    Relieved, excellent care, minor issues

I placed my mom here and I'm relieved - the staff are warm, professional and treat residents like family, the building is spotless and beautiful with spectacular views, and the rehab/medical care is excellent. Meals are varied and usually arrive hot, activities are plentiful, and communication gives me real peace of mind. We had a few minor hiccups (occasional meal/med mix-ups, delayed assistance, parking and a closed lanai), but staff were responsive and caring. Overall, I feel my loved one is in very good hands.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews of Maunalani Nursing & Rehab Center are overwhelmingly positive, with the majority of accounts highlighting compassionate, professional caregivers, strong therapy services, and an exceptionally well-maintained, hotel-like environment with spectacular views. Families and residents repeatedly praise individual staff members (CNAs, RNs, and therapists) by name and describe the staff as going above and beyond, fostering a warm, family-like atmosphere. The facility's admissions team, front-desk personnel, and dining staff are also frequently commended for helpfulness and friendliness, contributing to families' peace of mind.

Care quality and clinical services: Clinical care is a convergent strength in these reviews. Multiple reviewers report attentive nurses, coordinated communication with doctors, and proactive nursing interventions (including support during hallucinations and comfort at end of life). The therapy teams (physical, occupational, and speech) are highlighted as especially effective — many reviewers note clear progress in mobility, swallowing, and cognition, and they attribute rehabilitation gains to knowledgeable, hands-on therapists. Speech therapy, PT, and OT are described as engaging, thorough, and supportive, with staff guiding residents and families through recovery plans. At the same time, a minority of reviewers reported inconsistent rehab experiences — citing therapy cancellations, lack of follow-up home-training, or concerns that the facility in specific cases did not function as a full-service rehab center. These isolated reports suggest variability in therapy scheduling or expectations for some residents.

Staffing, communication, and family inclusion: One of the most consistent themes is staff compassion and personability. Reviewers note CNAs, nurses, and therapists who are patient, kind, and relational; several staff members (e.g., Ernest, Josie, Theresa, Rebecca, Susie, Lolita, and others) are singled out for exceptional attention. Families appreciated detailed updates, timely bulletins during the pandemic, and the facility’s efforts to include relatives (family meals in the Aloha Room, shared activities, and transition assistance). The facility’s cultural warmth and "ohana" spirit are repeatedly mentioned, and reviewers report feeling welcomed, respected, and reassured by staff interactions.

Facility, cleanliness, and amenities: Maunalani’s physical plant is a major positive driver of sentiment. Reviewers describe spotless rooms and hallways, spacious accommodations, scenic lanais, and a calming, hotel-like ambiance. The lack of the typical “nursing home smell” and the existence of multiple outdoor spaces and million-dollar views (Diamond Head, mountains, greenery) were repeatedly praised. Amenities such as a hair salon, live entertainment, cooking shows with samples, and many activities contribute to residents’ quality of life. A few isolated cleanliness/maintenance concerns were mentioned (spiders on ceilings, third-floor lanai temporarily closed for safety), indicating occasional operational or housekeeping issues but not a pervasive cleanliness problem.

Dining and activities: Dining receives largely positive feedback — many reviewers call the food delicious, diverse, and served hot, and they praise attentive dining-room crews and the kitchen team. Some reviewers, however, reported meal service issues (missing items, small water cups, or bland/unhealthy options) and concerns about residents losing weight. Activities programming is a clear strength: reviewers frequently mention varied, engaging activities including live musicians, dances, animals, games, karaoke, and opportunities for family involvement, all of which support social engagement and resident happiness.

Operational and management concerns: Several operational themes emerge as areas for improvement. A persistent complaint involves heavy documentation and charting requirements — reviewers described extensive PCC charting, long MDS/Section GG questionnaires, and repeated manager questions about ambulation/toileting that felt redundant and reduced direct care time. Medication management raised specific concerns: a few reviews mention medication substitutions without prior consent, a case of delayed or mismanaged medication leading to ER referral, and one report of medication billing at markedly higher rates than hospital charges. There are also scattered reports of administrative mix-ups (sign-in issues, missing clothing items, wrong prescriptions) and requests to streamline processes so staff can spend more time with residents. Fragrance-policy enforcement was initially inconsistent for some visitors but reportedly improved over time.

Safety, compliance, and pricing: Most reviewers felt safe with the facility’s COVID-19 protocols and overall infection control. A small number of comments raised potential regulatory or clinical concerns (worries about medication tracking, a comment about possible licensing concerns, and a misdiagnosis leading to ER care). Pricing and cost transparency were singled out by several family members as an issue — some considered charges high (including a reported example of medication billing being 3.5x hospital price) and wished for clearer consent processes for orders and billing.

Patterns and final assessment: In sum, Maunalani Nursing & Rehab Center receives strong, repeated commendations for its caregiving staff, therapy teams, cleanliness, amenities, and the overall resident experience enhanced by beautiful views and a robust activities program. The dominant impression is of a facility that treats residents with dignity, provides effective rehabilitation for many, and fosters family involvement. Notwithstanding these strengths, reviewers also reveal operational friction points: documentation burden, occasional inconsistencies in therapy follow-through and medication handling, some dining/service hiccups, and periodic housekeeping or maintenance items. These concerns appear intermittent rather than systemic but are important to address for consistency of care.

Recommendations based on reviews: Maintain and reinforce the strong clinical and hospitality culture that reviewers praise while focusing on operational improvements: streamline documentation to maximize hands-on care time, tighten medication consent and billing transparency, improve consistency in meal service and therapy scheduling/follow-up, and address any outstanding maintenance issues (e.g., closed lanais, housekeeping details). Overall, families and residents overwhelmingly recommend Maunalani for skilled nursing, compassionate care, and a high-quality residential environment, with the caveat to monitor and clarify some administrative and clinical processes during the stay.

About Maunalani Nursing & Rehab Center

Maunalani Nursing & Rehab Center sits up on Maunalani Circle in Honolulu and has cared for seniors and those needing recovery since 1950, starting out with just 42 beds in what was once the Castle family home, and now it's grown to a 100-bed, private, non-profit facility that's been shaped by many changes and renovations over the years. The center focuses on both skilled nursing and comprehensive rehabilitation, offering services like physical, occupational, and speech therapy, all with dedicated staff that includes licensed practical nurses, therapists, and people like Business Owner Keith Maile and Nurse Elma White, who've helped make the place known for being warm, friendly, and flexible when it comes to each resident's needs. Staff and residents alike know the feeling here is home-like, where there's a strong sense of community, and laughter and kindness are every bit as important as the physical care people receive. The care plans get tailored to the individual, and folks get support whether they're here long-term or for short-term rehab, and there's plenty of therapy equipment to help people find comfort and make gains in their recovery. The place operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tied to the Maunalani Foundation, and runs at cost, letting donations and trust funds help cover care that goes past basic room and board, always focusing on meeting the changing needs of the island's elders and those who can't be cared for at home anymore. Over its long history, from the days it was called Convalescent Nursing Home or Maunalani Hospital up to becoming Maunalani Nursing & Rehab Center in 1998, it's kept a focus on comfort, safety, and meaningful daily life, guided by the values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Elevate (CARE) and always trying to offer care that's both thorough and personal. The staff here, which numbers between 51 and 200, is known for their patience, playfulness, and genuine attention, helping residents feel secure, included, and dignified, and the facility tries to act as both a place to call home and a community where everyone can thrive together. The center aims to deliver a feeling of belonging, serenity, and choice, supporting people with both medical needs and emotional comfort, and it keeps adapting to what the local community needs, striving for excellence but never forgetting that kindness and respect matter most.
