Kahala Nui sits on a six-and-a-half-acre garden campus near downtown Honolulu, so residents can enjoy peaceful, island-style living while still being close to stores, restaurants, and entertainment. This retirement community requires residents to be at least 62 years old and offers many levels of care, like independent living, assisted living, memory care for Alzheimer's and dementia, skilled nursing, and senior day care. The campus includes a fitness club, pool, jacuzzi, meditation garden, and well-kept outdoor and indoor spaces, along with garage entry and underground parking for easy access. Residents can pick from private suites, rooms with balconies, and semi-private units, all set up for comfort and privacy. There's a casual dining area where you'll find options like the Kahala Nui bento with miso salmon, chicken karaage, and teriyaki beef. There's also a "Sherbet" program for residents, though the details about it aren't clear, and opportunities for continued education and annual surveys to measure satisfaction. Kahala Nui values the individuality of each resident and works with both residents and their families to match care with each person's wishes and emotions. With 24/7 supervised care and support when needed and wellness programs to help people age in a healthy way, residents can focus on the things they enjoy and leave behind the chores and worries of owning a home. The facility is accredited by the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating, and Kahala Nui has a mission to provide quality care for seniors in a safe, welcoming place. While some services aren't specified and you might encounter an error if you try to access some information, Kahala Nui tries to offer peace of mind and a supportive environment for seniors wanting gracious island living as their needs change.
Elegant independent living, unacceptable care
I loved the independent-living side - elegant lobby, beautiful gardens and waterfall, spacious apartments, great food and genuinely caring staff. But when my family needed assisted living the care was unacceptable: poor nursing and supervision, aides skipping services or forcing personal aides, slow dining assistance, added laundry charges, weekly showers only, urine smells and terrible communication. With high upfront and monthly fees, I cannot recommend it for seniors who may need advanced care.
