Homestead at Morton Grove sits on Lincoln Avenue, and though it's part of a busy rental area with apartments and other options, it's set up for people age 62 and older who want a place that's easy to live in without much upkeep. The building opened in April 2012, and has 82 one- and two-bedroom apartments, with each one having its own washer and dryer, the heat and air are controlled by the resident, and every kitchen has full appliances, which is quite helpful. Most apartments have big closets, large windows, plenty of room to move around, and almost all have either a balcony, a patio, or a terrace where you can step out for some fresh air, and the finishes in the apartments look high-quality, with a decorator color palette and good soundproofing, so it's quieter than places most folks remember from years ago. They offer a few different apartment options, called The Avenues and the Affordable Series, with the latter being income-based and, as it stands now, fully leased with the waitlist closed for the time being, so that gives you a sense of demand. The community spaces include an atrium entry, sun room, wellness center with regular exercise classes, great room, party room, private dining room, a business center, library, and even a guest room you can use if family comes in from out of town, which seems convenient. There's a beauty and barber shop on site, scheduled transportation a couple times a week for shopping or to get to the nearby train or bus lines, and the staff is described as friendly and ready to help with what people need. They run all sorts of activities and social groups, which helps people get to know each other and keep busy, plus there's a wellness program to cover basic health and medication needs, as well as nutritious meals designed by chefs with a continental breakfast, and even a coffee machine for lattes, which is a nice little detail you wouldn't expect. The place offers independent living, assisted living, memory care, and home care options, but it's mainly designed for folks looking for easy living without the hassle of yard work or constant home repairs, and the environment leans toward those who value a social, cultural, and even spiritual sense of community, with scheduled events, plenty of gathering places, and a focus on letting residents enjoy their retirement in comfort and dignity, so while you won't find every detail spelled out about parking or every amenity that might exist in bigger places, Homestead at Morton Grove covers most of what matters for people wanting a secure, maintenance-free community.

Roomy cozy accessible independent living
I live in a roomy, cozy two-bedroom in a brand-new, clean, accessible building with wheelchair-friendly counters and underground parking (extra fee). The staff are cheerful, supportive and led by Valerie - she's a treasure - and residents are friendly; the complex feels safe and healthy with strong COVID precautions and vaccination efforts. Community spaces (used for morning coffee pre-COVID) and some activities like aerobics help prevent isolation, though Friday night meals can be inconsistent and the price is higher than I'd prefer. Overall, it's a well-run, comfortable place that lets me stay independent.
