all day, and they take special diets into account-people seem to enjoy breakfast favorites like sour cream biscuits and warm fruit compote. You'll find a beauty salon and barber for personal grooming, cable TV and Wi-Fi in apartments, and folks can use the emergency alert system for extra security day or night. Activities often reflect what the residents want, showing that they really do listen to those living there, and professional staff help with medication and work to keep everyone as independent as possible. There are special programs and supervision for those with memory issues, services for folks who use wheelchairs, and a care plan-based approach means every resident gets support that fits their own needs. Respite stays let people come for a short visit if they only need help for a little while, and there are devotional services, too, if that's something you value. Martha and Jack, Mrs. Taylor, and the director of public relations, Ashley Young, are contacts there if you ever have questions. Remodeled spaces and ongoing improvements show they keep things up to date, and the staff focus on making life easier and more pleasant while helping people age in place if that's what they want. The Pines of Maysville offers a range of help, both big and small, in a setting that's made to feel calm, social, and safe for everyone living there.
