    Accessible apartment, caring staff, secure

I live in a nice one-room apartment with a handicapped-accessible bathroom and a pleasant outdoor patio. The staff are gentle, caring and very helpful, the fenced memory-care unit gives me peace of mind, and the other residents are friendly - overall I'm pleased with the community and would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews portray a facility with clear strengths in its physical environment and many frontline caregivers but with several operational weaknesses that have affected resident experience. Positive features cited include private one-room apartments with accessible bathrooms, an outdoor patio, a secure fenced memory-care unit, and a generally supportive resident community. Direct-care staff are frequently described as gentle, loving, and helpful, and those interactions are a consistent reason families consider the location.

Care-quality observations are mixed. While direct caregivers are praised for compassion and attentiveness, reviewers describe recurring issues that suggest process-level failures: sanitation and incontinence-care concerns in parts of the memory-care area, delays in housekeeping and room-turnover, and inconsistent maintenance practices. Several comments indicate a perceived decline in general care and food quality over time. Reports that raise medication-safety questions — including concerns about staff credentials and supervision during medication administration — point to weaknesses in clinical-control systems that warrant verification during a visit or through documented policies.

Dining and activity programming show limitations. Families noted that residents sometimes require prompting to receive full meals and beverages, and some described a decline in food quality; this suggests the need to evaluate meal monitoring and dining-assistance practices. Activity offerings, particularly in memory care, have been restricted at times for infection-control reasons, which has reduced engagement opportunities for some residents. The secure memory-care unit is an asset for safety, but programming within that unit appears limited during certain periods.

Facilities and environment are generally seen as positives, with accessible bathrooms, private units, and outdoor space contributing to resident comfort. However, those advantages are offset by inconsistencies in housekeeping and room setup that can affect day-to-day living conditions.

Management and compliance are areas of notable concern. Review content raises questions about administrative professionalism, transparency, and complaint handling, including allegations of retaliatory behavior and mention of external regulatory review by state authorities. Privacy and HIPAA-related issues were also mentioned, indicating potential gaps in policies or practice. Together, these patterns suggest prospective residents and families should review recent inspection reports, ask for clarification on staff training and credentialing, inspect housekeeping and infection-control schedules, observe mealtime routines, and discuss the facility's complaint-resolution processes before making placement decisions.

    About Residential Living Center

Residential Living Center sits about 10.4 miles outside Mascoutah, Illinois, and stands as a medium-sized senior living facility with 48 beds, where seniors can choose from studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom apartments, most of them having full kitchens, wall-to-wall carpeting, walk-in closets, and their own heating and air systems, and you'll find large windows, lots of extra storage, furnished spaces, and places set up so residents can hang their own photos or decorations, and it's got safety features like sprinkler systems and smoke detectors in each unit, along with 24-hour security and emergency call buttons to keep everyone safe. King Management and sometimes Palladian Management runs things with a hands-on approach, and the place has had family-managed roots since 1992, so many staff stick around for years, and Sophia Rudd serves as the dedicated administrator. Folks living here will see staff ready to help with tasks like bathing, dressing, medication, incontinence, non-ambulatory needs, or diabetes care, and there's always staff on duty, so no one waits long during emergencies or routine check-ups, which staff do daily for vital signs, medication, and wellness.

This place offers both assisted living and memory care, so residents with Alzheimer's, dementia, or other memory needs get care in secure areas, with rooms designed for safety and comfort, regular supervision, structured therapy programs, and activities to keep their minds working, and each care plan fits the person, not the condition. Seniors who still want to live on their own can take part in independent living, where there's no need to worry about maintenance or household chores, but if help's needed, staff steps in, while those in memory care enjoy extra security, specialized therapy, and personalized attention through dementia waiver and supportive programming. For those who need rehabilitation or physical therapy, those services are arranged, and residents can get help getting to scheduled or emergency hospital visits because transportation vans run regularly, and if additional services come up, such as guest meals or salon trips, residents can pay a bit extra as needed.

When it comes to daily life, Residential Living Center feels much like a small town spot, with lounges, a library, a card room, a garden courtyard, walking paths, a barbershop and beauty salon, and a community center where you might find residents reading, playing cards, or walking in the garden, and there's free Wi-Fi and cable. Food comes three times a day in an elegant dining room-nutritious meals, made with health in mind, with special diets for those who need diabetes or allergy-sensitive options, and guests can join meals. There's also housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance in the rent, with all utilities, cable TV, and Wi-Fi paid for.

Programs promote fun, learning, and friendship, with a packed calendar: movie nights, outings, devotional activities, educational events, games, and even resident-led clubs, so even those in memory care get involved as much as possible, all aimed at keeping minds, bodies, and spirits active. Activity staff organize both on- and off-site events, therapy sessions, and wellness checks, and folks are encouraged to join in, but no one is made to. The setting is quiet-a country spot surrounded by manicured lawns and winding paths, so there's peace and privacy, yet opportunities to make new friends inside or out in the garden. Additional services for an extra fee-like guest stays or special transportation-are available if family or friends come for a visit or if someone just wants a little more help.

The community says its staff are kind, helpful, and welcoming, and the place is recognized as a member of the Illinois Pioneer Coalition for Culture Change and the Illinois Healthcare Association, showing a history of trying to improve care and keep things home-like while letting residents keep as much independence as possible. However, it's important to note that the average online rating sits at 1 out of 10, so anyone thinking of moving here may want to visit in person, ask questions, and talk to other residents about their experience before making a choice.
